Rationale:
The Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) is the ticket of a graduate nurse to the
promising professional nursing career. The examinations will gauge the novice nurse onthe eleven nursing core competencies in different conditions across the lifespan. The
novice nurse is an entry-level generalist nurse.
This action research is undertaken to predict the success rate of a graduate nurse
in passing the NLE in reference to his/her IQ and performances in the BSN program.

1. Trending Average and Rate
Raw scores from drills with UP Enhancement, the Computer Adapted Test (CAT) and the Preboard
are monitored across time in the second semester
For a total of eleven (11) subjects and concept areas including the comprehensive CAT and
preboard, to wit: Funda, Repro, CD, Maternity, Pedia, CHN, Neuro, Metabolism, Fluids/Electrolyte,Psych, CAT, NP1, NP2, NP3, NP4 and NP5.
Trending was done with Mintab15.

Conclusions:
1. IQ Ranking
Class Mean is 3.3.
Successful graduates have an IQ on and above the Class Mean.
Graduates who failed in the one or on the two successive NLEs have
IQs below the Class Mean.
2. Academic Performance GPA
Class mean is 2.08. Successful graduates have GPA on or better than the Class Mean.
Graduates who failed in the one or on the two successive NLEs have
GPSs below the Class Mean.
3. Trending Average Ranking (TAR)
Class mean is 2.4
Successful graduates have Trending Average Rankings better than
the Class Mean.
Graduates who failed in one or two successive NLEs have TARs
below the Class Mean.
4. Trending Rate Ranking (TRR)
Class mean is 2.8
Successful graduates have TRRs almost equal or worse than the
Class Mean.
Graduates who failed in one or two successive NLEs have TRRs
above the Class Mean.
5. Preboard Ratings
Class mean is 47.
Successful graduates have PreBoard Ratings of equal or higher than
the Class Mean.
Graduates who failed in one or two successive NLEs have Preboard
Ratings below the Class Mean.
6. OVERALL Ranking

Class mean is 2.8
Successful graduates have Overall Ranking better than the Class
Mean.
Graduates who failed in one or two successive NLEs have Overall
Ranking below the Class Mean.
7. With the six factors considered in this study, only the Trending Rate
Ranking (TRR) displayed opposite observation as to the chance of passing
the NLE.

Recommendations:
1. As to IQ, the existing policy of open admission even with an IQ of 3BA has a little
impact as to NLE success rates. This may continue but measures should still be in
place to develop the learner throughout the 4-year nursing program. A strong
general education foundation is considered as a plus factor in BSN success rates.
2. As to Academic Performance (GPA), the grading system of 2.0 as the passing
mark on all nursing major subjects is appropriate as the minimum passing mark for
them to become an NLE material. The 60-40 is still recommended in the
computation for grade. However, to increase the chances of passing the NLE,
students should do more within the program by increasing their GPAs. Increasing
the passing mark at 1% per year until the 5 th year is considered to be a viable
action in relation to this.
3. As to the Trending Averages and Rates, standards should be set in measuring
their performances during the Nursing Review Program on the 4 th level.
Standardization includes the materials used, the frequency, the examination setup,
the rating scale and the software features employed in the trending. Previous
batch performances may be benchmarked as to the trend of the nursing program
across the years or may also be extended to the institutions partners, say UP-
College of Nursing or the The Big Leap Program Colleges.
4. As to the Preboard Ratings, there is a need to standardize the rating scale toreflect that of PRC-BON computations of Board Ratings. The batch mean score
approaches to that of the national mean for the last 3 years. Benchmarking is
further encouraged with a reputable nursing institution, say UP-College of Nursing
or the The Big Leap Program Colleges to increase predictability of NLE result.
5. As to the Overall Ranking, it is recommended to develop a standard ranking and
monitoring program for nursing graduates. This would be then basis for decision by
the nursing graduate and his/her family on their readiness to take the NLE with
higher probability of passing.
6. From the ranking stipulated herein, the College of Nursing is recommended to
design an appropriate Nursing Review Program to answer the specific need of a

the nursing graduate or a group of nursing graduates in their preparation for he
