SUMMARY

▪ The recent earthquake has destroyed thousands of houses and structures and many need to be demolished and reconstructed.

▪ Currently, due to the slow debris management and lack of effective ideas for debris management it is one of the most burning topic post earthquake.

•DEBRIS•NON METAL

•BRICKS & CONCRETE

•REINFORCED CONCRETE

•WOOD

•PLASTIC

•GLASS

•TOXIC

•METAL•FERROUS

•NON FERROUS

PROJECT FLOWCHART

✓ IMPLEMENTING ‘3R’✓ ENHANCING EXISTING TECHNOLOGY✓ MAKING IMPACT

Page 4: Pratik gyawali htq 47

▪ The unmanaged demolition debris in the affected area made me figure out the possible solutions to it.

▪ Initially, I started out with dumping. But on brainstorming found it to be quite ineffective.

▪ Tried applying concept of 3R to the demolition waste and found the same way was used by Japan and even Haiti.

Page 5: Pratik gyawali htq 47

▪ Absence of existing debris processing industry in Nepal was the main challenge to make recycling applicable in Nepal’s context

▪ So, We will be working with the existing local technology viz. Crushing, wood processing and rod manufacturing company

▪ This project will enhance the existing local technology

▪ Due to this step there will be decentralization, employment opportunities as well as uplifting the standard of these industries.

DEBRIS END RECYCLED PRODUCT USES

Cement and Bricks Fine aggregate, Coarse aggregate and Powder

• Structural and non structural products• Base layer of roads• Coarse aggregates can be used to make revetments•Economical Retaining walls• Mineral admixture to increase durability and strength

Wood Wood Panels, Pallets, blocks and Chips

• Wooden panels can be used in furniture and structures•Wooden chips can be used to make chipboard and plywood• Chips can be used as bedding products• Good source of fuel wood• Soil remediation

Metal Billets and ingots can be further processed into rod, sheet, wires etc

• Steel produced from the metal scraps has variety of application• Metal castings can be made• Tubes and wire from extrusion of billet have huge application•Recycled sheets from rolling of ingots can be used in construction etc.

•FEASIBILITY•FUNCTIONAL•1. The function that we are performing i.e. Reuse and Recycle of debris is practically possible

•2. However ,direct Dumping is not possible•TECHNICAL•1. Land availability for collection•2. Use of Existing structures•3. Manpower availability•4. Project operates even in Harsh condition

•FINANCIAL•1. Joint venture will make the process financially feasible•2. In Long run the project pays off •3. Reusing and reprocessing waste is more beneficial than making things from scratch

•SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL•1. Co-operation from people as their problem is bring addressed

•2. Decentralization makes the project more feasible•3. A green and sustainable project as we are promoting 2R

IMPACTS OF THE PROJECT✓ On local level Project Sadupayog will have

following impacts;✓ The first direct impact of the project is clearance

of the debris✓ Huge amount of employment opportunities will

be generated✓ Most importantly, we will be obtaining raw

materials for the construction and development✓ Uplifting the existing industries and skills of

people i.e. Technological and skill transformation

✓ The project will set up a new atmosphere of business. People will start trading recycled and reclaimed materials

✓ Reduce dependence on fresh material extraction thus protecting environment

Page 10: Pratik gyawali htq 47

▪ Socially, the project will be a common platform to solve the society’s problem. People will work together for a cause thus promoting unity in the society.

✓ On Global level, this project will set an example in the whole world and will draw attention of investors and donors.

✓ The project is targeting the valley and other urban and sub urban area

✓ The project will have long term impacts. This will be an evergreen sustainable project as construction and destruction is continuing cyclic process. Even after the debris of the earthquake is managed this project will not have to shut down. It will go on forever as a C & D waste management project and will assist in the development of Nepal
