“Prepositions”

• Prepositions are a grammatically distinct class of words

whose most central members characteristically express

spatial or temporal relations (such as the English words in,

under, toward, before) or serve to mark various syntactic

functions and semantic roles (such as the English words of,

for). In that the primary function is relational, a preposition

typically combines with another constituent (called its

complement) to form a prepositional phrase, relating the

complement to the context in which the phrase occurs.

• The word preposition comes from Latin, a language in which

such a word is usually placed before its complement. (This it

is pre-positioned.) English is another such language. In many

languages (e.g. Urdu, Turkish, Hindi, Korean and Japanese),

the words with this grammatical function come after, not

before, the complement. Such words are then commonly

called postpositions. Similarly, circumpositions consist of two

parts that appear on both sides of the complement. The

technical term used to refer collectively to prepositions,

postpositions, and circumpositions is adposition. Some

linguists use the word "preposition" instead of "adposition"

for all three case

What is Preposition ?

Prepositions are of five different kinds: 1. Simple prepositions 2. Compound prepositions 3. Double prepositions 4. Participle prepositions 5. Phrase prepositions

Simple PrepositionsSimple prepositions are words like in, on, at, about, over, under, off, of, for, to etc.

Compound prepositionsCompound prepositions are words like without, within, inside, outside, into, beneath, below, behind, between etc.

Double prepositionsDouble prepositions are words like outside of, out of, from behind, from beneath etc.

Participle prepositions Participle prepositions are words like concerning, notwithstanding, pending, considering etc.

Phrase prepositions Phrase prepositions are phrases like because of, by means of, with regard to, on behalf of, instead of, on account of, in opposition to, for the sake of etc.

Kinds of Prepositions

Preposition is a word that is used to place before noun or pronoun to show the relationship between them.

There are many prepositions in English. They are:In, Into, Out of, On, Onto, Onto of, At, Off, Inside, Outside, Above, Below, Over, Under, Underneath, In front of, Behind, Opposite, Between, Near, Next to, Beside, By, Along, Across, Through, Up, Down, Past, Around...

We divide prepositions into three important kinds.1) Preposition of PlaceExample : I am in Paris

2) Preposition of MovementExample : He get out of the car

3) Preposition of TimeExample : I fly to the USA on Saturday

Type of Prepositions

Prepositions of Place: at, on, and in

We use at for specific addresses.Grammar English lives at 55 Boretz Road in Durham.

We use on to designate names of streets, avenues, etc.Her house is on Boretz Road.

And we use in for the names of land-areas (towns, counties, states, countries, and continents).She lives in Durham.Durham is in Windham County.Windham County is in Connecticut

Prepositions of Time: at, on, and in

We use at to designate specific times.The train is due at 12:15 p.m.

We use on to designate days and dates.My brother is coming on Monday.We're having a party on the Fourth of July.

We use in for nonspecific times during a day, a month, a season, or a year.She likes to jog in the morning.It's too cold in winter to run outside.He started the job in 1971.He's going to quit in August.
