• Merit awards and career advancement are earned, not given. They are based on academic achievements.

• Academic advancement should evolve naturally, but it requires conscientious effort. Let your productivity speak for itself.

• Begin working toward advancement as soon as you join the faculty. Set a timetable and review at regular intervals. Discuss with your Chair/Division Chief.

• Keep on the lookout for beneficial opportunities.

Page 44: Preparing for Your Annual Merit Review (AAUP/AFT Selective …€¦ · 2006 - Faculty mentor, Fellows’ Journal Club (1 hr/wk 52 wk/yr) Residency Program 2006 - 2008 Humor and the

Your Academic Career

• Set your goals – Long- and short-term

• Obtain necessary tools/develop yourself

• Read and understand the P&T guidelines for your rank and track; current tracks and guidelines are at: http://facaffairs.med.wayne.edu/ (under P&T)

• Find appropriate mentor(s) - multiple mentors can be helpful

• Obtain knowledge/intellectual skills to accomplish your goals

• Document your teaching and productivity

• Tell people your plans and explain your thinking

Where Am I?

• What are your strengths and weaknesses?

• How will you improve your weaknesses? (gaps in knowledge /activities)

• How will you accentuate your strengths?

• Develop a TIME LINE!

– Tell others (Division head, chair, mentor) and stick to it!!!

Page 46: Preparing for Your Annual Merit Review (AAUP/AFT Selective …€¦ · 2006 - Faculty mentor, Fellows’ Journal Club (1 hr/wk 52 wk/yr) Residency Program 2006 - 2008 Humor and the

•For Clinician-Educators, scholarship is required, but it includes more than just research (original work), such as review articles, case reports, and book chapters

•PUBLISH, PUBLISH, PUBLISH: Papers are your scholarly currency to advancement!

•Submit abstracts and present at conferences •This helps to facilitate interactions and development of collaborations

•However, presenting many abstracts that are then not converted to publications is perceived negatively

•Research funding support •Although national peer-reviewed funding is well appreciated, other sources are also positive, including regional and local grants, and industry contracts, especially if investigator-initiated

Develop collaborations - but be focused!
