Kev Ballater: Aged in his 30s. Stand Up comedian on the way down. “They say you play venuestwice, once on the way up, and once on the way down.” Kev is playing these gigs on the way down.

Kev is an experienced stand up who has found himself at a point where his career has lost itsmomentum. After a Perrier award nomination in 2002 he had occasional spots on TV whichdiminished over time. He split up with his wife, and gradually, his phone stopped ringing as timeshave moved on, and his 15 minutes ended. He wrote a regular column for a Lads mag. He stresseshe wrote for the print version not the online version. His material is observational and he is a goodcompare. Very at ease when confronting the audience for laughs. His material is mostly him feelingbitter at life and sorry for himself.

He now lives in a flat with his current girlfriend. He does not have a day job. He and his ex wife havenothing to do with each other anymore. He dresses casual/scruffy. His flat is very lived in, and is notimmaculate. Living room has a coffee table which is always buried under stuff.

He is not satisfied with where his comedy career is right now, but currently lacks the motivation todo what it takes to change it. Deep down he does have talent but his frustration sometimes boilsover into his comedy material which can turn offensive due to his career frustrations.

He has many stories to tell from his years doing comedy. After his girlfriend, Sue is his best friend. He has other friends on the stand up scene who are the acts and promoters that he hasn’t yet fallenout with. Sue likes him because he listens to her. When Sue and Kev get together they are comedysnobs. Privately they like to bitch about people. Others like him because he can be funny sociallyand always have something to say. He is brutally honest. He is a liberalist. He will die happy whenhe is rich and recognised for his comedy talent. If it wasn’t for comedy he’d really rather be aserious fiction author of drama and suspense.

A good time for Kev is a well paid gig in front of a large good crowd who are well warmed up,followed by pints afterwards.

Due to Kev’s strong ego he has fallen out with comics and promoters over the years. Kev hasbecome good friends with people but only to fall out once his ego and opinion clashed anddifferences arose. For example differing opinions on how a comedy night should be run. Falling outwith people who he believes let him down.

Kev is approachable but when drunk becomes bitter and argumentative.

On the outside she puts on a steely front. This is a bit of a social front to not show any weakness. She wants to appear strong because she wants to be independent. Sue’s Dad died when she wasyoung and as a result comedy is a way for her to enjoy life and make up for the misery she sufferedwhen she was younger.

She takes pleasure in winning petty victories. At a pub quiz she would argue the toss over thequestion “What is the most common chemical in a swimming pool?”, so she would argue with thequiz master all night that she is right with her answer “it’s water not chlorine!”. Opposite to this shedoes have a candid fair side.

Sees herself as strong spirited. Others see her as slightly cold. Dry sense of humour. She works in aclothes shop having to deal with customers every day.

Rob Jenkins: New stand up. His POV.

Aged 30 something. Is of average height and weight. Dresses in geeky and jokey Tee-shirts. Enjoysstandup comedy. His best friend is his girlfriend who he loves. Rob has a couple of friends he stillhangs around with occasionally who go back a long way. They are fellow geeks into film, music, telly, and gaming. Rob knows nothing about football. He is educated to degree level in history butnever got a graduate job, and so has been at his current work place since leaving university.

Intelligent. Academic. Rob’s talent is that he is good at highlighting the irony of a situation, this iswhere he looks good. He is starting to lose his self esteem due to the amount of years that are going

by for him still being at the same work place. This means that Rob would rather walk away indisappointment than have a hostile confrontation. Rob also sees things literally and is honestenough to state what he sees out loud. This means that if he spots a flaw in something someonesays he’ll just call it straight out before thinking.

He shares a rented home with his long term girlfriend. Has a clerical desk job that he hates. Nothappy with his life, in particular he is not satisfied with his work. He is a nice guy and people takeadvantage of his good nature. His good nature also makes him a trusting and gullible person. Forinstance colleagues at work would wind him up with pranks. He doesn’t drive he walks and usespublic transport. Rob has a horrible neighbour who always has something to complain about and isthe bane of Rob’s life. Rob considers the worst thing in his life is being middle class but having touse public transport and can’t afford to buy a home yet with his girlfriend. What he doesn’t know isthat she earns more than she is letting on and is having doubts about buying with him.

Geeky past times like telly, Sci-fi, and gaming excite Rob into life. Every New Year’s eve he resolvesto get a new job, changing his mind over what job each year.

He is likeable because of his gullible nature which makes him come across as innocent and honest.

Spends his spare time either watching films and telly, or goes out for the day with his girlfriend.

Sees himself as capable of doing better than the humble clerical job that he works in. Is seen byothers as ideal to fill the humble clerical job that he does. Rob finds witty stand up jokes funny whichis different to the humour of his work colleagues who prefer practical jokes. Rob is a big worrier, andso stresses out about things.

Gets on well with his parents who are very straight and sensible. Is an only child.

Vicky:

Rob’s girlfriend. Lives with Rob in a shared flat. Aged mid 20s. She wears casual H&M and Primark.

Likes kids but is not ready to have any of her own because she is not sure that she wants to haveany with Rob, although she does love him. They have been together for 4 years. A great time forVicky is to stop in at home and watch X Factor and Rom Coms with Rob. Vicky has an Intelligent andfriendly nature but there are two sides of her personality. Generally she is soft and caring but whenpushed she can be very firm and forthright. The mix of these two traits means she has a stronginfluence over Rob. For instance Vicky would use Rob if she was feeling shy in the company of strangers and she was ready to go home, she would whisper to Rob for him to tell everyone they’releaving instead of saying it out load to everyone herself. Vicky is a very needy person. Works in alibrary. Nobody knows there is a lad at her work that she likes. She drives a car to work. Worst partof her life is being away from her family. Affectionate. Clingy. Supportive.
