ANIMAL MINISTRY - Rev Dr Lorna Khoo

Animal Ministry, 7 February 2017

Seven people (mostly Animal Ministry team members) participated in the talks on “Ministry to animals and their guardians” and “God and vegetarianism”. The Rev Dr Lorna Khoo shared on the first topic, which included ministering during times of bereavement, while Grace Tan covered the second topic. It was a very enlightening session.

Chinese Ministry- Mr Yong Chin Loung

Praise to the Lord that our Chinese Ministry has reached its 21st anniversary milestone, which was celebrated with a Thanksgiving service. Around 100 people attended the service. Rev Gordon Aw was the guest speaker on that day.

Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien songs were sung by the Chinese choir, Cantonese dialect small group and Caleb85 respectively to praise God and tell of His grace upon the Chinese Ministry.

Church School Office Bearers & Teachers Installation 2017

Quarterly Birthday Celebration

On 11 Jan, Caleb85 had its quarterly (Jan-Mar) birthday celebration. We celebrated the birthdays of four of our regulars who bless the Caleb corner every Wednesday afternoon with joy and love. May God bless them with good health, joy and peace all the days of their life.

Lunar New Year Celebration

The Lunar New Year Celebration was held on 8 Feb with Lo Hei. Twenty members and friends attended the Lo Hei. We started our celebration with thanksgiving and worshipping the Lord. We want to thank Pastor Lorna for making time to join us in the celebration.

Young Adults Welcome Lunch

The 2017 Young Adults Lunch on 12 February saw 70 AMC young adults from different stages of lives gathering to get to know one another better through lunch and games, and to find out what the Young Adults' Ministry had in store for them in 2017.

It was an meaningful afternoon seeing the young adults actively interacting with people outside their age groups, or simply just catching up with friends whom they had not seen in a while! This lunch will be an annual feature on the Young Adults' Ministry calendar, so do watch this space!

TRAC Intercessors Training, 28 February 2017

TRAC Intercessors Training @ Aldersgate Methodist Church was conducted by Ms Jean Wong from the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer teaching on "The Intercessors' Character".Fifty-three people signed up for the course - 16 from Aldersgate, 7 from Barker Road, 4 from Charis, 2 from City Missions, 1 from Covenant Community, , 17 from Faith. 2 from

Living Hope, 3 from Paya Lebar and 1 from Pentecost.

MINISTRY TUESDAY, 17 January 2017 Rev Vincent Goh, pastor at Christ Methodist Church, spoke on "Waiting on The Lord". His message was a timely reminder for Christians to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and strength. He encouraged the 28 attendees to persevere in sitting at the feet of God, as distractions often compete to take priority in lives. It was a serious message, punctuated with lively humour by one who strives to "walk the talk".

All who attended were prayed for by Rev Vincent Goh and both AMC pastors.

God @ Work

Aldersgate Marketplace Ministry is currently running Ken Costa’s God @ Work Conversations in One-north. Christians from various companies and churches have been meeting since 3 March in the privacy of a meeting room every Friday to fellowship over lunch (provided free) and to listen to a short video by Ken Costa. After watching the video, a representative from Alpha Singapore moderates a group discussion. The AMC U16 team had a friendly game with West Coast Community Sports Club (CSC) on 19 Feb 2017 for the different categories: U16, U12 and U9. AMC emerged victorious in all three categories with the following results:• U16: 4-2• U12: 4-1• U9: 7-2

Football

AMC Football team is preparing for the next season of Crossroads Cup. Our first game of the season is kicking off on 26 March 2017, against Ang Mo Kio Shepherds. The game will kick off at 3pm at our very own Fairfield Methodist School Field.

The season continues with the following two games in April:23 April: AMC vs Faith Methodist Church (Young Adults), 5pm at ACJC30 April: AMC vs The People’s Bible Church, 3pm at Fairfield Methodist School Field

Basketball

The Basketball Interest Group continues to attract many different groups of people, with ages ranging from 13 to 38. Nicholas, who is 13 this year, is a passionate

and skilful player. With his skills, he definitely gave the adults a challenging time in our last basketball session in February.

Basketball fans, do join us for the next session on 26 March and 23 April, 2.30pm to 5pm. See you at the sheltered courts of Fairfield Methodist School (Primary).

Badminton

Badminton is a good sport which families come together to enjoy. In our last session, we saw new players from the Youthphoria who joined us for the very first time. Leah was here with her CG leader, Amanda Choo, and her classmate from FMS(S), Shelby.If you are keen to know more members

through the game of badminton, do join us for the next session on 6 May, 10 am to 12pm.

youthphoria - Mr Joel Tan

ADAM VS EVE, 4 Feb

Saturday, 4 Feb 2017 saw Youthphoria coming together once again as a growing community – this time, in their respective Adam and Eve groups. Every year, we make it a point to gather separately with different cohesion activities suited for the respective group. This year was no different. The girls met up for lunch before

heading to Clementi for an exhilarating (and aching) time of bowling while the guys met up at Settlers Cafe for a great time of food, drinks, and board games. Through this simple event, barriers between Youthphorians came down as we enjoyed a time of bonding without age barriers or limitations. Overall, it was a wonderful time of fun getting to know friends both old and new.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF FAMILY, 12 February

Felicia Soo, a mother of five, shared her parenting experiences and related them to building a culture of family in church. Before concluding her sharing, she went down on her knees and interceded for Youthphorians’ parents because of a prompting she received from God the night before. She prayed and sought forgiveness for falling short as parents and placing undue pressure on their children in order to achieve the highest rungs of academic excellence.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF EMPOWERMENT, 26 February

Using Youthphoria's mission - Encounter, Empower and Engage – to frame the topic of building a culture of empowerment, Rufus Chan first explored the relationship between these three qualities through the Great Commission given in Matthew 28 along with examples from the life of Paul. He spoke about the importance of encountering God for empowerment and how encountering God brings about new identities that propel us to be empowered. Rufus also

shared that empowerment has to result in engagement. If not, it will just be useless. It will be like a dam that never releases water – it never creates power. Thus Rufus illustrated the significance of the co-existence of these three qualities.

Focusing on empowerment, Rufus highlighted that empowerment is a process that precedes engagement. He dissected it into three segments - Who empowers us, Who do we empower and How do we empower. This comprehensive approach towards empowerment taught the youths the significance and source of empowerment within our community and everyone’s responsibility to empower others with the help of the Holy Spirit. Using Jesus as a model in how He went about empowering His disciples, Rufus emphasised how Jesus’ example can be applied in our own ministry.

Rufus concluded by urging all the youths to get rid of the arrowing culture in Youthphoria and instead embrace the empowerment given to them by the Youth leaders. He reminded them that empowerment is an eternal investment that yields eternal fruit for the Kingdom, thus encouraging them to have an attitude and heart that is bent before the Lord in humility to serve Him and His people.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF COLLABORATION, 19 February

Pr Wendy Chiang started off with sharing the struggles in youth ministry – how simple it is to invite friends to youth ministry, yet so difficult to help them to connect and feel a sense of belonging within the community. This results in many youths falling away from the ministry/community. She emphasised that it is our responsibility not only to create a community but also to live out the reality. It is difficult to be a Christ-like community unless we change the way we see each other.

Using King Solomon's life as an example of how his life eventually fell apart because of there being too many divisions, Pr Wendy addressed the problem by simply introducing four aspects of building trust among one another – naming people's talents, gifts and unique qualities; taking time to know the people in our midst; practising honesty about yourself and lastly, not to be afraid of conflict.

All these elements work hand in hand together to establish trust with one another. Trust comes from knowing each individual's character, competence etc. and all this takes time. Pr Wendy encouraged the youths to start today and overcome the barriers of isolation within our own communities so as to shape a culture of collaboration, uniting us all in God.

Mission Trip to Nepal: Jeffrey Hoo

Jeffrey Hoo is undergoing a three-month TRACKERS discipleship programme. He recently returned from a mission trip to Nepal, when he was the assistant group leader. The team went to Nepal for soccer and medical ministry. Through the soccer ministry, they interacted and bonded with the locals through the universal language of a soccer game.

During the medical camp, they supported a team of doctors from Grace Methodist Church by performing the roles of ushers and pharmacists. Through this mission trip, Jeffrey was able to see how God's hand continues to move in the beautiful country of Nepal. He also learned to love unconditionally as how God first loved us.

Awaken Generation: Michelle Leong

Though only in its third year, Awaken Generation (AG) has been guiding and grooming over 100 individuals in music and worship. Michelle's journey started from a Facebook ad. She is now enrolled in the one-year, part-time programme for vocal training.

What's special about AG is that not only does Michelle get to hone her vocal skills, she's also able to do so in a safe space while being mentored by the caring community of mentors. She hopes that in her journey with AG, she will grow deeper and more steadfast in faith as well as learn how to use the gift of music in worship and to be able to give back to the AMC community!

Mission Trip to India: Jared Hoe

Jared is currently in India for six weeks for missions exposure. It was initially meant to increase understanding of agriculture and sustainability and how to use it to reach out and disciple people. However, Asha Kiran, the society he is with, has diverse services ranging from healthcare to community development.

So far, Jared has been largely involved with the Community Service Unit (CSU) and the Education team. The CSU aims to encourage organic farming and limit the use of pesticides and insecticides, to promote government schemes that aim to help farmers in the area, as well as to provide some skill-based training for the those who are not in school. All these are done through their Community Farm Workers, Officers and Coordinators. Believing strongly in the second greatest commandment Jesus mentioned in Matthew 22:39 – to love your neighbour as yourself – the team also reached out to interior villages to see how the villagers can be helped. For education, Jared has been tasked to teach primary school mathematics to a class of seven students.

Jared’s request for his remaining days there is for prayer for him to continue to follow God's heart and be open to His work. Jared feels that God wants to break him before He can use him in future.

Missions - Ms Tricia Tan

Prek Ompel Methodist Kindergarten (POMK)

God has answered our prayers to open the hearts of the local community in sending their children to attend a kindergarten providing Christian education! More students have enrolled in POMK, with a total of 14 children attending the morning or afternoon sessions.

Thanks to the generosity of a sponsor from AMC, playground facilities for POMK (which is located within the compound of Prek Ompel Methodist Church) have been installed. This playground provides the children with a safe outdoor space for play and development of their gross motor skills.

One of the joys of serving as a missionary is being able to walk with people through the seasons of life. Through the seasons, God is faithful and His love never fails.

In January, we attended the wedding of Nop Sovannara and Khoeun Phearen (also known to many of us as Sreyneang) at Prek Ompel Methodist Church (POMC), officiated by Rev Svay Youthearoath. Rev Teresa Wilborn shared the exhortation. Sovannara is an alumnus of COSI (Community Outreach Services Immanuel Children’s Village) and he met Sreyneang at the Methodist Hostel. Their marriage is a testimony of the impact and potential of the hostel ministry presently supported by AMC.

Also in January, Pha Somalen, a young adult from POMC, whom we had sponsored for tertiary education, gave birth to her first-born girl, Somavortey. She currently lives with her husband, Rev Vuth Kakada, who serves as a Methodist pastor in Battambang. Somavortey arrived prematurely but we thank God that both mother and child are safe and healthy now.

In February, we celebrated Chheng Long’s engagement to Samphors. Chheng Long is a second year music undergraduate from POMC under AMC’s sponsorship. He serves in church every week, playing the keyboard during the service. Samphors also grew up in a Methodist Church in Kampong Speu province. We were very glad to see this couple come together. May the Lord continue to watch over this couple and their families.

Also in February, we attended the funeral of an elderly church member. Mdm Lau Soun had been a long time member of POMC. She and her household have all come to the Lord. We thank God for her legacy of faith and pray that her daughter, Sotheary, will bring up her four children in the fear of the Lord.

Rom Theara, 11 years old, 1st in her class. She will be promoted to grade 3.

Srey Nen Kem, 12 years old, is a class monitor and 1st in her class. She may be overaged in her class but will be promoted from grade 1 to grade 3.

Hope House Ministry Update (by Pr Loh Han Chew)

Every evening except Saturday and Sunday, about 25 children from the Chbar Ompov slum in Phnom Penh attend our Hope House Ministry programme.

One of the ministry’s basic objectives is to encourage unschooled children from the slum to be excited about education by providing literacy classes, and thereafter preparing and supporting students with potential to obtain formal education, eg. at a public school.

It is an additional challenge to convince parents to put their children through school. Many of these children spend most of their time contributing to their family’s income by helping out in 'penny business' or hawking wares in the streets.

Here are some encouraging updates:Below are three children who formerly attended Hope House’s literacy classes and are now doing well in the public school. They continue to come back for afternoon lessons (tuition) at Hope House.

The school year for the Methodist School - Timor Leste (MSTL) drew to a close on 25 Nov 2016, culminating with an Honours Day celebration in appreciation of the parents. The school, headed by our missionary David Chan, held afternoon classes for 20 Grade 7 students last year.

Girls Brigade - Ms Joanna Lim Mei Yee

GB Enrollment Service

The 3rd GB Company celebrated our 80th Enrollment Service on 4 March 2017. It saw a turnout of about 400 people. Our Secondary 1 girls pledged themselves to seek, serve and follow Christ as they were enrolled and many of our girls picked up awards from their years of service. The 80th Enrollment Service was also celebrated with the very adorable 3rd Primary Company choir, a special and heart-melting hand-signing performance, 3rd Secondary Company’s Fancy Drill, a special ukulele performance as well as specially-made videos bearing testimonies of the positive impact GB has made in the lives of the girls. We give God all the glory and thanks for His faithfulness and grace towards us for the past 80 years!

AMC staff and Aldersgate Praise Centre staff/teachers team had their annual Chinese New Year get-together & Lo Hei lunch at the church Social Hall on 8 February 2017.

The admin team packed mandarin oranges for the Lunar New Year to bless the members and worshippers on 29 January 2017.

Counter-Terrorism Seminar

The seminar was held on 18 February 2017 at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.

There were presentations by relevant agencies on building security, responses during an emergency and terrorism-related issues. The objective was to equip organisations to prepare and respond to such security threats.
