The breed was officially renamed by the UK Kennel Club, a name which was also adopted by many other international kennel clubs. Eventually, the appendage "wolf dog" was dropped. The name remained for five decades, until 1977, when successful campaigns by dog enthusiasts pressured the British kennel clubs to allow the breed to be registered again as _______.

• A X is a phrase or platitude that, having been employed excessively, suggests insincerity or a lack of originality in the speaker employing it.

• The term "X" derives from the antiquated use of certain X salts in medicine as mild tranquilizers and sedatives. Administration of a "X" (such as the original Bromo-Seltzer prior to 1975 in the U.S.) would relieve anxiety and make the patient drowsy. Describing a phrase as a "X" is meant humorously to imply that it is a verbal sedative; a boring statement with similar soporific properties.

14• Some theories regarding the origins of X (of varying veracity) :• A symbol virtually identical to X has been used as an alchemic

sigil for cinnabar dating at least as far back as the early eighteenth century.

• A X with two vertical lines could have started off as a monogram of 'US', used on money bags issued by the United States Mint.

• Another theory is that X may have also originated from Hermes, the Greek god of bankers, thieves, messengers, and tricksters: One of his symbols was the caduceus, a staff from which ribbons or snakes dangled in a sinuous curve.

• Derived from a slash through the numeral eight, denoting pieces of eight.

• A/an X, dolt, or dullard is a mentally deficient person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way. Archaically the word mome has also been used. The similar terms moron, imbecile, and cretin have all gained specialized meanings in modern times. A dunce is a/an X who is specifically incapable of learning. A/an X differs from a fool (who is unwise) and an ignoramus (who is uneducated/an ignorant), neither of which refers to someone with low intelligence.

• A summary of X's special qualities:• With X, Y would be able to strike as firmly as

he wanted, whatever his aim, and X would never fail, and if he threw it at something, it would never miss and never fly so far from his hand that it would not find its way back, and when he wanted, it would be so small that it could be carried inside his tunic.

17• 'Ils ne passeront pas/On ne passe pas' is a slogan used to express

determination to defend a position against an enemy.• It was most famously used during the Battle of Verdun in World War I

by French General Robert Nivelle. It appears on propaganda posters, such as that by Maurice Neumont after the Second Battle of the Marne, which was later adopted on uniform badges by units manning the Maginot Line.

18The Bone Wars, also known as the "Great Dinosaur Rush", refers to a period of intense fossil speculation and discovery during the Gilded Age of American history, marked by a heated rivalry between Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. In 1877 Marsh wrote a short two-paragraph article for the American Journal of Science that didn't have illustrations and included only a description of the animal's vertebral column. Marsh named the creature ________, meaning "deceptive lizard". In that same year, in another short article in the same journal, Marsh claimed finding another dinosaur based on a description of the pelvis and vertebrae. He named this one X.The X soon went on to become one of the most famous dinosaur species of all time. A nearly complete skeleton found by Marsh was mounted in Yale's Peabody Museum. There it captured the public's imagination as did a beautiful illustration Marsh published in US Geological Survey, 1895.In his rush to beat Cope, Marsh had made a mistake, however. The _______ was not a separate species, but simply a juvenile example of X. In 1903 Elmer Riggs of the Field Museum in Chicago was studying Marsh's work when he found this mistake:X?
