Preemie Press Spring 2015 -...

Spring is in the air! And with the warmer temperatures comes a variety of ways to engage in your local chapter of DVANN. We started 2015 off with a successful social event at All Fired Up. With the aid of some wine and snacks, we got our creative juices flowing and created some paint- your-own pottery masterpieces! Don’t worry if you missed this one; we’re planning more social events in the coming months. Meet someone new, do something you’ve never done, and have more fun! The turnout for our first dinner meeting of the year was incredible! Nearly 60 of you were present to learn about Cleft Care Across the Ages and sample wine selected by our resident Sommelier and Past-President, Taryn Edwards. We’re looking forward to our upcoming PPS Dinner in April where we’ll investigate the topic of Paternal Stress in the NICU. The Board is hard at work creating diverse and enriching experiences for you over the coming year. One of our targeted goals is to enhance our philanthropic contribution, not just through financial means, but through giving of our time and talents. We’ll be bringing service opportunities your way, so please consider donating a small amount of your time to help others in the community. Please take a look at our calendar of events! We hope to see you at a DVANN event in the near future 1 Preemie Press Volume 23, Issue 1 Spring 2015 A Message from the President Beth Bradley, MSN, RNC-NIC

Membership Update

Currently DVANN consists of 282 members. Our representation at NANN is significant and our voices have power to promote excellence in neonatal nursing. DVANN hosts a variety of functions and DVANN membership gives you members-only access. 13 DVANN members attended the All Fired Up social on February 26th. Please take advantage of these nursing opportunities to learn, communicate, make changes, network, and socialize with your colleagues. Visit the DVANN website for the most current events. I hope to meet each of you personally over the next year. Thank you for joining our DVANN community!

Sincerely, Sue Williams

Advocacy Update Nurses took action and as we go to press, I am encouraged that H.R.2 was passed by the House of Representatives. If passed by the Senate, this bill reauthorizes and extends the CHIP program for two more years. Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers more than 8 million children and pregnant women whose income is above the Medicaid eligibility levels. This bill will also grant prescriptive powers to APRN’s and PA’s beyond what they are allowed to do now. It will also provide an extension for funding community health centers, and other centers like it. It also creates an incentive based reimbursement payment system based on quality care, efficiency, innovation and positive outcomes. There are more issues addressed here that improve and address quality health care for Americans. Thank you to those who answered the call to action that DVANN sent out last week. Please look for a communication from me and then act on it when we need to encourage our Senators to pass this bill. There is an upcoming Pennsylvania Legislative Day on April 20th in Harrisburg. This is open to everyone and if you are a PSNA member, it is free. If not, it is a $20.00 fee. This day is from 8:30-3:30. This is an opportunity to interact with health care experts, meet with legislators if you wish to do so and hear the Keynote Speaker. This year, the speaker is Rebecca Patton MSN, RN, FAAN. She is the former ANA President. She will speak on her topic as co-author of Nurses Making Policy: From Bedside to Boardroom. CE’s will be provided. I will be attending. Both NANN and the ANA are closely monitoring many health care issues before Congess and will alert us when it is time to act. For now, I encourage all of us to think and act responsibly by paying attention to local and statewide issues impacting the environment. Our children and vulnerable neonates are being exposed to many chemicals, pollutants, and plant based endocrine disruptors every day. This is a great time to learn more about these health deterrents. When you read about something that concerns you, contact your legislators. Go directly to their websites, tell them you are a nurse expert and have grave concerns. Ask them if they have a position on it. Enlighten them about what you already know. Tell your story as a neonatal nurse and the negative impact an unhealthy environment will have on these little ones. They really do want to hear from us. For those nurses living in NJ and DE. I have been looking at your state government websites. I have not yet seen a legislative action day for these states. If I see anything, I will communicate the information to you. Respectfully, Tommie Farrell
