Mission Gift Emphasis

Today’s mission gifts will support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, last week $222.12 was given. The hospital was founded in 1962 and serves approximately 7500 children on an annual basis. Their mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. At St. Jude no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. If using a giving envelope please designate your gift in the appropriate area. God bless you.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Volunteers needed to assist Missionary Bobbi Miller (206-397-6668) in organizing, planning, fund raising, grant writing for Maween House, TMBC project in Kenya, East Africa. You are not asked to go but help in assisting with the ministry is requested.

Announcements Blacks at a Glance

Black Politicians from 1867-1877

From 1867 – 1877, a record number of Blacks held public office following the Civil War. During Reconstruction about 2,000 African Americans held public office in local and federal positions. Take a look at some of these politically active participants. Blanche Kelso Bruce and Hiram Revels represented Mississippi in the U.S. Senate and Pinckney B.S. Pinchback served as governor of Louisiana. Robert H. Wood was elected mayor of Natchez, Mississippi and Norris Wright Cuney ran for mayor of Galveston, Texas. In all fourteen Blacks were seated in the House of Representatives, Joseph Rainey, Jefferson Long, Robert DeLarge, Robert Elliott, Benjamin Turner, Josiah Walls, Richard Cain, John Lynch, Alonzo Ransier, James Rapier, Jeremiah Haralson, John Hyman, Charles Nash, and Robert Smalls. In South Carolina’s House of Representatives, the speaker, clerk, doorkeepers, and the chaplain were Black and a Black served on the state supreme court. In the states of Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisiana, the lieutenant governors were Black. In Florida the secretary of state was Black. In many of the Southern states, Blacks were superintendents of education, state treasurers, generals, solicitors, judges, and postmasters. Source: Bennett, Lerone Jr. (2007).
