Last Week’s Class• Studied Deuteronomy 29-30• Learned about Moses third address to the

Israelites and his appeal for them to remain faithful

• Learned about the possibility of restoration for future generations of Israelites

• Learned about the importance of obedience• Israelites were to understand that the key

decision is good versus evil, to love God or not love God

• Moses was limited in his actions by God’s command (vs. 1-2)– Even at 120, he could still accomplish what got allows– He would not enter the Promised Land (Num 20:12)

• Challenge to the people of Israel (vs. 3-6)– Be strong and courageous, do not fear

• Moses’ challenge to Joshua (vs. 7-8)– God was going to use Joshua and he must remain

strong and courageous as well

• Challenge to the priests (vs. 9-13)– Read the law to the people every seven years

Moses’ Challenge (31:1-13)

• Preface to Joshua’s anointing as leader of Israel (vs. 14-15)– God selects Joshua to succeed Moses– To be presented at the tabernacle of meetings (read

about Joshua and the tabernacle in Ex 33:11)

• A song of Moses meant to warn Israel of future apostasy (vs. 16-22)

• Joshua is anointed as the leader (vs. 23)• Moses orders the book of the law to be placed

beside the ark of the covenant (vs. 24-27)• Moses gathers all the leaders (vs. 28-30)

Legacy of Moses (31:14-30)

• Moses recites his song to the leaders (vs. 1-4)– A future prophesy

Text (32:1-52)

• Moses blesses the children of Israel (vs. 1)– Similar to Jacob in Genesis 49

• Glory of God’s revelation to Israel (vs. 2-5)– Moses begins by presenting God. – God is pictured as the source of all blessing in the

figure of the sun rising on His people at Sinai– The sun is the source of physical blessing – Seir refers to the mountain range in Edom over which

the sun would apparently rise as seen from Sinai– Paran refers to the mountains near Kadesh Barnea

that separated the Sinai wilderness from Canaan

Blessing of the Tribes (33:1-5)

• Moses issues blessings beginning with Reuben (vs. 6)

• Then to Judah and Levi (vs. 7-11)• Benjamin and Joseph (vs. 12-17)• Zebulun, Issachar, and Gad (vs 18-21)• Dan was called a lion’s whelp (vs 22)

– Dan was a very troublesome tribe later in the OT

Individual Tribal Blessings (33:6-29)

• Moses travels to Mount Nebo– Saw the Promised Land (vs. 1-3)

• God’s last words to Moses (vs. 4)– This is the land the He swore to give to Abraham,

Isaac, and Jacob

• Death of Moses (vs. 5-8)– In the land of Moab– Buried– in the valley, opposite of Beth Peor

• Joshua becomes the leader of Israel (vs. 9)• Legacy of Moses – none like him (vs. 10-12)

Key Lessons Of Deuteronomy• God desires to bless people through a

relationship with Him• This blessing can be experience through trust

and obedience• We as the sinner redeemed are servants of God

our master• God loves people and we should love God• God manifested His love for Israel through laws• Israel demonstrated love by obeying these laws
