By popular request, the Annual Scientific Meeting for this year is held in George Town, on the island of Penang. George Town is a well-known UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Centre. It is a historic city situated along the “ Straits of Malacca” with a multicultural heritage reflecting its glorious past, where the West met the East. Many Colonial buildings with their hallmark architectural designs remain well-preserved. Penang is famous for its fabulous food and places of attractions, reflecting its multi-ethnic and multi-religious background. The island is also well-known for its many beaches, natural beauties and greenery.

The theme “Optimizing Patient Outcomes” emphasises a critical and fundamental goal of the surgeon. Having made the correct diagnosis, he/she will have to prescribe a course of management which will produce the best outcome to the patient. Frequently, he/she has to make hard decisions as to whether patient should be strongly advised or persuaded to undergo an operation. The decision-making can be complicated when dealing with high-risk patients. This may be further compounded in an emergency situation when a firm definitive diagnosis could not be readily established pre-operatively. It is therefore, essential that surgeons should equip themselves adequately for their tasks, and learn from the experience of experts and fellow colleagues.

There are many challenges facing the surgeons today. They are expected to have high levels of clinical and surgical skill and to constantly upgrade themselves to meet new challenges. They need to adapt to new technology and be conversant with new treatments. In addition to being competent, they are required to be highly professional and be accountable for their actions.

The College of Surgeons, AMM, has its primary objective of updating surgeons in the latest knowledge and advances in their surgical practice, and enhancing the surgical education and training of young surgeons. It is committed to organise a multi-disciplinary surgical meeting every year, in addition to the many courses and skill workshops which are held regularly throughout the year.

Sincere thanks to you all for making ASM 2015 a success. We greatly cherish the friendship and fellowship sown at this meeting and we are confident that it will continue to flourish and the goodwill remains. ASM 2015 brings together, many surgical experts who generously share their knowledge and experience in critical areas of their practice. They have come from far and near to deliver master classes and lectures. The Organising Committee have been working very hard. We are grateful to the sponsors for their supports. To the delegates who participate, and all of you who have contributed to the success of this meeting, may I say “Terima Kasih”.

Dr Peter Wong Toh Lee

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all delegates to this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting. This time, our prestigious meeting will be based on a unique theme of “Optimizing Patient Outcomes” with numerous relevant topics and discussions focusing on improving patients care. This is indeed in line with recent development of surgical treatments across all surgical fields. With active participation from eminent speakers, domestic and international consultants, specialists, surgical trainees, paramedics and medical students, we hope to bring about healthy and stimulating atmosphere to this conference.

Besides the scientific programme, Penang is a place known for getaways. I am intrigued to invite you to explore what Penang has to satisfy your vacation

and enjoy the entertainment.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the Organising Committee, especially the Scientific Committee and the Penang Organising Committee, for giving their tireless commitment. I wish everyone a successful meeting.

Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Ismail Sagap
