HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?

• A situational analysis carried out revealed , numerous care givers accompanying HIV/AIDS

patients to Chiredzi Ketter Poly Clinic lacked information on HIV /AIDS.

• Hence the need for Education and Support for the care giver

• Council adopted an HIV/AIDS policy in 2010 dubbed the” Home Grown solution” with the

thrust being ‘Prevention, Education , Care And Support’.

HI Meeting with of Primary care givers HIV defined& approaches to living with HIV.

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

• To promote acceptance of ones HIV positive status and promote disclosure.

•To improve the quality of life of the patient ,the patient’s family and caregiver’s

• To diminish the burden of care giving which causes stress in life.

• Knowledgeable and supported care givers with good psychological health provide

the best care .

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED?

Key Target :

• Pregnant Women and their spouses.

Head nurse-Mr Kujongonya with pregnant women and their spouses on antenatal visit

Expecting mothers are encouraged to come for antenatal and postnatal visits with

their spouses so that they may be tested together and get health education together.

Involvement:

• The burden of looking after the sick is on women, number of male care givers is trivial .

• Men have limited involvement since they are mostly at work. Clinic staff are advocating

for Mobile Clinics to facilitate VCT at the workplaces so as to address men’s concerns

on HIV& AIDS.

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

• The practise is sustainable if Council

Embarks on Resource mobilisation

• In terms of (replication) /expanding care and support services ,there is need for

continued partnerships with the relevant Ministries and NGO’s and Private sector.

Council to commence payment of incentives to caregivers in a bid to increasetheir number and to keep them motivated as well.

LESSONS LEARNT

• No organisation can work alone in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there is need

to work with other organisations so as to improve access to treatment, care and

support .Thereby reaching more people needing similar help and support.

• Hence the importance of forming partnerships with;

Various ministries

Various NGO’s

The Private Sector
