 Tour #1 The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH)    Friday, October 21, 2016 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. Meet at the MAH in the Foyer 705 Front Street Santa Cruz, CA Limit: 40  

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) is a three‐floor museum centered in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz. It's a different kind of museum, one that focuses on building community here in Santa Cruz County. This happens through exhibitions, events, and projects that connect people to art, history, ideas, and each other. The MAH believes that art and history are for everyone, and we work hard to offer experiences that connect people from many walks of life: across generations, ethnicity, and background. That means multi‐cultural festivals, exhibitions filled with wonder, partnerships throughout the county, and surprising, fun connections with people and ideas across our community. Your guide will give an overview of the Museum of Art & History’s mission and will explain overall themes of each exhibit. They will note specific ways we activate the spaces with students. Your guide will be open to questions during self‐exploration times. Each tour will last around an hour. This is the museum that will be hosting the annual GLOW: A FESTIVAL of Fire & Light on Saturday evening 7:00 p.m.‐10:00 p.m. (https://santacruzmah.org/event/glow) Distance: 0.5 mi.

 Tour #4 The R Blitzer Gallery            Friday, October 21, 2016 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. 2801 Mission Street Ext. Santa Cruz, CA Limit: 25  The R. Blitzer Gallery is the consummate art gallery located on the west side of Santa Cruz, California in a renovated warehouse space that for years made Wrigley chewing Gum.  Next to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Natural Bridges State Park and the U. C. Santa Cruz marine sciences campus, the gallery is the ideal location to attract art lovers from the local community as well as the San Franciso Bay, Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula. The Gallery, with 19 foot ceilings and natural light, permanently feature the bronze sculpture and paintings of owner Robert Blitzer. Themed shows with visiting artists are scheduled on a regular basis and the immense space is ideal for art receptions, theater groups, poetry readings and other special events.  Robert’s metal work is direct welded brass, copper, steel and found metals. Most of the works feature natural stones, crystals, and semi‐precious stones reflecting the artist’s love of natural and refractive materials. Figurative forms are mostly dramatic in posture, expressing movement.  Robert’s Mask‐like 3_D and wall sculpture faces seemingly reach back to a mystic era, when history was born.   Distance: 1.8 mi. Map provided at conference registration. (http://rblitzergallery.com/)   

 Tour #5 The Radius Gallery            Friday, October 21, 2016 Tour time TBA Hours of operation: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. 1010 River Street Santa Cruz, CA Limit: 35 Please show Registration Badge for FREE admittance.  Radius Gallery is a professional art venue and gallery at the Tannery Arts Center showcasing the work of local, regional and international artists. Curated exhibitions are year‐round and present all art disciplines.  Radius Gallery is an independently owned business at the Tannery Arts Center showcasing the artwork with a curatorial vision. Exhibitions are curated by the Director, guest curators, are year‐round, and present all art disciplines. Radius Gallery is the largest space located in the historic Tanyard Building of the former Salz Tannery and is available to rent for events, receptions, workshops, and other creative projects.  Radius is the only business at the Tannery with regular public business hours, offers guided tours, and provides a unique space to the community for a variety of projects. Visitors are guaranteed to view exhibitions that are thought‐provoking, professionally executed, and have a strong curatorial vision.  We sell art! We offer event space for event! We are knowledgeable, enthusiastic about Santa Cruz, and want to see the arts THRIVE!  Distance: 1.6 mi         

 Tour #6 The Santa Cruz City Mosaic Tour          Friday, October 21, 2016 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Santa Cruz Mission State Park, and on the bridge crossings of Water Street, Laurel Street and Soquel Avenue Santa Cruz, CA Limit: None  The mural, on the retaining wall facing downtown at the 144 School St. site, was created by a team of more than 200 volunteers using an image combining winning contest entries from two Mission Hill Middle School students and first installed in late May. The new art project is designed to welcome pedestrians up into the park, where the park’s signature adobe is the only remaining structure from Mission Santa Cruz, founded in 1791. The structure is the oldest in Santa Cruz County. Middle school students, Katherine Tkoch, 12, and Flora Chatwin, 13, worked with their teacher, local artist Kathleen Crocetti, to combine their artwork after being selected as mural contest winners in March. The mosaic mural, featuring a large tree and pathway in a sunny landscape and winding up the walls of a stairway from Mission Street into the park, was created using thousands of pieces of tessera, a colorful tile, and glass. The mural’s pieces were laid out by volunteers at Mission Hill Middle School, Delta Charter High School and Cypress Charter High School, the Museum of Art & History 3rd Friday and State Parks Spring Wildflower Day and at Nueva Vista Community Resources. (By Jessica A. York, Santa Cruz Sentinel)  On the Laurel Street Bridge,  Ms. Crocetti’s students and a team of volunteers created and installed a series of animal‐themed mosaics on the Laurel Street bridge over the San Lorenzo River (POSTED BY SCEFSTAFF IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS, NEWS FLASH)  In 2011, Eighty‐four (84) Mission Hill Middle School students created 59 mosaic images of plants and animals of the San Lorenzo Watershed. The project was implemented under the guidance of Nancy Howels and Kathleen Crocetti . Three sides of every lamp‐post (the sides visible from the bridge) have an installed mosaic image. The project was sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency  In 2012, on the Soquel Street Bridge, 175 students Mission Hill Middle School Students made and installed 89 mosaics on both sides of the bridge, on the insets of the street lamp bases. The project was sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency. 

 The Tannery Arts Center has a spectacular Ebb ‘n Flow mosaic mural taking up three large cylindrical shapes that hold up metal trees of hanging fused glass designs set inside vintage tracker cog wheels. The ground is a winding river of blues and white depicting the San Lorenzo River. All the native wildlife around the San Lorenzo Watershed are depicted hand made, and put together by over 500 volunteers taking over 3,000 hours of time. Come see this magical Mosaic masterpiece that is the Flag Ship of the Tannery Arts Center.
