Calibre 101 80 years of inspiration

While the history of Fine Watchmaking is studded with

inventions and technical accomplishments, one of them in particular opened up whole new vistas for the entire field: Calibre 101.

Created in 1929 in the workshops of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre, this prodigious feat of micromechanical engineering has been a watchmaking icon for 80 years.

80 years of uninterrupted history, of consistent advancement and creativity. This year, Jaeger-LeCoultre has chosen the Venice Film Festival as the venue in which to celebrate the world’s smallest movement.

Six very different and equally stunning watches commemorate this anniversary with a blend of grace and inspiration, treating the infinitely small to an infinitely broad variety of expressive variations.

Whether contemporary or classic, the Haute Joaillerie 2009 models, which include a masculine interpretation, vie with each other in providing a stylish frame for Calibre 101.

A slender profile outlined against a Reverso case; a round, rectangular or square dial revealing or concealing the mechanism; a range of noble and precious materials: each watch issued in limited

Joaillerie 101 1938 Embarking admirers a journey through time to the artistic wealth of the 1930s, this re-edition of a 1938 model features a streamlined case adorned with two rows of baguette-cut diamonds. The bracelet naturally extends the dial, while a geometrical frieze pattern meticulously engraved on the sides highlights its Art Deco profile. The hour and minute hands glide gracefully over a dial the exact size of the 101 movement, leaving in their wake a distinct sense that time has stood still to contemplate the graceful beauty of this horological work of art.

The gems arranged in graded shades of colour express delicate artistry calling for a broad range of precious stones required to create such a flowing merge of hues, an effect further accentuated by the extreme suppleness of the watch gently embracing the wrist. Symbolising a blend of rigorous technical expertise and sensual aesthetics, it vividly embodies the patience and talent of craftsmen at the peak of their art.

Grande Reverso 101 Art Déco, ladie’s model In the feminine interpretation, this fascinating stage-setting succumbs to the mysterious charm of a shimmering landscape composed of mother-of-pearl and diamonds. While rows of baguette-cut diamonds accentuate the Art Deco style of the model, the cradle is clothed in a dazzling fairytale radiance: nestling against each other according to the snow-setting technique, the stones completely conceal the underlying metal and form sparkling rays of frost between the swathes of mother-of-pearl. The size of Calibre 101 is matched by the diminutive size of the snow-setting – a particularly impressive achievement considering the tiny gemstones measuring just 0.5 to 1.2 mm in diameter and the finesse of the gem-set surface.

Onyx and mother-of¬pearl provide Calibre 101 with a splendid geometrical backdrop framed on either side by the enamelled gadroons of the white gold case. The contrasting marquetry-worked décor pays vibrant tribute to the Art Deco movement, forcefully evoking the pure and regular linear shapes of that fascinating era. This eminently masculine model, illuminated by its mother-of-pearl flange, distils time in an aesthetic and technically rigorous manner that transforms illusion into glowing reality.

Ref. 5101R 10-Day Tourbillon

Six years ago, the Ref. 5101P turned heads and won over hearts.

The rectangular timepiece with a platinum case, a form movement, two mainspring barrels for a power reserve of 10 days, and a tourbillon escapement flaunted its assets with the discreetness and understatement that is so typical for Patek Philippe. Now, the time has come to introduce a new version: the Ref. 5101R in 18K rose gold.

The benchmark for marathon runners: a 10-day power reserve

Launched in the year 2000,

Patek Philippe’s marathon runner now in rose gold

the 10-day Patek Philippe Ref. 5100 initiated a trend that since then galvanized many high-end watchmaking companies.

New watches with power reserves of four, six, and eight days appeared year after year.

But in 2003, Patek Philippe outdistanced other contenders with the Ref. 5101, which in addition to the 10-day power reserve also featured a tourbillon escapement. To this very day, it is still the only crown-wound wristwatch with such an extended autonomy.

It must be noted that the power reserve refers to the period in which the watch preserves a functional amplitude and thus fulfills strict rate accuracy requirements. This holds true for the new Ref. 5150 R, which runs accurately for 240 hours when fully wound.

The advantage is obvious: it can easily be left off the wrist for a week without having to be resynchronized.

In the Patek Philippe caliber 28-20/222 manufacture movement, the requisite energy is stored in two mainspring barrels.

A coupling system with a slipping bridle spring on the first mainspring barrel prevents overtightening of the mainspring and blocking of the spring barrels when fully wound.

The power-reserve indicator at 12 o’clock on the dial informs the owner of the movement’s residual power reserve. The 11th segment of its scale is red, signaling the need to rewind the watch.

This requires about 100 turns of the crown, a reasonable effort in relation to the 10-day power reserve. Half a turn is already sufficient to build up a reserve of somewhat more than an hour.

In this extraordinary caliber, Patek Philippe implemented yet another rare mechanism to demonstrate its horological prowess: a tourbillon escapement that makes the hearts of watch lovers beat faster.

The device consists of 72 individual parts that together weigh a scant 0.3 grams. And all steel parts of the filigreed cage are meticulously finished by hand.

But this does not nearly explain the extraordinary amount of time required to craft this timepiece.

Great shape

An incomparable movement like the caliber 28-20/222 deserves a case that lives up to its intrinsic ingenuity.

The striking rectangular form in the art deco style is reminiscent of the peerless classics of the 1920s and 1930s. With its sleek three-tiered flanks, it expresses the epitome of elegance. The warm hue of 18K rose gold now transposes the fascination of this remarkable design movement straight to the 21st century.

Despite its considerable length of more than five centimeters, the anatomically curved case gently hugs the wrist. This curvature is also followed by the convex sapphire crystal, which is ground parallel inside and outside to

Genghis Khan Haute JoaillerieWestminster Carillon Tourbillon Jaquemarts Minute Repeater

Ulysse Nardin has blended the complex art of traditional

mechanical watch making and the outstanding art of Haute Joaillerie into one extraordinary timepiece – The Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie.

Each diamond is brilliantly cut by a highly-skilled precious stone cutter and integrated into the detailed case, adding expert craftsmanship to a remarkably innovative

timepiece.

This unique mechanical timepiece crafted in 18 ct rose or white gold is fitted with 60 white or black baguette diamonds over the bezel and 28 white or black baguette diamonds on the lugs, magnifying the impact of the design of the black onyx dial and the 4 hand-crafted warriors in action.

The interior of the bezel is either set with 48 white and 12 black

The high quality of the 148 baguette diamonds (approximately 6.2 ct, Top Wesselton) in combination with the extraordinary mechanics of the Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie represent the best of the art of fine watch engineering.

Genghis Khan The first ever Westminster Carillon Tourbillon Jaquemarts Minute Repeater

The visible one minute Tourbillon is integrated into the black onyx watch dial. The Tourbillon bridge is the same shape as those used on the Tourbillons James Pellaton produced for Ulysse Nardin at the beginning of the 20th century.

The well-finished movement with 36 jewels has a diameter of 27.60 mm and a height of 8.50 mm. All movement parts have been decorated, angled and finished by hand.

The Westminster has four gongs, each with a different tone (Mi-Do-Re-Sol). When the repeater is activated, the hour sound is Sol and the minute sound is Mi.All four gongs sound in three different sequences for the quarters:

1st quarter: Mi-Do-Re-Sol 2nd quarter: Mi-Do-Re-Sol/Sol-Re-Mi-Do 3rd quarter: Mi-Do-Re-Sol/Sol-Re-Mi-Do/Mi-Do-Re-Sol

The Jaquemarts

The figures on the black onyx dial are hand-carved in 18 ct rose or white gold. The movements of the Jaquemarts are synchronized with the sound of the gongs.

The movements of one of the saber-wielding combatants on the left side are synchronized with the

gong sounding the hours, while the movement of the horse rider thrusting his spear through the ring indicates the minutes.

All Jaquemarts, including the musician, are animated to move with the sounding of the quarters. The Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie embodies the highest ideals of both

the art of traditional mechanical watch making both in technical and artistic skills.

The Genghis Khan Haute Joaillerie is available in 18 ct rose or white gold in a limited edition of 30 pieces.

The spectacular outcome of years of diligent development, the Breguet

Double Tourbillon includes a hand-wound movement fitted with a pair of tourbillon regulators rotating on the hour axis. An aesthetic as well as a technical masterpiece, the watch features today a pink gold case 44 mm in diameter housing over 570 components, all painstakingly assembled by Breguet’s master watchmakers.

Working independently from one another, two tourbillons are coupled by means of differential gears and mounted on a rotating centre plate effecting a complete revolution in twelve hours. The differential device conveys the two tourbillons’

mean rate to the rotating centre plate and to the time-display mechanism. The rate of the watch is thus the mean rate of the two tourbillons, making its movement twice as precise as a normal one. The hour is shown by the bridge connecting the tourbillon regulators doubling as a watch hand, while the minutes are indicated by a standard hand at centre.Impeccable finish and spectacular new engraving work on the back of the movement further underscore this exceptional timepiece’s appeal. A manually engine-turned mainplate, a chapter ring inscribed with Roman numerals, pink gilt Breguet hands, a movement with decorated bridges and bars and other parts beveled and polished further testify to an exceptionally

handsome design of unrivalled beauty and refinement. First introduced at the 2006 Basle Fair but initially available in insufficient numbers, this grande complication design with double tourbillon was in 2008 delivered to Breguet clients who had ordered the watch, often paying in advance. Despite an increase in recent orders joining as yet undelivered earlier orders, newly added manufacturing capacity has allowed Breguet to schedule delivery of the first pink gold models for the end of 2009.

The first manned lunar landing on the 20th of July, 1969 was the

greatest, most dramatic scientific achievement in human history. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56 GMT on the 21st of July, Aldrin was wearing his OMEGA Speedmaster and a legend was born.

An interesting footnote: the electronic timing system on the Lunar Module was not functioning correctly so Armstrong had left his watch aboard as a reliable backup.

Now OMEGA joins the world in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing with the release of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition.

It is fitting that the distinctive timepiece is powered by OMEGA’s famous calibre 1861, the same movement used in the original Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch.

The stainless steel casebody is delivered with a stainless steel bracelet which has been upgraded to include OMEGA’s patented screw and pin system.

The black dial also recalls that of the Moon Watch with some key differences. The small seconds counter (sub-dial) has been created in the form of a small medallion which features an adaptation of Apollo 11’s famous mission patch: an eagle descends to the lunar surface with an olive branch representing peace in its claws.

In the distance, far above the

horizon, the earth is visible. The patch, interestingly, was designed by Michael Collins who remained in the Apollo 11 capsule as Command Module Pilot while his colleagues Armstrong and Aldrin were in the Lunar Module and on the moon.

The watch’s hour, minute and the red-tipped chronograph seconds hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. The minute and hour chronograph counter hands are white and the brushed, rhodium-plated small seconds hand offers an attractive contrast to the medallion on the counter.

Below the words “OMEGA Speedmaster PROFESSIONAL” on the dial, the legend 02:56 GMT – the exact time that Neil Armstrong made his “one small step” onto the moon – is displayed in red.

The 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s dial is protected by Hesalite, the same robust, shatter-proof acrylic crystal found on the original Moon Watch.

Hesalite was ideally suited for use in space – there was no chance that it could break apart and send potentially dangerous fragments into the low-gravity environment.

A small, distinctive OMEGA logo has been etched evocatively inside the Hesalite crystal.

The Apollo 11 “Eagle” mission patch is stamped on the caseback along with the words, “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON”, the limited edition number (0000/7969), and “July 21, 1969”, the date Armstrong and Aldrin first stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56, the time which is printed on the dial.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11

“40th Anniversary” Limited Edition is delivered in a black presentation box which also includes a 42 mm silver medal (the same diameter as the watch) featuring an engraving of the mission patch on one side with the words “APOLLO 11, 40th ANNIVERARY”.

On the reverse side, the medal is engraved, “THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”; “LAUNCHED JULY 16 1969”; “LANDED JULY 20, 1969”; and “RETURNED, JULY 24, 1969” along with OMEGA’s name and logo.

Also in the presentation box is a certificate of authenticity and an envelope containing a black polishing cloth with information commemorating the historic space flight.

Centuries from now, historians will continue to look back in wonder at the Apollo 11 mission.

For the first time ever, human beings had left Earth, walked on another celestial body, and returned safely home.

OMEGA will always be proud of the role it played in the greatestscientific adventure of all time.

Master of its Class

A classically elegant masterpiece is the latest result of the long-time collaboration between the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory and the Glashütte Original watch manufactory. Two world-famous Saxon inventions unite in the Senator Meissen Tourbillon: Meissen porcelain and the flying tourbillon.

The latter is an invention by Alfred Helwig from 1920, who served as an instructor at the German School of Watchmaking in Glashütte. The balance, pallet lever, and escape wheel are housed in a cantilevered carriage that turns 360° once a minute, thus neutralizing rate deviations of the balance due to gravity. The subsidiary seconds display is attached to the carriage of the flying tourbillon and is

framed by a polished gold second scale for added clarity.

The Senator Meissen Tourbillon is a picture of stylish classicism in its 40 mm rose gold case, outfitted with exquisite technology.

The passing of time is measured by traditionally blued hour and minute hands that glide across the surface of the wafer-thin, white Meissen porcelain dial. The hours are marked by hand-painted Roman numerals that are painstakingly applied to the dial and require the utmost skill from the Meissen factory’s script painters.

The Glashütte Original lettering and the crossed swords that are the trademark of the Meissen porcelain manufactory are also hand painted. The painting of the dial alone requires eight hours to complete.

Another significant challenge is posed by milling the cutaway needed to observe the flying tourbillon at the 6 o’clock position on the 0,8 mm thin porcelain dial - a process necessitating long years of accumulated knowledge at the Meissen manufactory in dealing with the porcelain’s unique qualities.

The Senator Meissen Tourbillon is powered by the exquisitely finished automatic manufacture Caliber 94-11, which can be admired through the antireflective sapphire crystal back of the rose gold case. The 48-hour power reserve makes for easy handling, efficiently meeting the needs of the modern wearer.

The Louisiana alligator skin strap and folding clasp, attached to the case by integrated lugs, ensures a comfortable and secure fit.

The Tissot Veloci-T timepieces are streets ahead in terms of both

precision timekeeping and contemporary looks.

Elaborate dials, together with eye-catching colour and material combinations, put these chronographs straight into the fast lane of design and style.Wearers will make a clear statement with these watches, whether they are at home in sports gear or urban in-places.

First in line for compliments

Tissot Veloci-T watches promise to attract welcome attention at a rapid rate. Dynamic designs play a leading role in emphasizing the theme of speed against time.

A figure-of-eight shaped circuit winds its way around two of the counters.

The decoration of the discs on the dial embraces two distinct styles, made up of vertical stripes.

Even the strap echoes the linear theme with a raised stripe running through its centre.

Racy combinationsThe Tissot Velcoi-T leads the style field with striking combinations of modern colours and materials.

A predominantly black or white dial is contrasted with either pink or yellow PVD elements on the counters and tachymetre bezel.

A closer look is rewarded by the

detection of fiery red details on two of the chronograph counters.

The dial’s background colour is matched perfectly with the black or white sculptured rubber strap.

The Tissot eye for detail signs off the design of these distinctive chronographs with a multi-surface crown and golden push buttons with a textured top, all very easy to operate, even at speed.

The Sonic FactorHamilton introduces Khaki X-Mach with its integrated facility to measure an aircraft’s speed relative to that of sound

The Khaki X-Mach takes Hamilton aviationwatches to exhilarating

new heights with its facility to measure the Mach numberof an aircraft, the speed it is moving through the air

divided by the speed of sound under the same atmospheric conditions. This sophisticated chronograph timepiece expresses the inspiration of the skies through relentless attention to detail and bold looks reminiscent of the cockpit. The Khaki X-Mach assures happy landings for its stylish wearer, with a combination of soave elegance and mechanical fascination.

Mechanics in motion

Pilots simply set the pressure

altitude (PA) and calibrated air speed (CAS) measured by the instrument in the cockpit by turning the left crown of the watch to reveal the Mach number in ISA (International Standard Atmosphere) conditions on the bezel.

This transforms the timepiece into a stunning portable Machmeter. For wearers with their feet firmly on the ground, the Hamilton Khaki X-Mach watches increase the exhilaration factor with dynamic, sporty design.

metal and carbon-fiber surrounds to protect the crowns, as well as nostalgic flying-jacket style stitching and studs on the bracelet.

Tiny red touches, for instance at the tip of one of the counter hands, remind of high-precision cockpit instruments.A compass-style arrowhead on the back case symbolizes speed and signs off the ultimate aviator’s style statement.

Flying colors

All of the variations of the Hamilton Khaki X-Mach have a smooth black dial with easy to read silver-coloredindices and matching counter

frames.

There is a choice of a black or silver-colored case with fine white or black numerical markings around the bezel to give it the look of an altimeter.

The date display is at 3 o’clock and framed with a shape resembling the wedge put underneath a plane’s wheels when it is stationary on the tarmac.

Its surface is finely decorated with an elegant ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloché pattern.

For the bracelet, wearers can either select brown leather to coordinate with the flying jackets,

headgear and gloves of yesteryear, or contemporary black leather or rubber attachments. In all of its interpretations, the Khaki X-Mach is ready for take-off, on airport and fashion runways.

International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) is an atmospheric model of how the pressure, temperature, density and viscosity of the earth’s atmosphere change over a wide range of altitudes.

It consists of tables of values at various altitudes.

Calibrated Airspeed (CAS) is a measure of the speed at which an aircraft is moving through the air.Pressure Altitude (PA) is the indicated altitude when an altimeter is set to an agreed baseline pressure setting.

This setting – 101,325 Pa, equivalent to 1013.25 millibar (or hectopascals), or 29.92 inches Hg – is equivalent to the air pressure at Mean Sea Level (MSL) in the ISA.

Mach Number (Ma or M) is the speed of an object moving through air, or any fluid substance, divided by the speed of sound as it is in that substance.

It is commonly used to represent an object‘s speed, when it istravelling at (or at multiples of) the speed of sound.

Mach 1.0 is the speed of sound, Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound etc.

The History Of Diamonds

Page 99: Premium Autumn 2009

PREMIUM I JEWELRY

99 I PREMIUM - Autumn 2009

For the last 3000 to 4000 years, diamonds have held special magic

for Kings, Queens and their subjects.

Diamonds have stood for wealth, power, love, spirit and magical powers. Kings in olden days would wear into battle heavy leather breast plates studded with diamonds and other precious stones.

It was believed that diamonds were fragments of stars and the teardrops of the Gods.

The diamonds possessed magical qualities for the Gods and help powers far beyond the understanding of the common man.

Because of these beliefs, the warriors stayed clear of the Kings and others who were fortunate to have the magical diamonds in their breast plates.

Until the 15th Century only kings wore diamonds as a symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. Over the centuries, the diamond acquired its unique status as the ultimate gift of love.

It was said that cupids’ arrows were tipped with diamonds that have a magic that no other else can equal.

Since the creation of diamonds they have been associated with romance and legend.

The Greeks believed the fire in the diamond reflected the constant

flame of love. It wasn’t until 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, that the diamond engagement ring was introduced.

Placing the ring on the third finger of the left hand dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the Vena Amors, vein of love, runs directly from heart to the tip of the third finger.

The earliest record of diamond-polishing is Indian, and probably dates from the fourteenth century.

There are also contemporary references to the practice of diamond polishing in Venice. The earliest reference to diamond cutting is in 1550 in Antwerp, the most important diamond center of the period, where a diamond-cutters’ guild was soon to be established.

Today, 4 out of 5 diamond stones that are mined are not used in jewelry. Only 20% of stones that are mined can be cut and used in jewelry. The small stone that makes up the small four tons are industrial diamond.

Diamonds are an ideal of mechanical parts that must resist wear and undergo a sudden temperature changes and that must not change size, create friction or rust.

Yet, despite the industrial uses of diamonds, women all over the world love to own diamond jewelry.

This beautiful gemstone has always been renowned for its lustrous beauty, and will remain so until the end of time.

Audemars Piguet and the Gstaad Classic: a winning alliance

The Manufacture Audemars Piguet, which is regularly involved in a

number of historical car rallies such as the Tour Auto Optic 2ooo in France and the National Classic Tour in Belgium, becomes title partner of the Gstaad Classic and marks the occasion by presenting a Royal Oak Offshore “Gstaad Classic 2009” limited series.

In cooperation with an experienced organizing committee, DSL Organization, Peter Auto and the Gstaad Automobile Club, Audemars Piguet is associating with the “Gstaad Classic” a race for pre-1976 collector’s cars. The cars will drive along Alpine roads amid

the magnificent unspoilt scenery of the Saanenland region. After the customary technical checks on September 2nd, the race will start on September 3rd, 2009 and will last for three full days spent discovering the three routes that each begin and end in the village of Gstaad itself. Aiming to cover a total of 800 kilometers, enlivened by 9 special sections on closed roads – a first in Switzerland – around one hundred teams will set out at the wheel of their classic racing car, competing either in the “regularity” or “competition” category. Around ten vehicles sporting the Audemars Piguet Racing Team livery will be taking part in the race.

They will be vying with seasoned competitors to reach the higher echelons of the ranking. An exhibition area at the heart of the village will host a number of prestigious cars, to the delight of classic car enthusiasts, along with various activities relating to the field of fine watchmaking.

The end of each day’s racing will see competitors return to the glamour and charm of Gstaad, where they can revel in the plush and friendly atmosphere of the grand luxury hotels, relaxing and savoring the quality of service of these prestigious establishments on which the resort has built its reputation.

They will also be able to admire the title partner’s new watches in the Audemars Piguet Boutique located at the heart of the Grand Hôtel Park. A Royal Oak Offshore special edition has been created to immortalize this wonderful race and will be officially presented during a gala evening to be held on September 5th in the legendary Gstaad Palace hotel. This resolutely sporting watch featuring bead-blasted titanium is a perfect blend of lightness and sturdiness.

The “well-oiled mechanism” of its self- winding movement combines accurate timekeeping with high-quality finishing. Moreover, its perforated black leather strap is a nod to that indispensable accessory of the gentleman driver, the famous 1950s style driver’s gloves.

This model is also distinguished by its case- back engraved with the “Gstaad Classic 2009” logo. Once again, this new timepiece echoes the brand fundamentals as well as the values conveyed by this prestigious race: technology, as well as a quest for performance, precision and aesthetic elegance. During the evening, Audemars Piguet will auction number 0 of this magnificent limited edition timepiece. The funds raised will be donated to the Brain and Spinal Cord Institute (ICM), an association supported by numerous celebrities such as Michael Schumacher (founding member), Zinédine Zidane (the iconic spokesperson

of the European Leucodystrophy Association) and Jean Todt (founding member), which aims to raise public awareness of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Formula 1 racing driver and brand ambassador Sébastien Buemi will be attending the event in order to support this charitable operation, along with a number of eminent personalities and of course

Audemars Piguet’s CEO Philippe Merk – who will present the future owner of this Gstaad Classic 2009 will the luxurious box that will house this exclusive creation. Moreover, the best-placed competitors will be duly rewarded for their sporting achievements and will doubtless make a date in their calendars for the next edition in 2011!

Newcastle ended on June 30th and one of the summer’s biggest transfer riddles was solved as Owen completed a move to the Premier League and World Club Champions.

The 2001 European footballer of the year has not been called up to the England squad in recent times, but a move to United gives Owen the chance to revitalise his international career, just months before the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Michael Owen said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands. I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here.

I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting here from day one.

“At Tissot we are very proud of our extraordinary ambassador and the partnership that we have had

for more than 10 years. We would like to congratulate Michael to this excellent opportunity to play with this world-famous club.

Michael Owen fits perfectly with the brand’s values and we believe that he is a real asset to our brand and an example to many young people around the world, and long may that continue to be the case.” said Tissot President, François Thiébaud.

Michael Owen will wear the number 7 shirt at Manchester United next season, one of the most revered shirts in football, having previously been worn by greats such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and, most recently Christiano Ronaldo.

Sports partnerships have always been an integral part of Tissot’s DNA and it has been involved in timing world class sporting events for decades. Partnering with active athletes like Michael Owen also underlines the dynamic nature of the brand.

Michael Owen is a consistent role model for football lovers around the world. He personifies the Tissot

Roman Holiday for Rosolino and Phelps OMEGA’s Swimming Ambassadors Enjoy A

Rare Break

Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps was welcomed to

Rome for the 13th FINA World Championships by fellow OMEGA brand ambassador, Italian swimming star Massimiliano Rosolino. In a scene reminiscent of the film Roman Holiday, the two swimming sensations posed for pictures with a classic Vespa in front of the VillageRoma09, where the competitions are taking place.

Asked about his impressions of the city hosting the World Championships, Phelps said, “What I’ve seen is beautiful.

I envy my mom because she’ll have more time to see the sights. Not surprisingly, I’ve been spending a lot of time in the pool getting ready for my events. “

Phelps and Rosolino were relaxed as they chatted amiably and posed for photographers. After their brief and unusual break ahead of the start of competition, the two agreed that it was time to go back to work.

Michael Phelps and Massimiliano Rosolino have both made history in international swimming competitions: Phelps will always be remembered for winning eight gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games; Rosolino is the most successful Italian swimmer of all

time. Both are brand ambassadors for OMEGA, the Official Timekeeper

of Roma09 – the 13th FINA World Championships.

Play 99.6 FM Touch it to Win It CompetitionOfficial timekeeper Victorinox Swiss Army

During the month of July, City Mall visitors noticed a flurry of activity in

the center of the mall around a brand new blue Toyota FJ Cruiser. A crowd of people gathered around the car, touching it, but not to see how the car feels, but they were promised that the person who touched the car the longest would be the new proud owner of this car.

Energized by this promise, hundreds of contestants signed up for the challenge and they were closely scrutinized by Play 99.6 judges to make sure their hands were constantly touching the car. Only 12 contestants who racked up the most number of hours touching the car over a 3-week period were

allowed to participate in the final round. Each contestant wore a Victorinox Swiss Army Chrono Classic XLS MT (MultiTask) watch so they too could keep track of how many hours they kept their hands on the car.

At the start of the final round, 12 participants were closer to the goal of owning a new car; the only task

at hand was to be the last person standing.

But after 53 hours straight of keeping her hands on the car, Zaena Rihani was the last woman standing! She proudly drove off with her new Toyota FJ Cruiser while wearing her Chrono Classic XLS MT (MultiTask).

PREMIUM I INTERVIEW

120 I PREMIUM - Autumn 2009

In each issue of Premium, five questions are posed to leaders in the Jordanian watch and jewelry market to gain some insight on how they achieved their success. In this issue, Premium had the privilege to sit down with Mohammad Al Kalha, Manager of Kayali Jewelry - Swiefieh.

5 Questions With Premium

How did you get started in the watch business?Back in 1989 I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Accounting from Jordan University. Right after graduation and the end of my military service, I joined our family jewelry business in Al Balad. Through this position, I gained my first jewelry experiences, and in 1992 Mr. Tarek Kayali offered me a position with Kayali Jewelry in Al Balad since the company was going through managerial restructuring. Afterwards, in 1997 the branch moved to Sweifieh, and I’ve been managing Kayali Jewelry’s Sweifieh branch since then.

What major changes have you seen or experienced in the Jordanian watch market during the last 5 years? The first challenge was leaving a

family business to work for Kayali Jewelry which is a large and exceptional Jordanian company; however, I have never felt as if I wasn’t working for my private business as the success of Kayali Jewelry is also my personal success which wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for God and the confidence and authority granted to me by Mr. Samir and Mr. Tarek Kayali. In addition, the rapid development of the jewelry industry in Jordan has been another great challenge. These developments have required a lot from the jewelry industry especially of the players that wanted to remain on top of the game. Furthermore, there are many new jewelers that have entered the jewelry market and customer’s tastes have increased in variety. These changes require constant courses in the Jewelry industry and of course customer care and satisfaction as well as keeping up with the latest jewelry trends.

Where do you see this market in the next five years? As we are all aware, the world is currently facing an economic downturn, and Jordan is also witnessing this condition. As a

result, people have lost their confidence in the stock market and instead are investing in gold which has led to a continuous increase in the price of gold. Therefore, I expect the price of gold to continue to increase further. As for Kayali Jewelry specifically, I’m sure we will continue to satisfy our clients and remain Jordan’s favorite jeweler especially since we have our three showrooms in Sweifieh, City Mall and the newly expanded Um Uthainah as well as showcases at Time Center in Abdoun Mall and Mecca Mall. Kayali Jewelry will also continue to offer our clients internationally acclaimed brands such as Gucci, Pomellato, Splendore, and of course the latest addition to our family; Bloom.

What steps have you taken to increase your expertise in the diamond and gold field? As I mentioned earlier, my college education has helped me very much in my career; furthermore, I continue to learn every day from the people around me, especially from Mr. Samir Kayali, my colleagues and even my customers. None the less, every chance I get, I sign up for specialized jewelry industry courses such as courses related to diamonds, gemstones, and more.

What in your opinion has been your greatest career accomplishment?Working with Kayali Jewelry and my affection for my coworkers and clients which has made me relentless in providing the best customer service out there, especially since at Kayali Jewelry we work together as one team as the success of one us is the success of us all and the company as a whole. It’s been a great accomplishment for me.
