PREPARING FOR A RETURN TO CAMPUS
THE UNIVERSITY IS CHANGINGThis document is to give details of specific types of controls which can then be considered and sourced by Procurement. Multiple suppliers may exist for each product. It may be possible for some products to be produced in-house and some may require skilled installation.
The document has been split into outdoor and indoor items. Items are rated as 1, 2 or 3.
Effective and essential
To be used when something more effective cannot be implemented
Not recommended in most cases but can be considered in the absence of any other option
From the car park to the entrance.
Keeping everyone safe whilst they work.

OUTDOOR CONTROLS
Barriers When putting new furniture into a space, the designated escape routes must not be obstructed, so far as reasonably practicable particularly if long queuing systems are implemented. If escape routes are partially obstructed the barriers must be easily moveable to re-instate a clear walkway to a final exit route.
Outdoor Signage Can be useful for spreading fundamental messages and providing reassurance. See appendix for required signage.

INDOOR CONTROLS
Cough BarriersTemporary Walls
Desktop barriers These should be sufficiently high to block line of sight between people. They do not always need to be transparent. They should be secure and stable.
NB: Screen sizes must be a minimum width of no less than 1m across per user sitting behind the screen, and the top of the screen must be no less than 2m from the ground
Helpdesk/Point of sale screens Should be placed between staff and the public where interaction is required. They should be stable and not easy to circumvent.
Temporary walls These can be used to further segregate areas but must not compromise fire escape routes.
Cough barriers Used to separate people standing near each other who cannot be distanced by 2m
They should be free standing and stable.

INDOOR CONTROLS
Hand wash stations can be placed at building entrances and at key locations where the touching of communal equipment will be necessary. Soap and water remain the most effective way to clean your hands however where running water is not available sanitiser can be used. Ideally in something which can be fixed down and requires as little physical contact as possible i.e. automatic dispensing.
NB: if there is short supply of secure wall mounted units so a temporary compromise to more portable units may be required.
Moisturising stations can also be used for high hand wash areas such as kitchens, workshops and labs.
Taped off areas can be done quickly and cheaply to mark where people should not use areas to aide social distancing.

AREA SPECIFIC CONTROLS
Face CoveringsFace coverings are available to all staff and students. For some tasks, managers may deem a face covering a requirement if other controls cannot be implemented effectively.
In line with government advice face coverings are not required for those coming on to campus. People can wear them on public transport if it makes them feel more comfortable or if the transport operator requires it. Gold to decide if face coverings will be made freely available or to certain groups.
Floor markings and tape From a fire safety perspective floor markings are preferable to physical barriers as they are less likely to obstruct escape routes.
One-way systems and floor markings Where possible buildings will use one-way systems in corridors and stairwells to minimise the chance of people coming into contact face to face. Other buildings will use markings or signage to indicate where people should walk or wait in a more detailed way than tape alone.

INDOOR CONTROLS
Basic posters and stands Can be used inside or outside to show key messages in addition to those placed on walls and poster boards. A full list of availble poster is available online .
Cheap and effective can be used to mark one-way systems and social distancing measures.
Entrance Signage Ideally on an A frame or similar so it can be moved and also placed in a prominent location the rules of the building and how the building is layed out. It also needs to have a space to enable the fire aider or fire marshall to identify themselves on a daily basis along with their contact details
Door openers The preferred system is installation of maglocks (preferred option) which are hard wired into the fire alarm system. This is significantly more expensive but requires less maintenance and is less likely to fail over time and it is therefore a good investment in the long term.
A second option would be dorgard, a third option stepnull (in terms of safety and effectiveness).
