Nursing as a SCIENCE • Critical thinking • Critical decision making • Evidence based practice • Strategies to Provide optimal
outcomes
Do I have what it takes to become a nurse?
• Why do you want to be a nurse? • Is it in your heart? • Do you have the desire to help others? • Are you willing to sacrifice? • Are you ready and willing to study harder/longer than you ever have
before? • Are you ready and willing to sacrifice 21 months (5 semesters) of your
life to benefit the rest of your life?
What is my Passion in life?
• You will be investing: • Significant time • Significant energy • Significant money
• One practical way to determine your personal passions in life is to ask yourself:
• “What would I be willing to do for free?”
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come fully alive.”
–John Eldredge
Profession
• Have a specialized body of knowledge • Must pass a licensing or credentialing exam to participate • Follow a code of ethics that guides behavior of the profession’s
members
Do I enjoy and find fulfillment in serving others?
• Put others first • Possess the confidence to serve • Not position-conscious • Serve out of love
• “Nursing can never be reduced to mere technique… the nature of the
caring relationship is central to most nursing interventions.” –Patricia
Benner
Do I Possess a strong work ethic?
• You must be willing to embrace the hard work required and be willing to do
what is needed without taking shortcuts to get by.
• “Never be afraid to work and to work hard. Work pure and simple is not likely to
do you harm… Never seek for the soft spots or the easy places in hospital work.”
–Hampton Robb
What are you willing to give up to make school a priority?
• We all have 168 hours in each week. No more, no less.
