REGIONAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE By Richard Schauer

AUGUST 21 IS NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY AS PROLCAIMED BY PRESIDENT REAGAN

The summer of ’19 is in full swing! In June we scored a huge success with Escondido’s Cruisin’ Grand. The July tour to Casa Romantica was a first: the first combined tour with the Earl C Anthony region in L.A. Forty people attended, and over a dozen Packards, including the stunning 1935 Phaeton by Dietrich owned by Earl

Rubenstein. Casa Romantica was overwhelmed by our turnout, and forwarded a heartfelt thank you to us all for selecting their historic site for our tour. I thank my wife Karen for picking up the ball and acting as Tour Director for this event in my absence.

August 4 is our annual membership social in Point Loma. Each year this event grows in popularity, and is FREE. Please come and drive your Packard! It will be safe parked alongside Tim’s house. A little surprise may be in store for those who come (teaser is intentional). In September, two events are in the works: one with the Mercedes-Benz Club and the other in Carlsbad, at the Museum of Making Music, both truly unique events. Then there is Idyllwild in October. The June 30 deadline for reserving a room at the Bluebird is past, but there may still be a room available.

August is here, and that means nominations for our annual election is upon us. According to our bylaws, positions are elected for a two year term. In odd years, we elect the Regional Director and Treasurer. This year, Karl Ramsing will chair the nominating committee. We can be proud of the fact that our region is very active in terms of member participation. Come be a part of the action. Volunteer for a committee position. We work hard, but we have a great time doing it. There is always room for “new blood” on our board.

Casa Romantica Hacienda Tour By Steve Ross

Gosh Darn it all! Some of you missed out again. This here Hacienda was something else. It brings home the history of what California was like prior to WWII. I am sure you have Googled this place and know all about it. (Off topic, but Google makes me wonder-is everything on Google and Wikipedia correct? I choose to believe so.)

The San Clemente Times wrote an article on our visit and it appears below

Casa Romantica docents Sandy Wheeler and Lou Leto pose with Earl Rubenstein, the proud owner of an elegant 1935 Packard Dual Cowl convertible as part of a Packard Club of San Diego parade that began at Casa and drove through San Clemente on Saturday, July 13. Photo by Lou Leto.

Members of Packard Club of San Diego lined the parking lot of Casa Romantica with nearly two dozen classic Packard automobiles from the 1930s through the 1950s on Saturday, July 13.

Local resident Bill Maya offered his multi-award-winning 1956 Packard Caribbean convertible as the “greeter” for the Packard guests.

The group of nearly 40 were entertained with a tour of the historic home by volunteer docents Sandy Wheeler and Lou Leto before departing on a driving tour around San Clemente.

With 70 members and more than 100 Packards, the Packard Club of San Diego is on the road at least once a month, showing offer their restored motorcars to the public in caravans, car shows, and parades in and around San Diego County.

Earning nicknames such as “The Soft Spoken Boss of the Road” and the “America’s Rolls Royce,” Packard was an American luxury car brand built by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit. The first Packards were produced in 1899, and the last Detroit-built Packard came out in 1956.

THE PACKARD CLUB OF SAN DIEGO TOUR BEGINS

The journey began with a gathering of Packards at the Park and Ride in Vista, CA. Buttercup wanted to go but was not up to the trip, maybe next time.

On the road with Packards. Is this a sight to behold or what?? A 1934 Packard Roadster followed by a 1935 Twelve Limo, overtaking a Mercedes-Benz CLS550. The Mercedes Benz felt honored.

But Wait! there’s more, looks like a 1941 120 followed by a 1949 Limo. I know it’s hard to tell in this photo, but I know.

It was difficult but a pleasure to take photos of Packards on the road where they should be. This is where these ladies belong, on the highway showing

their front, rear and flowing lines and most importantly that sensual PURR of one of the best automobile engines ever made. You just cannot get that from visiting the exquisite museum collections, the trailer queens that have been in a collection for decades, etc. Those grand ladies have not seen the runway in like forever. It is not difficult to get all the photos of a Packard you want. Heck you can go to just about any car show and can’t throw a cat without hitting a Packard. But try and get pictures of one on the road. Now think of TWO on the road, well I got FIVE! When this many Packards or any other significant brand are on the road, one usually gets high fives or a toot-toot on the klaxon, but not this time. We were rolling an honest 55 mph down the far right lane of I-5 when I heard the emergency blaring of a horn. About this time a dark colored, big block something or other roared past. The driver was from the less mature generation. Guess you had to be there, no pun intended.

Arriving at the Casa we were joined by the Packards of the Earl C. Anthony Region

Ten Packards from our region were in attendance and nearly 40 people by my count. Three Packards and thirteen members from the Earl C. Anthony joined us. They are really nice folks, just as all of us Packard people are, and it was a lot of fun to have an event with another region.

A modified Packard pickup, the official Packard of the region, owned by Mark Rojas and Peter Kahn's 1936 Packard

Peter Kahn's 1936, the Rojas Pickup, and ECA Regional Director Andrew Wallace's 1952 Packard

Earl Rubenstein's 1935 Dual Cowl Phaeton and a 1956 Caribbean Convertible greeted the visitors at the casa entrance

San Clemente was founded by Ole Hanson, a child of Norwegian emigrants, and he built the Casa Romantica for his family home. The following is a quote from Wikipedia: “Ole Hanson, a real estate developer and one-time mayor of Seattle, visited San Clemente in the early 1920s and chose the site to create his ideal community, a "Spanish Village by the Sea." On December 6, 1925, Hanson persuaded people who had driven from Los Angeles and the surrounding areas for a free chicken dinner and a sales pitch to buy more than 300 lots in what then was a desolate landscape remote from the rest of southern California". I guess I am way behind times with my chicken dinner idea. It worked for Ole!

Our docents gave us the history and stories about the Casa and the Hanson family of which there were nine children. The tile was made on site and is still in service today and looks extremely nice after over ninety years of use. The grounds and the casa were very appealing to the eye. I have lived here since the 60’s and I never heard of Casa Romantica until a few months ago. It makes me wonder how many other places in my backyard I don't know about. Ole also built President Nixon's former digs in San Clemente, and is practically right next door.

Brian Wagner, Past President Steve Ross and Peter Kahn keeping the bench warm waiting for lunch. Peter is talking to us about renewing his membership for more than one year, which we did.

From the back terrace, our docent points in the direction of the former Nixon home. Photos do not do the landscaping justice.

The interior of the casa is exquisite without appearing delicate as the architecture is early Spanish. All of the tile and stonework was performed on site.

Of course there was a gift shop at the Casa and Jim Woolsey scored on a plant for the garage.

The Sundried Tomato American Bistro in San Juan Capistrano was the site for the hungry Packard folks to get food and drink. Not all of the gang joined us for lunch. The food was excellent and I would go back.

Lynn and Rick Carlson join Brian Wagner for lunch.

Carol Ross and Catherine Woolsey found something interesting, but Jim looks away.

Karl and Peggy with their granddaughter Charis, who is visiting from Maryland

Wrapping up the day, a couple of Packards head for the barn to prepare for the next exciting drive on our American Highways and By-Ways.

If you have a Packard or other vintage automobile, consider joining us for our next drive when we chase the rainbow.

I was in Detroit, Michigan last week and at the Ford Greenfield Village people were paying to take a ride in a Model-T. The line was about fifty yards long to take a ride. Wonder what they would pay to ride in a Packard?

ANOTHER FIRST

The first death by motoring happened on August 17, 1896, at the Crystal Palace, London, when Bridget Driscoll of Croydon was run over and her skull fractured by the wheel of the offending car. The driver (Arthur Edsell) was employed to give joy rides in a Rogers-Benz on the terrace of the Crystal Palace. Driscoll was crossing the road when she saw the automobile hurtling toward her at the speed of 4 mph. She took fright and stood still in the path of the oncoming car. The death was ruled accidental.

How ironic that it was a Benz that ran over her.

OUR PACKARD WORLD By Steve Ross

Wyatt Earp posing with a 1926 Packard 326 Opera Coupe. This Packard is thought to belong to silent film star William S. Hart. Wyatt supposedly said, "I wish I had had one of these instead of a horse". Wyatt was a consultant for the Hollywood folks and was also a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. His niece is buried in the Valley Center, CA (San Diego) Cemetery.

LINCOLN HIGHWAY JOURNEY AUGUST 31 -SEPTEMBER 16

By Steve Ross

On August 31, 2019, Carol and I depart Washington, D.C. with the Lincoln Highway Association tour commemorating the one-hundredth anniversary of Col. Eisenhower's Army convoy from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, CA on the old Lincoln Highway. This is a sixteen-day journey and will cover approximately 3,250 miles.

When Ike did it, the convoy departed DC on August 25, 1919, and took over four months to complete the trip. The total actual driving time was 573.5 Hours, with an average speed of 5.67mph. Just a bit faster than a man walks. The remaining time was spent building bridges, 88 of them, repairing road, broken vehicles, tending to injured men, etc. There were several Packard trucks in the convoy

Jay Johnson, a member of our region, will also be on the tour. In case you may be wondering, Buttercup will not be making this journey. She says she is just too old for this s--t and so echoes the driver. He likes air conditioning, cup holders and all that stuff. We will be making the trek in a 1987 Mercedes-Benz Diesel.

This photo was taken by my sister Marilyn, the navigator, in 2013 while driving the Packard in Nevada on the Lincoln Highway old Pony Express Trail . Dust is being kicked up by two Packards in front of me. One being Elvira.

Carol and I have signed on to take the Nevada Pony Express Trail

WIN A CHICKEN DINNER WINNER

We Have a Chicken Dinner Winner: Mr. Mike Adams!

Information on the Daimler provided by Gene Jurick, National President of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America

This issue’s mystery car looks like a Daimler Dart, also known in the U.S. as an SP250 due to a little scuffle with Chrysler over the name. The SP250 was introduced at the NY Auto Show in 1959. Jaguar purchased Daimler in 1960 and continued to build the car for five more years. A total of 2654 Daimler Dart/SP250 were built. The folks that think they know say there are about 532 still kicking around. A nice one should bring about $40,000.

Be the first on your block to win that chicken dinner by sending Steve the make and year of this car.

**CHICKEN DINNER RULES. CONTESTANTS MAY ONLY WIN 2 CHICKEN DINNERS PER CALENDAR YEAR

Even if you have won your allotted limit, please guess anyway and if you’re correct, the editor will buy you a big orange drink at our next event.

This was an American-made automobile that was relatively popular and enjoyed a good reputation while it was in production. It copied a part of its design from another automobile maker.

I think I am making this contest too easy. I am getting correct answers within hours of publication!

This is a Daimler 250. The 250 was conceived by a BSA motorcycle company concept based on the frame of a Triumph TR-3, which tended to flex and the doors flew open. BSA sold it for a song to Daimler, which was being taken over by Jaguar. Body was redesigned and debuted at the NY auto show in 1959 where it was unofficially voted the ugliest car there. The 250 got off to a bad start and never seemed to recover, although performance was competitive.

The engine was in running condition when it was removed from the car. It developed a knock which is probably a loose connecting rod. The engine has well under 10K miles on it since being overhauled about 4 years ago. The cylinder head was resurfaced and the cylinders were bored. Then, all new valves & guides and new pistons & rings were installed. The engine rebuild work was performed by Kenyon Machine Shop. The flywheel was resurfaced, and a new clutch & pressure plate and a new throw out bearing were also installed.

These parts are located in San Diego, CA. Best reasonable offer.

Webmaster’s Cornerby Mark Burnside

Have you ever checked out the website of our parent club at PackardClub.org? If your answer is no, you are missing out on a great perk of being part of PAC. In comparison to the website of our former national club, the PAC website offers the Packard enthusiast a wealth of Packard related information. Here’s a sampling of what is available on the site:

Online PAC National Membership Roster (new): You can search for PAC members in your current area or look for members in other places you may be visiting. Login and find yourself. Check to make sure your listing is correct. If you can’t find it, you’ll need to visit this link right away: Membership (Note that membership in the National Packard Club is required in order to be a member of Packards of San Diego.)

Packard Classifieds: Buy the car of your dreams or sell the one you currently own. Or just drool.

Online Store: Catalogues, books, shop manuals, DVDs, join or renew in PAC, and more. Just about anything you could ever need for your Packarding experience.

Packard Forums: On-line discussion groups where you can receive help resolving a problem with your Packard, or just browse to gain information.

Calendar of Events: Our own website calendar keeps up with National and regional events, but the PAC Calendar lists PAC events worldwide.

Packard Club Videos: Some fascinating clips of our antique cars in motion.

Directory of Regions: See what other regions around the world are planning. Does San Diego region measure up to your expectations?

One of my favorites is a pictorial list of Packard Dealer Showrooms around the country. For a time, some beautiful old buildings housed some beautiful automobiles.

Sam Judd found the Predictor concept car hidden in plain sight in the July issue. It was on page 6: a tail view of the car parked on S. Broadway during our June Cruisin’ Grand event.(see photo, left. An enlargement of the car issuspended in the sky with an arrow pointing to iton the ground.) We have to admit, we receivedsome wild guesses this month, including someone who claimed it was on top of an E-Z up tent!

Will anyone find the Predictor concept car hidden in plain sight in the August issue? For those of you new to this game, the object is to find the Predictor concept car which has been carefully placed somewhere in the newsletter. If you find it – or even if you think it might be the Predictor - email me with the details. If you’re the first person to guess correctly, you win a prize!

SOMEONE HAD TO BE THE FIRST (Part 2) By Steve Ross

Ohio City, Ohio claims the first accident involving a gasoline-powered auto, a little closer to what most of us think of as a car today. In 1891, engineer James Lambert was driving one of his inventions, an early gasoline-powered buggy, when he ran into a little trouble. The buggy, also carrying passenger James Swoveland, hit a tree root sticking out of the ground. Lambert lost control and the vehicle swerved and crashed into a hitching post. Both men suffered minor injuries.

The Buckeye gasoline buggy or Lambert gasoline buggy was the first practical gasoline automobile available for sale in America, according to automobile historians. This would be well ahead of Ford and the Duryea brothers. Lambert had his car on the market in 1891. According to the brochures the price as $550.00. There is no record of how many he built but he did not sell a single car and went out of the automobile business in 1891. I doubt if the wreck was good for business. This passenger was in all likelihood, a potential buyer.
