SFX: Play high-energy music as kids enter.CG: Goal! Theme Slide

OPENERSFX: Play “Time of Our Lives” by Chawki

Host and Small Group Leader enter and start to kick a soccer back and forth, while stretching and warming up. It appears they’re getting ready for something big. Both come to the center of the stage, look at each other, and then look out at the audience.

SFX: “Gooooal!”

Both shout along with the announcer, encouraging the kids to do the same. As the music dies down, both resume their stretches.

HOST: “Welcome to [your environment’s], kids! [SGL’s name] and I are stretching and getting ready for the final week, the final match, the championship game, and I couldn’t be more excit—OWWWWW!

Host, doing a stretch with his arms, has injured his right arm. He falls to one knee, in over-acted pain, and his arm dangles comically.

“Owie, owie, owie, owie!”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Oh, no! What happened?”

HOST: “I think I pulled a muscle or something in my arm! I can’t even lift it! Oh no, what about getting ready for the game? This is terrible!”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Well, hang on a second; I might have a way to help.”

HOST: “You do?”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Yes, there’s a new stretch that counteracts the muscle pull. I read all about this in Soccer Digest. All I have to do is . . .”

SGL gently takes Host’s non-injured arm and bends it slightly. Host reacts as if now that arm is injured as well.

HOST: “OW, OW, OW, OW! You thought that would help?!”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Well, it DID say there might be side effects.”

HOST: “What am I going to do? I have to get ready for the game! (Frantically) I won’t be ready in time. We won’t have enough players. We’ll have to forfeit! We’ll lose the championship! (Suddenly calm) We have to make this work. You don’t use your arms in soccer, right? It’ll totally be fine. Here, I’ll just try to get my lunch ready.

Host tries to get the bread out of the bag and make a sandwich, but his arms are dead. He flops his arms around on the table for a minute before giving up.

“Hopeless! What will I do?”

SGL gets an idea.

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “I might have a way to help.”

HOST: “I’m not sure if I trust you. You might make my legs fall off.”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “You need to get ready for the game, right?”

HOST: “Yes, I do.”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “You can’t use your arms, right?”

HOST: “No, I can’t.”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Then I’ll be your arms for you!”

Host stares blankly.

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Here, just put this apron on. Bring your arms back here . . . and I stick my arms through . . . and voila! Instant arms!”

SGL helps put an apron on Host, then stands behind Host and sticks his arms around and under Host’s armpits, effectively becoming Host’s “arms.” (NOTE: This will probably not go exactly how it’s scripted. Have fun with this and go with whatever happens.)

HOST: “But you won’t get to see anything. How is that okay?”

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Listen, it’ll be fine. I’m putting you first. I want to make sure you’re taken care of.”

SGL then starts poking at Host’s face, scratching his chin, rubbing his cheeks, and so on.

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “Pretend I’m not even here.”

HOST: “This is not going to end well.”

Host and SGL shuffle over to the table where the food and drinks are pre-set. From here, SGL now gestures to everything Host says. Make the gestures over-acted and comical.

HOST: “Okay. Well. Let’s try this again. Ahem. Welcome to [your environment’s name], kids! [SGL’s name] and I are stretching and getting ready for the final week, the final match, the championship game, and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s important to not only stretch before the big game, but to also to stay healthy and stay hydrated! For my lunch, I love a good sandwich, which I am going to try to make right now.

SGL fumbles around with the ingredients, and Host describes what he is trying to do. “I’ll just put a little turkey on there, and lettuce, I like lots of lettuce,” for example. The humor lies in making Host have to bite into something huge and messy.

“Now that my sandwich is made—and SOOO tasty—it’s time to make sure I stay hydrated for the big game. Running on the field can wear you out, so water, Gatorade, anything with good energy and electrolytes will replenish nutrients lost when you sweat! Now I just have to fill up my water bottle.

The comedy continues as SGL tries to fill up the water bottle with the pitcher of water. After trying that, he tries to fill up a cup with Gatorade and make Host drink it. Spills ensue.

“Mmmm. So good before a game. Oh! I almost forgot! I need good energy and lots of potassium, so I like to . . . eat a banana before the big game.”

SGL flails around for the banana, peels it, and then mashes it in Host’s face.

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “How’s it going up there?”

HOST: “I think I’m ready. And these kids I think are ready for some worship! What do you say, kids? Let’s worship!”

Host and SGL exit. On their way off stage, they can help clear the table and tarp to make it safer for the worship team to lead.

WORSHIPWORSHIP LEADER: “Yeah, let’s get on our feet and get ready to give all that we are to the Lord as we worship. Deuteronomy 11:13 encourages us: So be faithful. Obey the commands the Lord your God is giving you today. Love him. Serve him with all your heart and with all your soul (NIrV). Let’s be the generation that praises God with all that we are!

SFX: “Generation for You” / track 5 from Alive

“Yes! Our worship is a gift that we give back to God. He gave us His very best when He gave us His son Jesus. His love for us is great and His grace is amazing. Let’s give Him thanks as we sing.”

Storyteller enters as Worship Leader exits. The Bible story this week is posed in a series of scenarios. The kids will vote by kicking wadded-up paper balls into one of the two goals set up in the room.

SETTING UP THE STORYSTORYTELLER: “Welcome back to the final week of this month! We’ve learned a lot along the way so far, and we’ve also heard some amazing things about Jesus. He died, He rose from the dead, He appeared to His friends behind locked doors, He taught them about their purpose in life, and ultimately He rose from the earth in to the sky! He did all of this because He constantly put others first. Even when He was on the cross He put others first.

(Open Bible.) “Today we head to the Book of Philippians. Actually, it’s not really a book. It’s a letter that one of the first leaders in the church, a guy by the name of Paul, wrote to a church in the city of Philippi. That’s why it’s called Philippians! Anyway, let’s head to Philippians, chapter 2, verses 3-8. This passage contains our memory verse for this month, too, but we’re going to look at a little bit more than just that part of it.

Point out the two goals set up in the room.

“We have two soccer goals set up in the room! It’s interesting that we’re looking at soccer for this month, because compared to some other sports, soccer is one sport where passing the ball, setting up your teammates, and giving up what you want is actually BETTER for the game. You might say that soccer is the ‘humility’ sport! You have to ‘give up’ the ball to someone else so it’s easier to score!”

A DIVINE EXAMPLESTORYTELLER: “It’s sometimes hard to be humble, isn’t it? It’s hard to let someone else do something that YOU want to do. It’s hard to let someone else have something YOU want to have. Thankfully, the Bible sets us straight and gives us help. All we have to do is look to Jesus as an example.

“Here’s what the apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3-8 (read directly from the Bible): Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others. As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did. In his very nature he was God. Jesus was equal with God. But Jesus didn’t take advantage of that fact. Instead, he made himself nothing. He did this by taking on the nature of a servant. He was made just like human beings. He appeared as a man. He was humble and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to his death. Even worse, he died on a cross! (NIrV).

“Let’s take this one piece at a time. And speaking of pieces, everyone needs a piece of paper.

Small Group Leaders and Worship Leaders can help hand out paper to all of the kids—one piece per child.

“Now very carefully, and very gently, WAD UP THAT PAPER INTO A BALL! (Demonstrate.) Fantastic! This is going to be your soccer ball. I’m going to set up a scenario, and you’re going to ‘vote’ by kicking your ball into one of the two soccer goals! But listen: there’s a twist. When you get close enough to the goal to kick it in, you have to PASS your ball to someone else to score! Are you ready?”

KICK IT TO THE LEFT, KICK IT TO THE RIGHTSTORYTELLER: “Let me tell you a story.

“You are on your way to your class at school, and you know there is a test you have to take. In the hallway, you see your teacher. She has a lot of books and papers in her hand. As she struggles to get the door to your class, a paper falls down on the ground. She doesn’t see it. When you pick it up, you realize that it’s all of the questions AND answers to the test you’re about to take! She doesn’t know it fell down, and no one else saw it. It wouldn’t hurt just to take a quick look so you’d know what to expect, right? After all, you studied; you’re just checking to make sure you studied the right things. Plus, if you take it back now, the teacher might think you stole it!

“Kick your ball into the goal on the right if you think you should take a closer look at it.

“Kick your ball into the goal on the left if you think you should just take it back to the teacher.

Allow time for kids to decide and kick the paper. Remind them to pass it when they get close so someone else can score!

Once all of the kicking is finished, pick out a few kids and ask them why they chose a certain side over another. Allow a brief discussion about their answers.

“Philippians 2 starts out by saying: Don’t do anything only to get ahead (v. 3). If you took a closer look at those answers, that would be cheating! You’d only be doing it for yourself and to try to get a better grade. Okay, everyone back into the middle!

“Let me tell you another story. Your dad’s at work and your mom is on a phone call upstairs. You are playing with your brother in the house. Things start off fine, just goofing around, but then things get a little out of control. Long story short, you tried to throw him a long pass with the football in the living room and hit the shelf instead. A picture frame falls and crashes to the ground, shattering the glass. Your mom calls from the other room, ‘What in the world was that?’

“You frantically look around, and then suddenly you realize: the CAT. The cat knocks things over all the time! And the cat is even in the room right now! You could totally blame the cat, and you wouldn’t get in trouble. To make matters worse, you’ve been told probably a million times not to act crazy in the house. You’re going to get in trouble for SURE if you admit it.

“Kick your ball into the goal on the right if you think you should falsely fault the feline. In other words: blame the cat.

“Kick your ball into the goal on the left if you think you should ’fess up and tell the truth.

Allow time for kids to decide and kick the paper. Remind them to pass it when they get close so someone else can score!

Once all of the kicking is finished, pick out a few kids and ask them why they chose a certain side over another. Allow a brief discussion about their answers.

“That’s a little tougher. It’s not a big thing. It’s not like you accidentally drove the car through the garage or hit a golf ball through your neighbor’s window. In Philippians 2, it says: As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did (v. 5). Do you think Jesus would tell the truth? (Pause for response.) Of course. Yes, I’m SURE He would. He probably would’ve made that pass and not hit the shelf, but that’s a different story altogether.

“Let me tell you another story. Your dad is on staff at a church. He’s a great person, and all of the kids think he’s funny and cool. During the week, you get to come in and play with everything on the stage, and you get to see what’s happening behind the scenes.

“There’s a contest that he’s planning on one Sunday morning where the winner might get to win something big, like an Xbox®. You know what the contest is, because you saw him trying it out beforehand, and you know you could TOTALLY win. It’s so easy!

“But on Sunday morning, your dad pulls you aside and tells you that you can’t be picked. Since you’re his child, he doesn’t want it to look like he’s playing favorites, or that you already knew how to win. It wouldn’t be fair to the other kids if you played.

“But what about fair to you? It’s not your fault you’re his kid! And he knows that you’ve wanted an Xbox for, like, your whole life! Like, all eight years of it!

“Kick your ball into the goal on the right if you think you should be fine and let someone else win the contest and get the Xbox.

“Kick your ball into the goal on the left if you think you should be totally mad that you don’t even get a chance to try.

Allow time for kids to decide and kick the paper. Remind them to pass it when they get close so someone else can score!

Once all of the kicking is finished, pick out a few kids and ask them why they chose a certain side over another. Allow a brief discussion about their answers.

“Hard one, right? On one hand, you might feel like you should at least be picked and given a shot. But on the other hand, it might look like your dad IS playing favorites, and the kids might not like him as much. Thankfully, the Bible can help us again. In Philippians 2 it says: Jesus was equal with God. But Jesus didn’t take advantage of that fact. Instead, he made himself nothing (vv. 6-7). Jesus didn’t just use His heavenly Dad to get things He wanted. Instead, He made himself nothing. He put others first—always.”

SCORING THE GOAL—MAKING THE POINTSTORYTELLER: “In each of these stories, you were given a choice. Some may have seemed pretty obvious which one to pick, but others might not have been so easy. And listen, as you grow up, you’re going to be faced with lots of choices like these.

“You find your sister’s diary by accident while looking for a pencil in a drawer. Do you read it?

“You’re playing at recess, and while watching a game, you see someone cheat and then lie about it. Do you say something?

“All of these questions and all of these choices that you’re facing don’t have to be so hard to choose. If you simply put others first and stop thinking of yourself, you will discover EXACTLY what Jesus would do.

“Jesus became a servant. He was a person, just like you and me. Same temptations, same choices, same decisions. And you know what He did? He was humble and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to His death.

“Let me give you one last choice, and I think you know what the right answer will be:

“Kick your ball into the goal on the right if you think you should put others first.

“Kick your ball into the goal on the left if you think you should take what you deserve.

Allow time for kids to decide and kick the paper. Remind them to pass it when they get close so someone else can score!

Once all of the kicking is finished, pick out a few kids and ask them why they chose a certain side over another. Allow a brief discussion about their answers.

“Excellent choice. And if we keep in mind what Jesus thought and did, we’ll put others first every single time!”

WRAPPING UP THE STORYSTORYTELLER: “The truth is, it’s always tempting to think about yourself first. I mean, that’s our default setting! But as we heard, the Apostle Paul has something to say about that: Don’t do anything only to get ahead. . . . You should think and act as Jesus did (Philippians 2:3, 5 NIrV). So how did Jesus treat people? He listened to them. He served them by giving them food to eat and by praying for them and calming their fears. Over and over, He pointed them to God.

[Bottom Line] “Put others first. Short, sweet, and to the point. Let’s say it together.

STORYTELLER AND KIDS: [Bottom Line] “Put others first.”

STORYTELLER: “Get yourself out of the way and let others take the lead. Give up what you want and hand it over to someone else. It’s hard, believe me, but I know with God’s help we can do it! Let’s pray.”

PRAYSTORYTELLER: “Lord, it’s hard to stay humble and put others first. But even so, please help us remember to do it. Help us to remember what Jesus thought and did. When we’re given a choice, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would remind us of the right thing to do—the ‘Jesus’ thing to do—and that You’d give us the boldness to make a good choice. Thank You for Your Word and how it always teaches us. We love You and we pray these things in Jesus’ name, amen.”

Storyteller exits as Host enters.

CLOSERHOST: “What a fantastic way to close out this month and this Life App of humility. [Bottom Line] Put others first. Right to the point. It’s what Jesus did, after all, right? So, really, how did Jesus treat people? He listened to them. How did He serve them? He served them by giving them food to eat and praying for them and calming their fears. How did He act? Over and over, He pointed them to God.

“You can follow Jesus’ example in your own life in big and small ways, too. Choose to listen to your little brother instead of brushing him off. If your friend is scared of thunder, don’t laugh—give her a big hug and share a funny story. Find ways with your family to help people who don’t have homes or enough food to eat. When you keep your eyes open, you’ll find so many ways to put someone else ahead of yourself.

“That’s why this is the most important thing to remember today: [Bottom Line] Put others first.

CG: Memory Verse Slide

“We’ve broken down our memory verse for this month, so let’s read it one last time. Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves, Philippians 2:3 (NIrV).

“And an easy way to remember is to think about soccer! You can’t do it all on your own. Give up what you want—the ball—and put others first to score the winning goal! You remember to put others first, and you just might hear God say . . .

SFX: “Gooooal!”

“Let’s head to our small groups! See you next week, everyone!”

Dismiss children to their small groups.

SFX: Play high-energy music as the kids exit.
