they were empowered before embarking on their missionary commission. in other words – despite being living witnesses to the risen Jesus, despite having heard Jesus’ teaching from his own lips – they still needed to be clothed with holy Spirit power.

And once they were filled with the holy Spirit, what a wonderful difference it made. in both words and works they presented the kingdom of god to men, women and children such that the church grew throughout the known world.

my prayer for the Church of england is that we might rediscover what it is to be ‘clothed with power from on high’. So as you join us in praying for the leaders and churches mentioned in this diary, will you ask god to fill each one with his holy Spirit? And will you pray that, being ‘clothed’, they (and we) might offer the good news of Jesus afresh in this generation.

thank you for your prayerful support.

John Dunnett general director

y godmother was a moravian missionary to tanzania (tanganyika as it was then called) in the 1960s

and 70s. for those of you unfamiliar with moravian history – they were originally a group of persecuted protestants who settled on the lands of Count Zinzendorf (in eastern germany) during the 1720s. they have become known in particular for two things: a commitment to prayer and a world impacting missionary movement.

in answer to their prayer, the moravians discovered the reality of what Jesus promised in luke 24 – they were ‘clothed with power from on high’ (luke 24:49). this propelled them to witness and mission all over the world – to Africa, the Caribbean, the far east and even the Arctic. they sent out lay missionaries (as well as priests), they were the first protestant presence in some countries, and they even allowed their young men to sell themselves into slavery to bring the gospel to those who were being sold as slaves in the Atlantic trade.

if there’s one thing above everything else that it would be good to pray for the leaders and churches mentioned in this prayer diary, it must be that they might be ‘clothed with power from on high’. in fact, not to do so would be to challenge Jesus’ own understanding of how we can be effective for the gospel. he told the disciples to wait until

ummer is here, and the first holiday of the season is upon us! Treginnis 1 kicks off the

Ventures and Falcons summer season on Monday. Around 20 children aged 8-11 from inner city Bristol will travel to the Pembrokeshire coast for a week of beach trips, outdoor adventure activities, bonfires, sports and crafts. They will be looking at the story of Noah and the life of Jesus and learning about their great worth in God’s sight. Overall leader Jane Gillis says: ‘Many of the children face very difficult situations in their daily lives. We are really looking forward to seeing them letting down barriers and just being children for a week. Thank you for praying for them! We would also appreciate specific prayer for the teenage helpers we are taking for the first time this year – we would love to see them flourish and grow in their new roles.’

e are expecting 36 young people on the Whitby Venture, including several who are travelling a

considerable distance to be with us: three from Belgium, two from Germany, one from Northern Ireland and one from Uganda!‘Our theme for the week is “outcasts.” We’ll be looking at various characters in the Bible who, despite being on the sidelines, were used by God in big ways for his purposes. We’ll be thinking about what this teaches us about God, and how it changes us as his children.‘We have lots of activities planned, including trips to the beach, spending time in Whitby in our dorm groups, cycling, a long walk and a visit to Flamingo Land theme park. There will be lots of craft and sport workshops on site too. We are really looking forward to spending time together as our Whitby family!’

ince its launch in 2004, Messy Church has proved phenomenally successful, reaching thousands of families who

As a mission agency, we at CPAS are keen to do all we can to equip leaders young and old to help those who attend Messy Church to move forward from simply enjoying being part of a creative community – engaging in the crafts, worship and fellowship – to becoming committed followers of Jesus Christ.’

or clergy, moving into a new role can be a crucial time in their ministry and can have a significant impact

on the churches they leave as well as their new parishes. Such a move only usually happens after several years, so this week we are piloting a new conference for clergy preparing to move to a new parish.Graham Archer, CPAS director of ministry, said: ‘There’s only one chance to make a great new beginning for you, for the church and for those who travel with you. This conference provides an opportunity for clergy to process the lessons of the past and implement a fresh vision for the future.’The conference runs from Monday to Thursday at Hothorpe Hall in Leicestershire. Topics covered will include advice on letting go of the old and taking up the new, gauging the heartbeat and priorities of a new place, and making the most of a fresh start.

e praise God that, in recent years, we have made significant inroads for the gospel in the local area.

We’re particularly excited about what God is doing through our ministries for children and young people. We run groups for people aged between 2 and 16, many of whom come from families who don’t go to church. This includes a toddler group, playgroup, after school clubs for primary and secondary school children and football and other activities in the local Jenny Lind Park. ‘It’s fantastic that we’ve established relationships with so many children and young people, but we would really like to see this to go further and see many more people becoming committed disciples of Jesus. Please also pray for our work with older people, and for those in our community who we are struggling to reach, particularly working adults.’

his week sees the second The Buck Stops Here event of 2015. This 48-hour conference will take place at

the Wilson Carlile College of Evangelism in Sheffield, and is specifically for church leaders who have just started (or are about to start) their first post of overall responsibility. Jonty Frith, rector of St Nicholas Bathampton, came on the last The Buck Stops Here conference in May. He said: ‘It was great to take two days out from the chaos of moving house and preparing for a new ministry to focus on God and his work in and through me and the churches I’m serving. He used the time and the input from wise and experienced leaders to boost my enthusiasm and sharpen my vision for the years ahead, so I went home refreshed and fired-up!’
