Decoding/Phonics Strategies

• Decoding is the ability to applyknowledge of letter-soundrelationships.

• Phonics is one approach to readinginstruction that teaches studentsthe principles of letter-sound

relationships and how to sound outwords.



Suggested Activities

• Play with magnetic letters.• Look at written materials around the

classroom and at school signs to see if

student can spot familiar words andletter patterns.• Write notes to classmates and family.

Represent each sound you hear as you

write.• Sound out a word, pay close attention

to the print.



• Sort pictures and objects by the soundthe teacher is teaching.

• Teach phonics in a systematic andexplicit way. Engage students in

reading and writing activities• Use manipulative to help teach letter-

sound relationships.

Provide more of your instruction tostudents who you've divided into need-based groups.
