America After WWI
• Wanted to return to normal life, tired of war• More worried about the economy at home• Most Americans lived in cities than rural areas– 1920- 51% of Americans live in urban areas– Kansas- 35% urban
• America was changing– 18th Amendment passed- alcohol illegal– 19th Amendment passed- women gain right to vote– More industrialized- women in the work force

• Agriculture remained central to Kansas economy, but industry began to grow– During WWI- focused on food production– “Win The War With Wheat”

• Airline Industry rose in Wichita• Labor Strikes continue and workers struggle for change

Defeating The Ku Klux Klan in Kansas
• Governor Henry Allen- felt it was important to stand up against the KKK– Why have masks if you stand for Christian values
• Ku Klux Klan- chartered in Georgia– Kansas law- states that it is illegal for “foreign”
corporations to do business without a charter– Board that grants charters- made up of politicians who
oppose the KKK• Klan appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court- they
denied the appeal two years later– Kansas becomes the first state to outlaw the KKK
