Jesus urges everyone to draw near to him – “Come to me!” – and he promises them comfort and repose. “When Jesus says this, he has before him the people he meets every day on the streets of Galilee: very many people, the poor, the sick, sinners, those who are marginalized by the burden of the law and the oppressive social system... On this XXVIII World Day of the Sick, Jesus repeats these words to the sick, the oppressed, and the poor. For they realize that they depend entirely on God and, beneath the burden of their trials, stand in need of his healing. Jesus does not make demands of those who endure situations of frailty, suffering and weakness, but offers his mercy and his comforting presence. He looks upon a wounded humanity with eyes that gaze into the heart of each person. That gaze is not one of indifference; rather, it embraces people in their entirety, each person in his or her health condition, discarding no one, but rather inviting everyone to share in his life and to experience his tender love. MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE XXVIII WORLD DAY OF THE SICK 2020

11 February 2020

Dear brothers and sisters Jesus’ words, “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28) point to the mysterious path of grace that is revealed to the all and gives new strength to those who are weary and tired. These words of Christ express the solidarity of the Son of Man with all those who are hurt and afflicted. How many people suffer in both body and soul! Grace before meals with lines inspired by the Readings for February 9

Leader: Lord Jesus, we thank you for your Word. You call your followers

the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14)

All: Lord, enlighten our minds with wisdom from heaven .

Together: “Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from

Thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen”

After the meal: “We give you thanks, Almighty God, for all your gifts, who live

and reign now and forever. Amen

Thank you!! The Blackburn family would like to thank the ladies of the CWL for

all of their prayers, care packages and acts of love during a very difficult time for the family

over the winter months. The April 2nd Mass is being offered for them.

The Blackburn family is looking to hire a nanny to look after two energetic boys (2yrs and

4yrs) two-three days a week (Monday, possibly Wednesday, and Friday) from 7:30am to

4:00pm. The eldest boy would need to be dropped off and picked up from pre-school, so the

successful applicant would need a valid driver’s license and a vehicle. Pay is negotiable.

Hoping to have a nanny in place by February 24th.

Please call (780) 989-5264 if you’re interested.

The Archdiocese has now received multiple reports of email scammers targeting our parishioners once again. These emails look like they come from a pastor, because the scammers have created fake Gmail accounts in the pastor's name.

Typically, the subject line is something like ‘Many Blessings’ and they ask the recipient to purchase gift cards for someone in need. Please know that that our priests NEVER email their parishioners to ask for money or gift cards out of the blue. If you receive such an email, we encourage you to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or at 1-888-495-8501. A reminder that we ask everyone to limit their visiting before mass to the parish hall. When we arrive for mass we like to sit and prepare ourselves quietly for the Liturgy and the Eucharist. Some of us read our missals, others sit and pray. By stopping to chat it disrupts our thoughts and disturbs our preparations. Please respect everyone’s private time before mass.

A reminder that arriving late for mass is another disruption to our fellow pa-rishioners. Please make arriving on time a priority. Jesus has invited us to be his guest at his Eucharistic celebration. Please give Him the same curtesy as you do you family and friends when you are invited to their homes for dinner. AND always stay for the final blessing. Leaving right after communion is like your guests leaving after your dinner before dessert is served.

GOSPEL REFLECTIONS Following upon the teaching of the Beatitudes, Jesus uses the now familiar metaphors of salt and light to describe the life of discipleship. We take salt and light for granted in our society, but these commodities were more precious in ancient cultures. Just as now, salt was used in Jesus’ time for flavoring, as a preservative, and as a healing agent. Similarly, the widespread use of electricity in the modern world makes us less aware of the value and importance of light in our lives.

Still, our familiarity with this passage from Matthew’s Gospel speaks well to the abiding power of the imagery that Jesus presented. Jesus’ call to be salt for the earth and light for the world powerfully states our mission as Church and as Christians. Our commitment to social justice flows from the exhortation that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel. Some of the activities that this commitment leads us to are given more concrete expression as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, console those who mourn, and so on, we show ourselves to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. When we do these things with the community of faith, the Church, we are indeed acting as “a city set on a mountain” that cannot be hidden!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy”
