Preparing for the future in a Catholic environment Hei whakatakatū mo te wā ka heke mai nei I roto I tea o Katorika August 2 nd , 2016 Term 3, Week 2 Kia ora Whanau ma, Last week we welcomed Ezra from the Wellington based company ‘Dances for Schools’ to St.Patrick’s. Ezra spent half an hour with each syndicate teaching them a short dance which they were then able to perform. The children had a great time and enjoyed being taught by an expert. We are currently looking into ways to possibly use Ezra and his team of other tutors next year in preparation for our Cultural Concert. To watch a short video of the Kildare syndicate follow this link. Tomorrow after school, the teaching staff are taking part in professional development focusing on how we can implement STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) in our term 3 teaching units. The idea is that we try to teach these areas not as separate subjects but in a way which links them all together. We certainly recognise that we do not give some of these areas as much coverage as some other areas so this is a great opportunity for us. To learn more about STEM you can follow this link and watch a short video which explains more about the concept. Continuing with the Science theme, attached is an article that I recently came across entitled ‘How to raise brilliant children according to Science’. It is an article that I found interesting and I hope you will as well. Below is a quote from the article that certainly made me stop and think. “Why are traffic lights red, yellow and green?” When a child asks you a question like this, you have a few options. You can shut her down with a “Just because.” You can explain: “Red is for stop and green is for go.” Or, you can turn the question back to her and help her figure out the answer with plenty of encouragement. No parent, teacher or caregiver has the time or patience to respond perfectly to all of the many, many, many opportunities like these that come along. But a new book, Becoming Brilliant: What Science Tells Us About Raising Successful Children, is designed to get us thinking about the magnitude of these moments. Follow this link to read the full article. Next week, week 3, is New Zealand Maths week but for a variety of reasons we will be celebrating this the following week, in week 4 of the term. More details about activities to help celebrate maths and the important part it plays in our daily lives will be shared soon. A reminder that if you are planning to enrol your child at St. Patrick’s we ask that you do this as soon as possible. This is especially important for children who may still be turning five later this year, as well as next year in 2017. It helps us greatly to be informed as early as possible of enrolments. Enrolment packs can be collected from the school office. Ngā mihi o Te Atua Steve Wheeler, Principal

Kia ora Whanau ma,

Last week we welcomed Ezra from the Wellington based company ‘Dances for Schools’ to St.Patrick’s. Walking Bus: Chanel College in Herbert Street If we are going to get cold and wet we won’t walk.

From 8.20am on there is supervision and at 8.30am sharp we walk. Let your child walk to school with us. Supervised

by a teacher and for many children the only opportunity to

walk to school.

Environews: Week 2 of our Green-Gold term! This week we celebrate our native

bush area. When you look down to the

back of the field now its quite incredible the growth since it was first planted in

2009 and then each year after trees continued to be added by the oldest and

the youngest children at the school.
