TheSMP120convertersareswitchingregulatorswhichuseacurrentmodecontrolsingleswitchforwarddesignwithanominalswitchingfrequencyof500kHz.Closeregulationismaintainedwithadvancedconstantfrequencypulsewidthmodulationdesigntechniques.TheSMP120’scurrentmodecontroltopologyprovideshighlevelsofinput-to-outputripplerejection.

TheSMP120convertershaveanundervoltagelockout(uVLO)circuitthatwillholdtheconverteroffuntiltheinputvoltagerisestoapproximately75voltsatwhichpointpowerconversionwillbegin.Whentheinputvoltagefallstoapproximately72volts,theconverterwillpoweroff.Whentheinputvoltageisbetween72and75volts,theoutputvoltagemaynotmeetnominalvoltageregulationspecifications.oUtpUt oVeRVoltage pRotectionTheSMP120overvoltageprotectioncircuitcomprisesaredundantreferencevoltageandcomparatortodetectwhentheoutputvoltageexceedsapproximately130%ofthenominaloutputvoltage.Whenanoutputovervoltageconditionisdetected,theprotectioncircuitforcestheconvertertoshutdownforafewmillisecondsandinitiatearestart.Iftheovervoltageconditionpersists,theprotectioncircuitwillrepeattheshutdown/restartcycleuntiltheovervoltageconditiongoesawayortheconverterisinhibitedexternally.
Whenusingthetrimfunction,themarginbetweenthetrimmedvoltageandtheovervoltagethresholdwillbereducedsincetheovervoltagethresholdisfixedat130%ofthenominaloutputvoltage.
inRUSH cURRent limiteRTheSMP120inrushcurrentlimitercomprisesanN-ChannelMOSFETasasimpletimer.Whentheinhibitpinisreleased,ahighvoltagecurrentsourcechargesacapacitorthatisconnectedbetweenthegateandsourceofthecurrentlimiterFET.Thiscausesthegatevoltagetoriseataratedeterminedbythecurrentandcapacitor.WhenthegatevoltageapproachestheFETthresholdvoltage,theFETstartstoconduct.Initially,theFETappearsasalargeresistanceinserieswiththeinternalcapacitanceoftheconverterallowingthecapacitancetochargeslowlyandlimitingtheinrushcurrentatstartup.Asthegatevoltageincreases,theresistanceofthecurrentlimiterFETdecreasesuntiltheFETisfullyontherebyminimizingthepowerlossduetothecurrentlimitcircuit.
SenSe on 5 Volt Single oUtpUtTightloadregulationismaintainedviaawidebandwidthmagneticfeedbackandthroughtheuseofremotesenseonthe5voltsingleoutputmodels.Thesensepinfunctionallowsaremoteconnectionforthevoltageregulationcircuittocompensateforvoltagedropsbetweentheconverterandthepointofuse.upto500mVisallowedbetweenthepositivesenseandthepositiveoutputandbetweenthesensereturnandoutputreturn.
Notethatifthesensepinsareconnectedbuttheoutputvoltagepinsarenot,theconvertermaybedamaged.
CAuTION:Theconverterwillbepermanentlydamagedifthepositivesense(pin10)isshortedtoground.Damagemayalsoresultiftheoutputcommonorpositiveoutputisdisconnectedfromtheloadwhentheremotesenseleadsareconnectedtotheload.

Whenpullingmultipleinhibitsignalslow,aseparateinterfaceisrecommendedforeachSMP120.TheconverterisinhibitedwhentheInhibitpinispulledlow(<1.0V).Intheinhibitmodetheinhibitpincurrentrequirementislessthan~500µA.TheconverterresumesnormaloperationwhenanopencircuitisappliedtotheInhibitpinortheInhibitpinisreleased.TheopencircuitvoltageoftheInhibitpinis10to13.6volts.

SeqUencingTheSMP120convertersarewellsuitedforprovidinganintermediatebusvoltagetopowerlowvoltageDC-DCconvertersandPointofLoad(POL)converters.Inordertoensurepredictablestartupandturnoffbehavior,propersequencingoftheSMP120andassociatedloadishighlyrecommended.Thetimingdiagram,Figure4,showsatypicalsequenceoftheapplication/removalofpowerandenabling/inhibitingoftheSMP120andload.
Ideally,theSMP120isenabledaftertheinputpowerhasstabilized.OncetheSMP120outputvoltagehasstabilized,thePOLmaybeenabled.Duringturnoff,thesequenceisreversedwithoneexception,theSMP120andPOLmaybeinhibitedsimultaneously,thentheinputpowermayberemoved.AdheringtothissequencingprotocolwillensurethattheSMP120andPOLwillpowerupanddowninapredictablemanner.Table1belowdescribesthetiminginmoredetail.
