Prologue
The following is a manual for giving a job preparedness course as a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador. It should be noted that it is only a basic guide which can and should be added on to. Classes covering such life skills as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, for example, are not covered in this manual but would be appropriate topics to explore in preparing people for the world of work.
Before starting the course, it is important for the volunteer to begin investigating the reality of the job market in his or her area as well as in the entire country. Always have a recent classified section of the newspaper available to the students during classes and meet individually with each student on a regular basis to assess and address their needs. It is probable that you will encounter several challenges in helping people secure employment in El Salvador because of the general lack of opportunities throughout the country. And helping students to start thinking about their future and to actively and aggressively pursue employment can be difficult. Nonetheless, this course can be an extremely fulfilling experience for both you and your students. As the facilitator, you will be giving people skills that will enable them to improve the quality of their lives for the rest of their lives.

Class 1- Construction of “Historial Personal” Introduction: Teacher introduces self and objective of course to students.
Course objective: Prepare students for lifelong success in the search for and maintenance of employment.
Ice-Breaker: “Hot Potato.” The person with the ball/balloon/etc. must state their name
and their dream job. Jobs may NOT be repeated. Notes: While we have all probably thought about our dream job (travel writer, professional basketball player, or rock star) there is a good chance that your students have not. This activity therefore could be surprisingly difficult for them and may require you to offer some examples prior to the ice-breaker (professional soccer player, soap opera actress, CEO of Banco Cuscatlan). The stipulation that a job is not to be repeated is intended as encouragement for the students to really think about where they would like to be in the future, not just copy other responses.
Discussion: What kinds of jobs are available in and around your community?
Throughout the country? What qualifications are necessary for those jobs? Activity: Students fill out “Historial Personal (Appendix A).”
Notes: The purpose of this activity is to gather the information necessary to create a CV (curriculum vitae). Many of the students may not have any structured work experience but they have all worked and you will have to be creative in drawing that information out of them. For example, many may have worked in their aunt’s corner store or farming their cousin’s field. Even if they did not get paid, it is important to include this experience in the historial personal and CV. Give a name to the store even if it doesn’t have one. Use professional sounding job titles such as despachadora de comestibles or agricultor. And collect the finished products so that there is no chance of them being lost when it is time to refer to them during the elaboration of their CVs.

![Page 5: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Class 2 (if possible)- Creating an E-mail Account Activity: If you and your students have access to a computer center with an internet
connection (a CRA, for example, would be ideal), guide them through the steps in creating an email account. An email address is useful to have on a CV and will be necessary when searching for employment online.
Note: A good guide to follow in helping students create their own email account is part VII, activity 5 on page 113 of the Peace Corps Youth IT Manual. It would be a good idea to periodically send emails to your students in order to give them practice managing their accounts.
Class 3- Introduction to the Curriculm Vitae Introduction: Elicit ideas from students regarding what kind of information is found on a
CV and what a CV is used for. Activity: Pass out handout (Appendix B) regarding the “golden rules” of creating a
good CV. Break the class up into six groups, to each of which you assign one of the rules. Each group must review the rule assigned to them and present the information to the rest of the class.
Activity: After the presentations, pass an example CV (Appendices C-H) to each
group and ask them to identify any examples of the golden rules present or not present in the CV. Students then pass around all of the example CVs so that everybody has a chance to see them all.
Note: It is important to let the students know that because everybody has different work and academic experience, every CV will be unique. This is clearly evidenced by the six example CVs. And while there are some basic rules that every CV should follow, there is plenty of room for creativity regarding style and structure.
Class 4- Creating a Curriculum Vitae Discussion: Review the “golden rules” of CVs from the last class. Activity: Students begin to elaborate their CVs. They will need their historiales
personales and the example CVs from the previous class for referring to.
5
![Page 6: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Note: This class may take several sessions and will require constant one-on-one assistance. If the students are elaborating their CVs on a computer, it would be useful to save them on a memory stick or CD so that you can continually revise them.
Class 5- Creating a Cover Letter (carta de presentación) Before Class: Go through the classified section of a newspaper and cut out one job
advertisement for each student. Ideally, they would be jobs that the students could actually obtain- not an English teaching job for a student that doesn’t speak English.
Introduction: Explain what a cover letter is and review its structure (Appendix I). Activity: Hand out the job advertisements to each student and tell them that they are
to write a cover letter for the job advertisement that was given to them. Class 6- Interviewing Introduction: Ask if anyone has ever had an interview and to share their experiences. If
not, share your own experiences and discuss a particularly bad or particularly good interview.
Discussion: What are some common interview mistakes? What is the appropriate way
to dress? What kinds of questions should you ask at the interview? Activity: Review “Errores Comunes de Entrevistas (Appendix J).” Go around and
demonstrate the proper handshake with all of the students correcting them when necessary. Then have students practice handshakes with each other for a couple of minutes.
Note: This activity can be a lot of fun for the students.
Role play: Have a student interview you in front of the class using the example
questions (Appendix K). Your role is to be a terrible interviewee- chew gum, slouch, respond poorly to questions, etc.
Discussion: After the role play have the students discuss what you did wrong and elicit
some possible answers to the questions that were asked. Role play: Have another student interview you with the same questions but this time
your role is to be a good interviewee.
6
![Page 7: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Discussion: Discuss what you did well with the class. Role play: Now have the students practice with each other in pairs while you go
around monitoring and giving feedback. If they want to role play in front of the class afterward, choose groups to role play in front of the class.
Note: Aside from students being shy, one of the most difficult things for the students is to come up with questions for the interviewer. It might be useful to brainstorm some potential questions before the role play.
Class 7- What to Do and Where to Work Before Class: Put four signs in four different areas of the room. Each sign should have
one of four jobs on it (janitor, waiter/waitress, bank teller, and professor). Introduction Activity: Ask the students to form groups around the sign that has their preferred job on it. Now ask the students to form groups around the jobs that they think they could actually obtain given their present level of experience and education. There should be a notable difference.
Note: The purpose of this activity is not to unmotivate the students but to get them to form realistic expectations regarding their job options. It is important to remind the students that while it may not be possible for them to obtain employment as a bank teller today, it doesn’t mean it is impossible for the future.
Activity: Students complete handout (Appendix L). Individual Discussions: Now is a good time to start meeting individually with your students to review their goals and expectations. Go over their handouts with them. Class 8- Where to Look for Jobs Discussion: Where can we look to find job opportunities? (classified section of newspapers, internet, ministerio de trabajo, knocking on doors) Activity: Walk the students through the steps to create accounts and conduct a job search on one of the job bank websites in Appendix M (www.tecoloco.com is probably the best place to start). Have them send their curriculum with a cover letter to any jobs that may interest them.
Note: This activity may take several sessions depending on the students’ ability to navigate the internet. Most of the job openings listed on these sites are for university graduates or mid-career
7
![Page 8: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
professionals and even if they are not appropriate it is good practice for learning how to conduct a job search online.
Discussion: Explain to the students that there are also ways to create job opportunities for themselves. If they have a particular skill (such as carpentry, sewing, cutting hair, etc.), they can offer it in their community or elsewhere. Activity: Have students create a flyer promoting a service that they can provide. Discussion: Many small local businesses will be willing to give someone the opportunity to work even if they are not currently hiring. While the salary might be low as a result, it is nonetheless a good way to get work experience. Role Play: Students practice showing up at a business and asking for the opportunity to work (store, auto body, restaurant). ************************************************************************ Ideas for Other Activities During Course (see appendix P for contact information)
• Organize a job fair using the nearest Ministerio de Trabajo (MINTRAB) or on your own by inviting businesses, shop owners, etc. to your community (see appendices N and O for promotion ideas).
• See what else the nearest MINTRAB can do for you and your community (see appendix P for contact information).
• Have panel of successful Salvadorans speak with your students about their experiences in the world of work. The Peace Corps office is full of successful Salvadorans!
• Contact the writers of the Bolsa de Trabajo section of La Prensa Gráfica and ask them to come out to your site and give a charla (see appendix P for contact information).
• Get a representative from CARECEN to come out and give a charla about immigrating to and working in the U.S. (see appendix P for contact information).
Additional Resources
• Bolsa de Trabajo (every Monday in the Prensa Gráfica): Good articles related to the world of work and job announcements.

APPENDIX B
* No escribas frases inútiles que no aportan nada. Por ejemplo: NO escribas: "Cuando llegué no había un plan de mantenimiento preventivo y debí ocuparme de su desarrollo e implantación". ESCRIBE: "Desarrollo e implantación del plan de mantenimiento preventivo". 17 palabras frente a 8 para expresar lo mismo.
* Evita "frases hechas" y redundantes. "Quiero poner en su conocimiento que...",
* Expresa una idea en cada frase.
* Utiliza:
10
![Page 11: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
PUBLICACIONES Y OTRAS ACTIVIDADES PROFESIONALES.
11
![Page 12: Preparing People for the World of Work](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012920/61c8bb3a26b8a332c82d2376/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
6ª.- DESTACA TUS CUALIDADES, PERO NUNCA MIENTAS
