(Mark 14-16)

Jesus’ Final Steps

A mind boggling prediction (vv. 27-31)

A soul wrenching prayer (vv. 32-42)

A heartbreaking betrayal (vv. 43-52)


Mark 14:26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Mark 14:27-28 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”

Mark 14:29 Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” Mark 14:30 And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

Mark 14:31 But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

Jesus’ Final Steps




Mark 14:32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”


Mark 14:33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”


Mark 14:34-41a


Mark 14:36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”


Note several things about this prayer:

- Jesus addresses God as “Abba”

- He acknowledges that God as God is able to do anything that he desires to do

- Jesus asks that the cup he is about to drink be removed

Jesus saw all the brutality of a thousand ‘Killing Fields’ – all the whoring of earthly civilizations – blasphemy and profanity – a cup brimming with jealousy, hatred, covetousness – which he MUST

DRINK! And Jesus recoiled.”


“Second, he saw that it was a cup full of wrath. As sin-bearer, he became the object

of the Father’s holy wrath against sin. The drinking made Jesus a curse. Galatians 3:13 states that “Christ redeemed us from the

curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written ‘Cursed is everyone who is

hung on a tree.’” Gazing into the cup, Jesus saw Hell opened for him, and he staggered at

the thought!” (R. Kent Hughes)


Jesus was looking at drinking a cup filled to overflowing with

man’s sin and

God’s wrath!


“Daddy, if there is any other way to fulfill your plan . . . make it so and let

me out of this!”

“Yet not what I will, but what you will.”


Mark 14:38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.


Mark 14:41-42 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”


Mark 14:43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.


Mark 14:44-45 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.

“to kiss fervently, to kiss affectionately”


Mark 14:46-47 And they laid hands on him and seized him. But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.


Mark 14:48-49 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”


Mark 14:50-52 And they all left him and fled. And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Today’s Takeaway

Jesus Christ in his suffering endured far more than we could ever imagine.

Mark 14:33 “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death.”

Today’s Takeaway

Jesus Christ in his suffering endured far more than we could ever imagine.

Yet he endured willingly the suffering before him. He faced it with a calmness of

spirit that is unbelievable!

How was he able to do so?

He was able to do so for this reason: his highest value in life was to do the will of

His Father!

“Not my will but YOURS be done!”

John 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

John 6:38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

Today’s Takeaway

Is your greatest value in life to do the will of your Father in heaven, no matter what it

might cost you?

There is no higher calling in this life than to be called to do the will of the God who made us, the God who saves us, and the God who

keeps us in this life and the life to come!

Are you ready to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and say,

“Your will, not mine, be done!”
