Hello, and a very warm welcome. I am delighted to welcome you to the European Institute at the London School of Economics as a member of the MSc International Migration and Public Policy class of 2020/21.

I would like to congratulate you on your academic achievements thus far, and we hope you are looking forward to the coming academic year. The multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental MSc International Migration and Public Policy programme explores key public debates and policy challenges at a time in which the COVID 19 world is witnessing one of the starkest challenges to the way we have traditionally thought about migration and mobility.

In a matter of just a few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world. Extraordinary public policy measures have been taken and lives have changed overnight. The magnitude of the crisis is likely to influence commonly accepted perceptions and ideas on migration and it raises many pertinent questions. How will the pandemic affect the ways we think about cross-border movements? Will it lead to more empathy and solidarity, acknowledging vulnerability and interdependence? Or will it lead to more persistent restrictions on migration and a more securitised debate about immigration?

This programme will enable you to engage with contemporary debates in a multi and inter-disciplinary way, using methods of investigation from disciplines such as international relations, political theory, sociology, anthropology and law.

Over the coming year, you will take two out of three compulsory core courses (International Migration and Immigration Management, International Migration and Migrant Integration, or Europe’s Role in Global Migration Management). You will also take optional courses to the value of two units, and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. You will take a course on research methods and dissertation design, and attend our professional skills programme. Your studies will be supplemented with an excellent events programme and a number of optional extra-curricular activities.

EU in Practice: Politics and Power in the Brussels System

In this innovative seminar series, now in its ninth year, policy practitioners talk about their experience of working with and within EU institutions.

The series is organised and co-chaired by Visiting Professors in Practice Anthony Teasdale, Director General, European Parliamentary Research Service, and Dr Martin Westlake, former Secretary General, European Economic and Social Committee. A typical line-up of speakers will include former ministers and Commissioners, ambassadors and permanent representatives, Secretaries-General and Directors-General, journalists, commentators and experts.

The seminar is held on Friday afternoons. These seminars offer you an excellent opportunity to gain insights from insiders of various sorts as to how politics and power really work within the EU system, as well as to meet and enter into exchanges with the guest speakers.

Confirmed speakers for Michaelmas term already include:

• Heather Grabbe, Director of the Open Society European Policy Institute, speaking on ‘How climate and digital will change the course of European integration’

• Carlo Trojan, former Secretary-General of the European Commission, speaking on ‘The European Union and the German Unification Process, thirty years on.’

• Sir Michael Leigh, former European Commission Director General for Enlargement, speaking on ‘Scenarios for the Future of Europe after Brexit.’

Details about each seminar and registration will be sent to your LSE email address two weeks prior to each EU in Practice event.
