God with usWelcome to Feba’s Prayer Diary for

November-January.

‘“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).’ Matthew 1:23 (NIV)

Our world can sometimes seem rather a dark place. I have no doubt this was the case at the time of Jesus’ birth, too. But into this dark world, Jesus was born as ‘Immanuel’. The amazing truth at the heart of the Christmas story is that, through Jesus, God is indeed with us. However hard that might be to believe, or however bleak our circumstances may be, God is with us. And because of that truth, we have hope.

This has been the experience of the team at Christian Initiatives for Peace in Burundi. Surrounded by violence and threats of worse violence, deprived of essentials, dogged by their country’s fear, CIP’s circumstances could hardly be bleaker. But the team know God is with them and this truth gives them hope. It spurs them on to champion peace and reconciliation – to strive to transform Burundi.

Thank you so much for praying for us. Please join me in praying for all our partners; that they will gain a new awareness of God’s presence and of his power at work in them and around them.

We recently contacted three of our partners and asked them if they would like to send a ‘thank you’ to those praying for them and supporting them. Here is what they sent us. We hope this encourages and inspires you as you prepare to pray for Feba and our partners for another three months.

Thank you

Dear faithful Supporters,

Thank you for your faithful support and prayers, which have enabled us to share the Good News through radio with the Tibetans for the past 25 years.

Gaweylon Team

Your prayers are making a huge difference and this is very clear for us. As a result, our team is working in a marvelous way and love unites us. The image we are reflecting to our listeners is the image of the love of Christ and our hope is to see them change and know Jesus as their savior.

Your spiritual and financial support is allowing IraqFM to proclaim God’s word and to be the voice of our listeners by defending their rights in order to live a life of dignity and hope, despite all the difficulties that our people in Iraq are going through. Your prayers contributed in changing the reality of our ministry to the better. We have been noticing a positive change in the behavior of our community and their way of thinking have changed. We can only thank you and pray for you.

Sameer

Thank you for your prayers and support. This enables me and our partners to bring life-changing impact on our communities.

“I used to live in fear and anxiety, but because of your programme my life is filled with joy and peace.” Voices we hear every day from people. Thank you very much for enabling us to do this work.

Focus on the hidden church November 1 - 7

Countless Christians must keep their faith a secret or face harsh persecution. In nations like these, churches meet in secret. Feba is committed to supporting hidden communities of believers, through culturally relevant audio content which encourages secret believers.

Sunday:North east Africa: Please pray for our partner’s Skylark projects in northeast Africa This project shares Christian audio content with a scattered, non-literate people group, encouraging isolated believers and reaching out to other listeners who are open to the Christian message.

Monday:North east Africa: Mobile phone use is increasing across Africa. Please pray for our partners’ efforts to use mobile phone technology to engage listeners and distribute good, Christian, audio material. Pray that more people will hear the good newsforthefirsttimeinthisway.

Tuesday:Central Asia: Our partner works within a very challenging context, to encourage believers and share the good news. Praise God for the continuing opportunity to be a part of his work in this sensitive part of the world. Pray for his blessing and favour on the team’s future plans.

Wednesday:Central Asia: Please pray for the security situation in Central Asia. It’s common for anyone suspected of being a Christian

to be subject to surveillance and governmental tracking. Please pray for divine protection for our partners and other believers.

Thursday:Arab women: The Landais project exists to engage women living in Arabic-speaking regions, build relationships and discuss faith with them. The Landais team launched a new website earlier this year, with improved security. Pray that theaudiencewillfeelmoreconfidentinengaging with the team through this site.

Friday:Arab women: The website also includes new audio segments, providing the audience with commentary on the topics discussed elsewhere on the site. Please pray that this audio content will bring the topics alive, and Arab women will learn how much God loves and values them.

Saturday: Yemen: Give thanks for Reality Church, our partner’s programme to provide fellowship for believers scattered throughout Yemen. Pray that God will use Reality Church to encourage isolated believers and draw in spiritual seekers.

Please pray

Monday:Seven UN human rights investigators said in July that the UN Security Council must intervene in Burundi to prevent mass atrocities and the risk of a regional conflict.Praythatadisasterwillbeavoided and a supernatural peace will come to Burundi.

Tuesday:Our partner, Great Lakes Outreach, working with the Christian Initiatives for Peace has been broadcasting messages of hope and peace to a fearful nation. Please pray for these messages to take root in listeners’ hearts and change the atmosphere within communities.

Wednesday:Pray that the organisations which form Christian Initiatives for Peace will continue to work in unity, and that the different church denominations also become a uniting force, inspiring the nation to strive for peace.

Thursday:There are many unsettling rumours and some churches have been contributing to their spread. Pray that the messages broadcast by Great Lakes Outreach will be heard by the local population and dispel the fear and misinformation so common in recent months.

Friday:Thank God for the team members of Christian Initiatives for Peace; for their courage in taking action in a highly unstable environment and for their wisdom in understanding what their compatriots need to hear.

Being salt and lightFeba India has a wide range of projects, reaching listeners throughout the country. There is also diversity in the content of Feba India’s work, with some projects specialising in overtly Christian messages and others focusing on listeners’ social and practical needs.

Sunday:Give thanks for the Hamari Beriyan projects, continuing to bring hope to vulnerable women in northern India. Praise God for the recent encouraging feedback from teachers in Uttar Pradesh, who have been listening to Hamari Beriyan broadcasts with their students. Standing firm*Iraq FM, our partner in an urban area of Iraq is still on air, showing great perseverance under huge pressure. The recent move to a new studio should provide the team with a safe and established base from which to continue their ministry.

Sunday:Thank God that Iraq FM is now broadcasting from its new studio. Give thanks that, after a few technical problems, the station’s signal is reaching all of its long-standing listeners. Monday: Please pray that the new site will be a place of security for the local team, and that they will be able to continue to bless their community in what are still challenging times.

Tuesday: The Iraq FM team have started a new feature, in which they invite one listener every week to come into the studio and be interviewed live on air. Pray that this will strengthen their relationships with listeners and the wider community, and that the team will be protected.

Wednesday: In the last year, the Iraq FM team has lost a number of staff and volunteers who have moved away in search of more secure places to live. Please pray for a new team of volunteers to be recruited

to help the hard-working core-team who have remained.

A light has dawned

‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darknessalighthasdawned.’Isaiah9:2(NIV)

Speaking to a nation living in darkness, Isaiah proclaimed a message of hope. Judah was condemned to exile, Jerusalem was destined for destruction, and the people’s whole sense of identity was to be left in shreds. They had every reason to despair. But Isaiah saw restoration and hope in Judah’s future. He also caught a glimpse in the far future of a saviour – a child who would bring God’s light.

Sadly, there are countless people in the world living in darkness, even today. I’m sure you don’t need me to name the different countries reeling from war, terrorism, disease and natural disasters. But I believe there is hope for individuals and countries in despair, and I believe God would have us declare that hope to them, just as Isaiah did to Judah. This is exactly what Feba’s global partners are doing. The Yemen Project is comforting andencouragingthosewhoareeithershelteringfromthebombsorfleeingthecountry. Our partner in Sierra Leone is enabling stunned communities to recover from Ebola. And of course, Afno FM is an integral part of the work of restoration in Nepal, following the earthquakes earlier this year.

Jesus’ coming into the world is a source of great hope for us, but we have a duty to pass on that hope – to declare it to those living in despair. May God give us all the boldness and the sensitivity to do just that, whether that’s in a warzone or with our next-door neighbours.

Tim Hollingdale is Support Development Director at Feba UK

Reflection

Thank you for praying for the situation in Nepal and particularly for Afno FM’s role in the rebuilding process after the earthquakes. In this kind of environment, progress is often slow, but, by the grace of God, Okhaldhunga and Afno FM itself are beginning to recover. See page 6 of voice to find out more.

A light for revelationI was attempting the Three Peaks Challenge with some friends; climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours. Around 4am, near the summit of Scafell Pike, dense fog suddenly came down. We stumbled on, but the fog was so thick and the darkness so complete that we couldn’t see more than a couple of yards in any direction. It was frightening and disorientating. It was only when the light of dawn came that we could see where we had ended up and where we needed to go.

Light reveals truth. In my case, daylight revealed the truth of my inept navigation. When Jesus is described as a ‘light’ in these verses from Luke, it means he reveals truth, too: the truth of who God is and how to live his way.

The birth of Jesus changed everything. Before this point in time, the Jews understood God as being for them and no-one else. Jesus exploded this way of thinking. Through him, anyone can know God, regardless of their nationality or background. Jesus came to reveal God’s truth to the whole world.

We can be part of this revelation, too. I love hearing about how Feba’s partners declare God’s truth fearlessly, and we can do the same. Through our words and actions, we can reveal God’s truth to our friends, our community and beyond. Particularly at Christmas, we have an opportunity to share the story of God coming into the world in human form, and to invite our friends to think over what this might mean for them. Let’s pray that God will reveal his truth through us.

Reflection

‘“For my eyes have seen your salvation… a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”’ Luke 2:30-32 (NIV)

In many church traditions January 1st is the day when we remember Jesus being taken to the temple on the eighth day after being born where Simeon, the prophet, first set eyes on Jesus. The story is told in Luke 2: 22 - 40.
