Introduction
• Absolutism Empire governed by the tzar• Russia was a massive empire• Ruling such a huge empire was difficult so problems started
1917 revolution• We have long term causes and a short tem cause (World war 1)
The Tzar
• Tzar Russian emperor.• He gave uniformity to the administration of towns, cultures, military defense, etc.• He was supported by Landed aristocracy, Corrupt bureaucracy, Police and
Orthodox Church of semi-state character.• He dominated the political, economic and religious power.
Causes of the revolution• There were three main causes:
1. Sociological causes
2. Economical causes
3. Political causes
SOCIOLOGICAL CAUSES
• The majority of the population lived under poor conditions. • Long taxes were paid to the tzar.• the population increased land became scarce.• Big differences between rich and poor people• Farmers were unhappy with this conditions revolution began
SOCIOLOGICAL CAUSES
• Industrial revolution arrived to Russia but it was not as developed as in the other European counties.
• Poor people started moving from Russia. • Government was afraid of the developing urban class
ECONOMICAL CAUSES
• A minority group (nobles and aristocracy) managed land and money.
• Workers worked inhumanely 15 hours a day.• Low salaries big taxes.
POLITICAL CAUSES
• Romanov family three centuries ruling Russia.• Duma (elected body) was ignored by the tsar.• Freedom and expression was limited.
POLITICAL CAUSES
• Workers started spreading out an anti-Tsarist ideology. • “socialism” began to take importance.• Republicans, democrats, revolutionaries and socialists were desperate for
a reform.• Nicholas II wanted to look back to the medieval system ignoring a reform.
POLITICAL CAUSES
• Soldiers, who have been treated inhumanely wanted some dignity and better conditions.
• Bolsheviks appeared RSDLP
WORLD WAR I
• The war went badly from the start. • Peasant population was angry all the farms and materials
removed from the war. • Inflation occurred prices rose• Hunger became endemic.
