Core CompetenciesThe company’s core competency is the precise measurement of electrical conductivity of fluids over the entire range of possible conductivities. This core competency has been applied to fuels, sea water, ink, and chemicals.

ResearchThe research D-2 Inc. is conducting for the U.S. Navy “Low-Power Arctic environmental sensors for UUVs” draws upon the company’s long standing experience with conductivity, temperature, and density (CTD) sensors. Led by Mr. Alan Fougere, the company president, this work draws upon prior experience at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Falmouth Scientific, Inc. The resulting CTD+O2 sensor will be UUV agnostic.

ProductsTo help ensure safe fuel storage and distribution Airlines and regulatory bodies established ASTM D2624 for Electrical Conductivity of Aviation and Distillate Fuels and ASTM D1655/ DEFSTD 91-91 for specifying permissible levels of fuel conductivity. D-2 has developed a range of Alternating Current (AC) based handheld and in-line instrumentation which now offers the aviation industry a totally new dimension in fuel conductivity management.

Recently the D-2 In-Line Conductivity Meter, JF-1A instrument was introduced by a major Asian refinery to control dosing of Static Dissipater Additive (SDA) in a refinery JET fuel rundown stream. As a result of the conversion to an automated process provided by the D-2 team they demonstrated and annual saving of $100,000 and a 50% labor reduction. The JF-1A in-line conductivity meter provides the most accurate and reliable measurement of liquid chemical conductivity for ASTM D2624 specification requirements.

The JF-1A In-Line Conductivity Sensor provides real time, high accuracy, and long term measurement of various in transfer liquid chemical‘s conductivity (ASTM-D2624). In-line conductivity measurement provides significant benefits over hand sampling by offering the ability to measure conductivity at the conditions (especially temperature) in the pipeline. The JF-1A can be connected to automated refinery/terminal management system to provide a continuous record of product conductivity levels for reporting purposes, eliminating the requirement for labor-intensive sampling and manual record keeping.

Al-1 SDA Additive Injection SystemD-2 Incorporated is the leading manufacturer for fully automated conductivity improver injection skids. Utilizing the company’s patented AC measurement technology for conductivity D-2 is able to provide real time measurement and control of conductivity in multiple pipelines. We have years of knowledge and experience, which has allowed us to develop new techniques for mixing, injection and controlling by conductivity. The JF-1A in line conductivity sensors used for control is ASTM D2624 certified. This result in a fully automated product conductivity control, which is fully ASTM specification certified.

JF-WA1 Hydro-Light Free Water DetectorFree Water in jet fuel is a major problem throughout the industry. Ensuring this free water does not get by your filters and into the aircraft is essential to all airport operations. D-2 Incorporated has developed a new free water detector, the JF-WA1 Hydro-Light that has greatly improved the user interface, repeatability, reproducibility of testing results for un-dissolved aka free water in fuel.

The JF-WA1 Hydro-Light is a new un-dissolved water (free water) detector. This device is now listed in ASTM D3240 and has improved the accuracy and repeatability of the method dramatically. The Hydro-Light’s main advantage is the ease of use. The features that the Hydro-Light offers exclusively include: Digital Readout, 0-50 ppm range, free calibration verification shuttle, USB Data Output. The Hydro-Light has available accessories including a carrying case, and a portable battery for field use. The JF-WA1 Hydro-Light uses the standard 25mm pads in the ASTM D3240 method.

MicroCond2 In-Process Conductivity SensorMicroConD2 detects early changes in oil quality/condition before damage occurs. The early detection of critical lubricant states is the only way to ensure that preventative maintenance on the transmission is performed before damage occurs. It is well known that early failures of bearings in wind turbines due to surface cracking and subsequent corrosion fatigue represent a technical problem that can lead to unnecessary downtime and costly repairs. Providing maintenance for offshore turbines presents an even greater problem due to accessibility issues. The MicroConD2 sensor can identify critical operating states early, so that corrective action can commence before serious damage takes place.

The MicroConD2 is available in two physical styles: the original “flow-over” design or the “flow-through” design. The flow-over design mounts through the side-wall of the process whereas the flow-through design allows the fluid to pass through the sensor body. This flow-through design allows improved flushing of the sensor head which is critical with dual fluid interface systems or processes that can trap air bubbles. Both configurations can be equipped with one of the many different tube/pipe adapters commonly used in the chemical field.

Recently the company has added Laboratory Equipment for the measurement of ASTM Test Methods D2624 and D3240. D-2 offers a range of sensors for the measurement of chemical fluid conductivity, dielectric constant, and temperature. Additionally we offer laboratory instruments for the measurement of free water in fuels, and other chemical streams. The company designs/builds/installs fully automated additive D2624 conductivity control injections systems. ManagementAlan Fougere, PresidentAlan is a serial entrepreneur having started Falmouth Scientific Inc. (FSI) in 1989 and then D-2 in 2004. The fuel product line sensor business was transferred from FSI to D-2, Inc. and then grown by Mr. Fougere. His technical strengths are analog design capabilities coupled with an ability to identify and solve complex customer problems. Past customer solutions indicate that “he looks at problems with a fresh and interested eye.” Alan has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Masters in Engineering from Boston University.
