ST. GEORGE CLUB NOTES

THE FOOTBALL RECORD

Spectators once again received greatvalue from a Southern Districts v St.George clash at Rosedale on Sunday.Several times the Saints looked like-

ly to break away but on each occasionthe Blue and Whites were able to re-store the' position. In the end it wastheir great accuracy that clinched thevictory. We had 18 triers and several very

good players. Bob Stirling was on topat centre half back and Ralph Todd, playing his last game for the season, asusual controlled the centre. John Bol-ton and Wally Wallis were sound in de-fence and Kim Smith, Dale Dalton, Geoff

Essendon's great display against Carl-ton, leaders in the V.F.L. competition, augurs well for next Saturday's bigclash with Geelong at the S.C.G.Carlton was saved from certain defeat

by the Dons inaccuracy at the goalfront.Essendon had 25 scoring shots while

:the Blues had only 19, but were on tar-get.

South Sydney Club has fallen on leantimes in recent years. However, it is no fault of Alby Young,

a wonderful worker and loyal supporterof the club for a long period of years.During his association with the club,

Alby has seen many champions wearingthe Red and Green uniform.Names that come quickly to hand in-

clude Frank Dixon, Hector Starr, RexFerguson, the late Bill Morris, who wona Brownlow Medal in Victoria, .ClydeHelmer and Max Lowe.

The Sydney public will see two ofAustralia's champion footballers as op-posing captains at the S.C.G. next Satur-day.Ken Fraser, Essendon and former Vic-

torian captain who is a magnificent cen-tre half forward. The Geelong captain is Graham

"Polly" Farmer, who has representedboth Western Australia and Victoria.Polly is one of the most polished

ruckmen the game has known.

Round thirteen appears evenly bal-anced, the clash between Sydney Navaland Easts should be a thriller, however, despite Easts great form against Wests,I select Naval to win narrowly. In other games Southern Districts,

Newtown, Wests and University arechosen to win.

popular personality Ray Howardmakes an interesting point concerningthe famous Newtown Club. One of the oldest football clubs in

Sydney, Newtown has won 17 premier-18 occasions. The interesting point is that Newto,wn

has never won a premiership title atTrumper Oval. All of Newtown's 17premierships were won at ErskinevilleOval. At present, in top position on the

competition table, the Red and Whiteshave not won a first gr~de pennantsince 1950.

Sydney Naval's shining star is BobOlive, a Western Australian player ofhigh quality.Bob has thrilled the Sydney crowds

with his long kicking and high marking.Olive, who was formerly attached to

the Navy, plays in the full back posi-tion.

Eastern Suburbs players to catch theeye in last Sunday's thrilling clash withWests were Graham McKenzie, whomust have had a "million" kicks atcentre. Ron Fitzpatrick, Graeme Sum-mers, Jack Hamilton, Terry Stone, MikeCamilleri, John Roberts, Kevin Little,Bobby Jones and Brian Ratcliffe.

V.F.L. Club, MeLbourne, in the processof rebuilding their side had no less than13 players under the age of 21 againstCollingwood last Saturday .Don Williams, 31, and Brian Dixon 30,

were the only veterans in the Demonsline-up.Melbourne with five wins, will miss

the four this year, but can look forwardto next season with optimism.

BALMAIN CLUB NOTESNORTH SHORE CLUB NOTESCaptain Cec. Quilkey, manning the

helm, steered the "Tigers" on a truecourse last Saturday at Trumper whenBalmain recorded a great win againstSydney Naval. After being down by four goals at

half time the "Tigers" managed to pegthe Navy's lead back to a few pointson the final change. Sensing victorywithin their grasp-the last quartersaw a tenacious "Tiger" team win theday: Fast attacking football feature, excellent marking, accurate goal kick-ing and perfect team work was theorder of the day-all 18 Balmain boysplayed like champions.

Now that they have returned to topform bigger and better wins can beexpected from this "Never say die""Tiger" pack. The Reserve Grade team put up a

good effort against a more experiencedNavy side. Players to show out were:Paul Enright and Paul Hopley. On the Social Side. The Balmain-

Ryde Junior Association are holding aCabaret on Friday July 28 at the Mas-onic Hall, Victoria Road, Drummoyne.Tickets are $3.5 a double and $1.75 asingle, and by contacting John Mel-drum-56-7094f---reservationsi can bemade.

At Erskineville last Saturday wecould manage only one win out of thethree games played.Although we never "gave in" New-

town proved too strong in the seniormatch and consequently we were un-able to head them.Good tactical moves by Coach

Graeme Long at three quarter timeproved to be the winning factor for oursecond eighteen. Trailing all day wemanaged to come from behind in the

last few minutes to grab victory. The juniors are getting closer to a

win each week. Newtown beat themon the bell after an exciting game. Thanks go to all concerned for a

most enjoyable film night last Thurs-day.We appeal to all wives, girl friends,

and mothers to get the boys off to thefootball earlier on Saturday or Sunday. At the moment some of them are arriv-ing anything up to 24 hours late.

Space-Aero-Jet-Astro translated to the Arena of Australian Footb:ll is the S.A./.A. for the four Quarters in which we play Eighteen-A-Side on the largestfootball field in the World spells Space-Space to move-Space to play-Space for thy spectators to see the flight of the ball. Aero calls to mind the Airborne style ofplay the Eighteen-A-Side needs to dominate the game-to get the ball off the ground-into the air-through to the Full Forward to the centre goal-before the bayingpacks-of the opposing Backs-have a chance to realise they have been beaten in the Rucks-and-at all points of play. As fast as Jets the Rovers move-dodgingand weaving-away from the Rucks-to kick the ball across to the fastest movers in the game-the Astronauts-who kick and mark with all the deadly accuracy ofguided missiles. Straight to the ball they fly-over the heads of the slower moving antelopes-in the perpetual motion-to take the prize and the applaudits of thecrowd. In all the thrilling moments-of this brilliant fast moving game-there is one trained to the peak of perfection-the greatest ,jet propelled actionist on the field-who cannot falter for one second-The Umpire in control on whose sight and speed depends the decisions of the game.
