FROM THE COVER:

The Writer RevealedErnest Hemingway, the iconic literary figure considered one of the

greatest American writers and among the first to live and work at the treacherous nexus of art and celebrity, is the subject of an upcoming three-part, six-hour documentary series directed by award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. The documentary paints an intimate picture of Hemingway the writer — who captured on paper the complexities of the human condition in spare and profound prose, and whose work remains deeply influential around the world — while also penetrating the myth of Hemingway the man’s man to reveal a deeply troubled and ultimately tragic figure. The film also explores Hemingway’s limitations and biases as an artist and a man of his time.

Hemingway — written by Geoffrey C. Ward and produced by Sarah Botstein, both longtime collaborators of Burns and Novick — interweaves a close study of the biographical events of the author’s life with excerpts from his fiction, non-fiction and short stories, informed by interviews with celebrated writers, scholars and Hemingway’s son, Patrick. The filmmakers explore the painstaking process through which Hemingway created some of the most important works of fiction.

Narrated by long-time collaborator Peter Coyote, the series features an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced by Jeff Daniels), his friends and family vividly to life. Through letters to and from his four wives — voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary Louise Parker and Patricia Clarkson — the film reveals Hemingway at his most romantic and his most vulnerable, grappling at times with insecurity, anxiety and existential loneliness.

HEMINGWAY BEGINS MONDAY, APRIL 5, AT 9 PM

KSPSStillHardatWorkFortheCommunityA year ago this month it was a different world: we were

preparing for the March pledge drive, doing preliminary work on the 2020-2021 budget, and building on the work of our new Strategic Plan.

I was headed to PBS Headquarters for a system-wide meeting on fundraising programs and initiatives and looking forward to bringing back new ideas to share with our Development team.

Then the world changed…

Programs and plans were put on hold, new ways of working were developed, and team members went from seeing each other every day to seeing each other in Zoom boxes – and rarely in person.

None of this is new – but what is new is how we’ve been able to take this challenge and turn it into an opportunity.

Our Production team produced programs on the impact of the virus in all of the communities we serve – from special editions of Health Matters to bringing in government, medical and law enforcement authorities to answer questions about what was happening and what’s next.

Our Production team and Education Director combined to create a series of student lessons for grades K-6, presented by local teachers. Those daily two-hour blocks helped to keep students enriched and engaged.

The lack of in-person concerts, plays and other performances led to the creation of Inland Sessions – our weekly performing arts program. From our studios, each week we feature artists of all genres, from classical to instrumental to blues to Latin.

In the midst of all of this (as you can tell, our Production team has been busy doing exceptional work – including winning an Emmy) we’ve ramped up Career Explore Northwest – providing a valuable resource for those looking for new jobs or making a change.

The saying, “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” has been our theme this past year. As we all navigate the months ahead, KSPS will continue to be your home for more than quality programming. We’re also a valuable and essential community partner as we all deal with what’s now…and what’s next.
