What has the right to consume your attention, demand your time? What would it take to get you to drop everything, instantly? Interesting questions. Andrew and Simon Peter, James and John had a chance to face those questions in the flesh as Jesus called to them from the shore. “Follow me!” he cried. And the brothers did, no questions, no discussions. They simply recognized what was truly important, the call of their Saviour. Nothing else mattered, nothing could hold them back. What enviable courage, what laudable faith these first followers had, to drop everything and go. Where would our Church be today if we all placed Christ in that position of importance? We’ll never know until we too drop everything, and step out in faith.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk Continuing on the topic of Traditions, February 2nd is coming and this year it’s on a Sunday. For those of you who don’t remember, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and is also referred to as Candlemas. The feast both points us back to Christmas and leads us forward to Easter. It has been celebrated in the church since the 4th century making it one of the oldest celebrations in the faith. The connection of the feast to candles comes from the 8th century. In some parts of the world there is a huge procession of lit candles or torches from one sacred space to the church where the Mass will be celebrated. In some parts of the world after the Mass, a huge parish meal is celebrated. In other parts of the world a close connection to Mary is provided as part of the celebration, even to carrying images of the Blessed Mother in procession with the candles. In some places the procession actually makes its way through the streets of the town or village making stops along the way at churches, hospitals, nursing homes and the like. The general idea is to bring the light of Christ to and through the community. Often the Feast begins with a blessing of the candles that will be used in the homes of the parishioners and in the church in the coming year. Then there is a procession into the church with candles, during which the hymn “In His Temple Now Behold Him” (or something similar) is sung. The candles help us experience Christ as the light of the world. When we pray at home or at the church the candles are lit to remind us of Christ’s presence.

This year the people of God are invited to bring the candles you will use through the year in your homes to the church so that they might be blessed. This will only occur at the 9:00 Mass at Assumption and the 11:00 Mass at St. Basil’s.

Peace Fr. Kevin
