Let them know that they will hear more about Gloria’s trip to Japan during Story Time today, and that during her trip she sees a Giant Panda. Then share some of these fun facts about the Giant Panda: Giant Pandas are known and loved all around the world, but pandas are very rare. There are only about 1,000 of them still living in the wild. They are an “endangered species.” That means if special care isn’t taken, they might disappear altogether. Giant Pandas aren’t giant when they are born. Newborn pandas are about the size of a stick of butter. But they grow to be about 5 or 6 feet tall and weigh about 275 pounds. Giant Pandas eat bamboo. They eat about 80 pounds of it every day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating! That’s more than half a day! Invite girls to say a word or phrase to describe the panda (cute, cuddly, big, eats a lot, etc.) and add it to their Team Animal Mural on their own or with your help. They can also say a word or phrase about how they feel when they think about the panda, and add that, too.

PREPARE AHEADSet up the blind taste test of the yogurt. Pour the yogurt from the three

containers into three bowls without any girls watching. (Be sure you know

which bowls hold which brands.) Display the three containers (but not in front

of the bowl they represent). Conceal the empty containers in some way, such

as putting a box over them or covering the labels with dark paper. Place each

concealed container next to the bowl that contains that yogurt. Have a second

set of the same containers out in the open for the girls to see which products

they will taste.

Prepare and set out the snack if you are serving something other than

the yogurt.

Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Panda: Japan/China)

Gather the girls in a Daisy Circle and ask them to take turns sharing one thing

about animals and animal care that they’ve learned along this journey. Let them

know that they will hear more about Gloria’s trip to Japan during Story Time

today, and that during her trip she sees a Giant Panda.

Then share some of these fun facts about the Giant Panda:

• Giant Pandas are known and loved all around the world, but pandas are very rare. There are only about 1,000 of them still living in the wild. They are an “endangered species.” That means if special care isn’t taken, they might disappear altogether.

• Giant Pandas aren’t giant when they are born. Newborn pandas are about the size of a stick of butter. But they grow to be about 5 or 6 feet tall and weigh about 275 pounds.

• Giant Pandas eat bamboo. They eat about 80 pounds of it every day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating! That’s more than half a day!

Invite girls to say a word or phrase to describe the panda (cute, cuddly,

big, eats a lot, etc.) and add it to their Team Animal Mural on their own

or with your help. They can also say a word or phrase about how they

feel when they think about the panda, and add that, too.
