For Dissemination of the Mass Scale and Calibration of Weights
Traceable weighing results require traceablemass standards.
This also applies to the calibration of thesestandards at regular intervals. As a leadingmanufacturer of weighing instruments andweights worldwide, Sartorius also offers masscomparators for the metrological determina-tion of mass. These instruments ensure thedesired accuracy and traceability of weighingresults in many applications throughout the world.
Sartorius mass comparators are used atnational institutes of metrology, in nationaland industrial calibration laboratories as wellas in weights and measures offices, includingverification offices for legal metrology, to meet their exceptional requirements formeasuring accuracy and reliability.
New Sartorius mass comparators have been designed to cover a wide variety of ranges:

Dissemination of the Mass Scale
Automated weight handling allows the best possible, operator-independentrepeatability from 1 mg to 50 kgSartorius mass comparators with load alter-nators automatically perform mass compari-son of individual standards and weightgroups. OIML weights can be used in groupsto disseminate the mass scale, without theneed for additional cylindrical or stackableweights. This prevents unnecessary loss ofaccuracy.
Mass comparators from 100 g to 20 kg provide 4-position load alternators foraccommodating individual or combinationsof weights. These can be compared with one another in any combination duringa measurement series.
Load alternators for Sartorius mass compara-tors with a 50-kg capacity have 2 positions. The space available is so large that you caneven determine the mass of relatively bigobjects, such as disk weights, buoyancy artifacts or pressure disks.
For National Mass Standard Institutes werecommend using YCM02C/YCM03C –parameter sensor system for determining the air density. See the “MetrologicalAccessories”.
In addition, we recommend using the metrology software program for data transferfrom the YCM02C/YCM03C to an PC and forsimple high-precision mass determination. The software allows data transfer from automated mass comparators equipped withload alternators as well as from manuallyoperated mass comparators. See “Softwarefor mass metrology” (page 12).

Analytical Range
These mass comparators can be used in arange of 1 mg to 1 kg in calibration laborato-ries. By selecting one micro-, semi-micro- and analytical model each, you will cover theentire needs of a calibration laboratory up to1 kg. With these full-range mass comparators, you can calibrate not only weights that havethe usual nominal mass values but also testweights of any mass.
All analytical range mass comparators havebeen designed so that they do not requirecentering devices that would restrict thespace available within the weighing chamber. The power supply and the electronics fordisplay and evaluation are separate from theweighing system to prevent heat from affect-ing the accuracy of the results.
Density determination is easy with a Sartorius mass comparator using the hangerfor below-balance weighing. The hanger for weighing is a standard feature on mostmass comparators in this product spectrum. Besides the hanger for below-balance weigh-ing, the mass comparators can be suppliedwith a density kit YDK01. Please contact usfor further details.
Example of an application:The procedure meets the requirements ofOIML R 111. Weighing in a reference liquid isjust as easy as weighing in air.

Universal Range
You have a choice of four mass comparatorsfor all routine tasks performed in a calibra-tion laboratory in the range above 1 kg. These instruments give you a continuouselectronic weighing range from 0 g to theirmaximum capacity. The Centermatic for theCC30002 and CC50002 makes it easy for you to position heavy weights or other massstandards accurately within the markings, and improves the standard deviation of yourmeasurements.
The mass comparators shown on the rightenable you to meet special accuracy require-ments in the range from 1 kg to 20 kg.
The weighing pan is raised and lowered by aservomotor, which optimally protects theweighing system and eliminates errors thatwould otherwise be caused by the operator. As a result, this motorized design allowsespecially low uncertainties of measurementwith long-term consistency to be achieved.

Testing and Research
Testing and research laboratories arefrequently faced with weighing tasks thatrequire higher accuracy than that provided bynormal balances and scales. These accuracyproblems can often be solved by differentialweighing. Moreover, weighing instrumentssuitable for these tasks must also be designedto withstand tough industrial environments. The Sartorius mass comparators shown hereexactly meet these requirements.
These mass comparators are used in the mostdiverse applications, such as:
• Mass standard laboratories for rectangularbar weights
• Production of highly accurate gasstandards
• Weighing of high-value goods• Weighing in hot cells, etc.

The Complete Series of Sartorius Mass Comparators at a GlanceAccording to OIML R111
This bar graph is based on the results of threeor six mass comparisons for the lowest limitof each bar.
For higher loads within each bar, less masscomparisons are required. If the number ofmass comparisons is increased, the ranges ofapplication indicated by the individual barscan be extended.
Some of the mass comparator models fordissemination of the mass scale even exceedthe stringent requirements for the uncertain-ty of measurement of E1 standards, so theycan also be used in national primary standardlaboratories.

The Complete Series of Sartorius Mass Comparators at a Glance According to ASTM E617
11
With the introduction of the new OIMLDirective R111 comes the recommendationthat the magnetic properties of weights betested. This confirms that the requirementsplaced on weights no longer only apply togeometric quantities, the density of thematerial comprising the weight, or its surfacequalities. On the contrary, many scientificevaluations support the idea that the suscep-tibility and magnetization of weights must be considered.
Susceptometer methodThere are several methods for defining themagnetic properties of weights. The so-calledsusceptometer method is recommended in OIML Directive R111 for testing weights ofthe accuracy classes E1, E2, F1 and F2. Thenew YSZ01C | YSZ02C susceptometer fromSartorius enables you to easily and conve-niently determine the susceptibility andmagnetization of weights in accordance with OIML R111.
In this procedure, the interaction between apermanent magnet and the weight beingtested is determined as a force using a high-resolution balance.
Taking into account the known properties ofthe test magnet, the distance of the weightfrom the test magnet and the weight geo-metry, the desired magnetic quantities of theweight can be calculated.
Compared to other well-known equipment, the Sartorius susceptometer stands out on account of its highly compact design.Integration of the individual components, aninnovative turning mechanism for adjustingthe position of the test magnet and simpleadjustment of the height of the loading plat-form make working with the susceptometersimple and effective. This significantlyimproves the repeatability of measurements. The susceptometer is available in two differ-ent resolution levels. The YSZ01C features 10-µg resolution, and the YSZ02C has 1-µgresolution.
Application softwareThe software that comes standard with thesusceptometer is very easy to use and enablesdata to be automatically transferred from theunit. It also supports the user through allrequired steps and provides assistance withsettings before and during a measurement.Menu prompts request all relevant data andguide the user through the steps necessaryfor performing a measurement. The results ofthe test are recorded and can be exported tohigher-level databases.
A user-friendly, all-in-one solutionThe YSZ01C | YSZ02C susceptometer fromSartorius rounds out the array of accessoriesavailable for high-resolution balances andmass comparators. Along with specializedsoftware, the susceptometer provides aunique, complete solution that enables you to ensure that the limits of the magneticproperties of weights are maintained.
