“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall\ judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in sea-son, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.... “ (2 Timothy 4:1,2,3a).

What great responsibility given to pas-tors. It’s not easy being a pastor. The account-ability alone before the Lord is overwhelming. “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” (Hebrews 13:17).

Can you imagine the responsibility given to “watch” for the souls of the people (the church), and then give account of it before Christ of your salvation. ManŠ Just thinking about that gets overwhelming to me. But, that’s exactly what a pastor must do. Besides the studying and preaching of the Word, the care and watch for their souls, and being a servant with kindness to all. That’s a tall order, but that’s what a pastor who receives the ‘call’ of God must do in order to fulfill the great commission from Jesus Christ.

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. (1 Timothy 5:17) October is Clergy Appreciation Month. How can we honor our pastors? It is more than shaking their hands after church on Sunday morning. It goes far beyond the Sunday morn-ing experience. Pastors labor day in and day out to make sure we have what we need to make it spiritually in this life.

In closing, I would like to share spe-cial Appreciation to my first pastor, my Dad,

Rev. Ivory J. Payne of Baton Rouge, LA. For over 38 years, I have

seen my father be a pastor through ‘thick and thin.² The many ‘baptisms, hospital visits, counseling sessions, jail house visits, the struggle with a wayward member of the church, seeing him smile through tears, at times, even being misunderstood, as well as through many moments of joy and happiness.

I would also like to appreciate and honor my pastors Apostle Rod Williams and Prophet-ess Taketa Williams who have been not only a strong voice and support to the mission of the Praise Reporter, but have shown by their lifestyle and actions a genuine undying love for my family and the families of United Min-istries Church in Columbus, OH and Jackson-ville, FL.

In addition, I would like to thank every pastor who saw the vision of Praise and chose to advertise your ministry. Not only have you assisted in carrying forth the God-given vision of Praise, but you have allowed us to make an impactful imprint on the community at large.

When you pray, remember our pastors and their families. There’s much to the ministry and there are many out there who have left the ministry because of the pressures and stress. The weight of pastorship is heavy, but with your prayers our pastors will build healthy churches that will provoke a revolution that will change our communities for the better forever.

Church Safety and Security Seminar offered ... In response to an alarming increase of violence in places of worship, Sheepdog Ministries is offering a Church Safety and Security Seminar on “Keep-ing Your Congregation Safe in an Unsafe World”. The seminar is being held on Saturday October 10, 2009 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Emmanuel Faith Com-munity Church, 639 East Felicita Avenue, Escondido, California.

Principal and Athletic Director cleared in Florida prayer case... September 17th

after an all-day hearing, Santa Rosa County, Florida, Principal Frank Lay and Athletic Director Robert Freeman were cleared of criminal contempt charges that arose from the simple blessing of

a meal. When they heard the decision, tears of joy and cheers swept through the throngs of people who had waited outside in the rain for over ten hours.

Americans are Splitting Their Church commitments as They Search for Something Deeper... A recent Barna sur-vey finds that 10% of adults surveyed attend a worship service in a home at least once a month. Ken Eastburn, founding pastor of The Well, a church birthed in a building that tran-sitioned to network of home-based churches in Orange County, CA, says that statistic in-validates the idea that some Christians are house church Christians while other Chris-tians are conventional church Christians. “Christians sitting in a traditional bricks and mortar church on Sunday morning are often the same ones strumming guitars in some-one’s living room Sunday afternoon.”

President Obama Receives a Popular Book and Prayer from Ken Qualls...

The president of the United States was one of only a few prominent Americans who received a copy of Thinking Out Loud [Xulon Press ISBN 978-1-60791-397-9], and the promise of prayer by its author Ken Qualls.

Qualls told Obama that he would pray that God would give him strength and wisdom to carry out his tremendous duties and responsibilities as president. He also encouraged the president to have the courage stand fast when he is right and to change course when he is wrong.

Just Thinking Out Loud is a compila-tion of articles that Qualls has written over the years. They are the thoughts and observations of a rural pastor on Christianity and life in general. It cov-ers such topics as loneliness, depression, hope, the Bible, knowing God’s will and more.

The author draws from his thirty years as a rural bi-vocational pastor. He doesn’t always say what people want to hear but people like what they hear. The response of one reader expresses the feelings of many: “I don’t always agree with him, but I enjoy reading his articles and he makes me think.” Qualls reflects: “I believe that people like what I write because they are tired of having cotton candy shoved in their faces and being told that ‘everything’s going to be all right.’ Life is tough and people are hurt-ing. They need real life solutions to real life problems.”

Baptist Convention picks new president... What started as a contro-versial week at the National Baptist Convention has ended with the election of favored Dr. Julius Scruggs as the board presi-dent.

Scruggs, of Huntsville, AL., ran opposed by Rev. Henry Lyons who garnered national attention several years ago when he was convicted of stealing millions of dollars from the NBC. After five years in prison, Lyons returned to mount an ill-fated cam-paign to recapture the presidency. A law-suit filed by Lyons delayed the conven-tion vote by one day.

Scruggs has served the convention as its Vice President at Large for the last eight years and came to the campaign for convention president with the full support and endorsement of Dr. William Shaw, his predecessor. A little more than 5000 votes were cast with Dr. Scruggs offi-cially receiving 4086 ballots. Rev. Lyons acquired 924 ballots in his failed bid to capture the presidency.

Some parents and politicians say television commercials during profes-sional sports games focus too much on drugs, sex and alcohol.

So a California media monitoring group wants pro sports to police them-selves for the sake of the children.

According to the Associated Press, San Francisco based Common Sense Media found the number of TV ads sell-ing erectile dysfunction drugs and beer led commercials touting junk food dur-ing pro football and baseball telecasts.

And it’s got parents and politicians worried about harm to young viewers.

One lawmaker concerned about the issue even introduced a bill that would limit ED ads to nighttime.

Mike Steyer, who taught law at Stan-ford University said “Parents should be able to watch a football game with their kids without having to either mute the television or explain the side effects of a

life enhancement drug.”“We follow the lead of our broad-

casters as it relates to ads, yet we are always sensitive to the opinions of our fans,” said MLB spokesman Matt Bourne.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, in an e-mail after the league’s opening week, wrote that “we are comfortable with our policies and those of our net-work partners.”

Drugs, Sex, Beer And Football: Parents want more family friendly commercials during sports programming.

E D U C AT I O N T I P SAs we celebrate our months anniversary of being “back to school” , I would like to share a few suggestions for with you to help your student get off to a great school year:1. Your interest in their success is so important-make time every evening to have a conversation with your child stu-dent about school. Discuss their dreams and their talents and help them set goals to get there.

2. Your praise and encouragement goes a long way. - the balance of discipline is affirmation when your student meets your expectation. Phrases like “ that is wonder-ful” , I am so proud of you, and I knew you could do it” areimportant elements that build self esteem and confidence in your child.3. Build a relationship with your childs teacher-being approachable, supportive, and available are great quali-ties that will help you build a great partnership. As a constant teacher in your childs life, your interest and effort to communicate with the teacher can take place before an issue arises. A friendly letter or card to the teacher ensuring your support of her efforts is a way to reach out even when your schedule does not permit you to make a visit.

Bishop Timothy J. Clarke may be found preaching and teaching from the pulpit of First Church of God or perhaps speaking up for a community cause at a Columbus City Council meet-ing. “My heart is filled with a desire to help people. The one thing I’ve always wanted to do is to lift people to another level,” Clarke shares. “The apostle and the prophet are always sent to speak truth to power. We’re the ones sent to the ‘king.’ You have Jesus before Pilot, Paul before Agrippa and Elijah before Ahab. God has anointed me to do the same in Columbus.”

Although officially called to minis-try in 1974, Clarke was sure of his call long before then. “I never remember a time when I didn’t know I was going to be a preacher,” he reflects. “When I turned 18, my mom gave me a card with a letter in it, explaining that she had asked God for a son whom she would give back to him. Mom said, ‘That’s why I named you Timothy, which in Greek means to honor God.’”

This Brooklyn-born New Yorker, who grew up in Far Rockaway, New York, was surrounded by cleric men-tors. The late Dr. James Cray was his pastor, spiritual father and mentor. “Daddy Cray, Pop Kelly and Pop Scott showed me what ministry was all about.

They modeled commitment, loyalty and integrity,” he says.

Clarke received a Master of Divin-ity degree from the Southern Califor-nia School of Ministry in Los Angeles. His honorary degrees include a Doc-tor of Divinity from Mid-America Bible College, in Oklahoma City; and a Doc-tor of Law from Southern University School of Ministry. In 2001 he was con-secrated to the office of bishop and cre-ated the Berean Fellowship of Churches, which comprises 30 churches of vari-ous denominations. Additionally, he has authored nine books.

After becoming senior pastor of First Church of2 God in February of 1982, Clarke received a vision. “I came to Columbus to be a faithful pastor. I had no idea what would happen. Well, one day I was in prayer after we had built the new building on Wilson and Fair, and God spoke a line to me clearly: ‘No more hundreds but thousands,’” he recalls.

Under Clarke’s leader-ship, a larger facility was built at 3480 Refuge Road and today First Church has more than 5,000 members on its roll. The ministry functions through two enti-ties –First Church of God and City of Refuge Point of Impact (CORPOI). Clarke

explains, “The church is set up for the spiritual work and CORPOI is estab-lished to do ministry in the market-place.”

Currently, Mount Carmel is prepar-ing to break ground for a new health clinic on First Church’s land. The Millen-nium School (K-8) is now open and they are working on a housing development project with Columbus Housing Part-nership. Also, the ministry encompasses the Manna Café and a fitness center.

Looking ahead, Clarke shares, “I still want to build a 3,500-seat sanctu-ary and add more staff. My goal is to build people to maturity; believers who are fully devoted to Jesus Christ. I plan to someday handoff the ministry to a younger leader. The only way you have success is to have a successor. It’s gen-erational.”

Clarke and his wife, Clytemnestra, have two daughters, Dionesha Clarke-Logan (Ocie) and Joscelyn, and one grand-son, Ryan Joseph.

places to worsHIp

I recently went behind bars, not for a crime but for charity. My bail was set at thirty-two ($3,200.00). However, there was a catch: in order to get out I had to help raise funds for

Muscular Dystrophy Association through pledges and donations. Through the gen-erosity of caring friends and co-workers, I managed to raise slightly over $350.00 for MDA. Although I did not receive the support I expected, I am grateful for those who supported me. I fully understand the need to be selective in contributing to worthy causes. Many charities are com-peting for fewer dollars and we must choose our favorites from among a myr-iad of charitable requests.

As I mulled over the lack of support I began to reflect on how it might feel to sit in jail, knowing you are innocent, but at the mercy of others in a sometimes flawed legal system. This in turn led me to reflect on the ultimate injustice, the tragedy and triumph of Jesus’ crucifixion and resur-rection. Jesus was nailed to a cross, not because he was guilty of any crime but because God had it all planned from the beginning. He knew that Jesus had to die so that he could defeat death and forever hold the keys to death and hell. God cre-ated us for his glory and He loved us too much to abandon his creation. The sacri-ficial shedding of blood was necessary in order to redeem man, to bring him back into fellowship with God, The Father. Our freedom was bought through the death of

Jesus because He was the sinless, living sacrifice. No one else was found worthy in heaven or in earth to negate the effects of the fall of humanity.

But, what if Jesus had decided He did not want to die for us? In the Garden of Gethsemane, he even asked The Father if there was any other way to save human-ity other than to die on a cross. What if He had decided he did not care about us enough to die for us, or what if he had disregarded His Father’s wishes? We know, however, that was not the case. As the second person of the Trinity, Jesus and The Father cared about the same things. The Father loved His creation; therefore, Jesus loved the creation just as much. He was the perfect sacrifice to save us because He was the only begotten son of The Father, the sinless sacrifice that was required to redeem man from his sin. He died to give eternal life to us.

I gained my release from the mock MDA Jail for a few hundred dollars. I had the option of refusing to go or I could have walked out with no repercussions whatsoever. Thank God, Jesus did not take the easy way out. He suffered the supreme sacrifice, but experienced the glorious resurrection, turning the whole world on its ear. The world has not been the same since.

Isaiah 52:3 states, “For thus says the Lord; you have sold yourselves for noth-ing, and you shall be redeemed without money.” We normally think of money

“Black Pearls” by Psalmist Doris Stokes

Have you ever wondered why it appears your prayers aren’t being answered or if God really ever hears you when you pray? Is He paying attention to you? I’m pretty sure all of us have experienced that from time to time;

however I’d like to share a few “Black Pearls” of wisdom with you if you think this is happening. Sometimes, you need to do a private “check” to make sure you aren’t doing anything to hinder your own prayers from being heard.

When you “praise” are you doing it to be seen, heard or noticed?...or are

you doing it from your inner-most being out of the deep desire to give Him praise He is more than worthy of, for how good He’s personally been irregardless of your personal circumstance and most impor-tantly just because He’s WORTHY of your praise?

See, all too often I’m afraid people have two extremely wrong perceptions about who the Father really is: He’s either viewed as the “Big Bad Man up there” with a hammer waiting to crack us against the head every time we do something wrong, or He’s the God that’s the “Sugar Daddy” just waiting to give us anything our hearts desire and whatever we want at our every whim. Actually Father God is neither. According to the Word, it is His good pleasure to bless us (Luke 12:32), He enjoys blessing our lives, even when we don’t deserve it, but He’s no fool! He con-tinually blesses us for others to see in plain

view when He sees that our lives are dedi-cated to Him, His purposes for our lives are being lived out and how we CHOOSE to live our lives in order for Him to gain glory from us in the earth. If He can trust the fact that He can use you, you can’t help but to continually be blessed! Obedience to Him and His Word also plays a big part in this as well. But if you are doing whatever you’re doing (supposedly for Him) to be seen, heard, to have your name called or recog-nized, for titles or position, etc. then your MOTIVE for giving God praise needs to be examined.

Pure praise or LEGITIMATE praise truly comes from the heart; down on the inside; not whether you do everything right in life or not. King David was heralded by God Himself as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22) and we all should know

Are You Sending Up Legitimate Praise?

How Much Are You Worth?“Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy. . .”- Psalms 107:2-3

*Eight-time Grammy nom-inated jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum will release the long-awaited third installment in his popular genre-bridging gospel jazz series this fall with a spe-cial package and unique online marketing campaign.

The Gospel According To Jazz: Chapter III will be avail-able November 17, 2009, in both a two-disc CD package and a special DVD. The project will be released by Whalum’s label Top Drawer Records and distributor Mack Avenue Records.

Unique to the concept of The Gospel According To Jazz is the fact that it brings jazz fans, gospel fans, and R&B fans together with those who are dedicated to Christ, and meets the listeners where they are spiritually.

In addition to Whalum, the celebra-tion features jazz keyboardist George Duke, vocalist Lalah Hathaway, guitarist Doc Pow-ell, vocalist Kevin Whalum, keyboardist/vocalist John Stoddart, percussionist Lenny Castro, and others.

Further, Whalum celebrates family as well as faith by engaging some other highly

talented relatives. In addition to his brother Kevin, the set features his uncle, singer and saxophon-ist Hugh “Peanuts” Whalum; his nephew, saxophonist Ken-neth Whalum III; his son, bass-ist Kyle Whalum; his nephew, vocalist Kortland Whalum; and his cousin, hip-hop artist Caleb Tha Bridge.

Recorded live in 2007 at the Reid Temple AME church

in Glenn Dale, Maryland – GATJ3 is a joy-ous concert of praise and worship, where Whalum takes listeners on a journey from spirituals through New Orleans jazz through modern jazz, R&B, hip-hop, reggae, blues, and gospel.

“It’s kind of a mini journey through the evolution of jazz to an extent,” Whalum said in an interview with JL Media Group, adding that “It documents the fact that gospel is not a recent collaborator with jazz. They started out together.”

In addition, the CD package includes a bonus track version of “You Are Every-thing” featuring Bishop T.D. Jakes and his wife Serita Jakes.

A member of my family is living an ungodly life and participates in behav-iors that are dangerous not only to them, but to me also. How do I protect myself and get them saved? If I report them to the authorities and they are put in jail my heart will be broken. However, I can’t let them do what they are doing, especially when its harmful to me? What should I do?

Sincerely, Queen R.

Dear Queen R,You protect yourself with Prayer and

the Word of God, but understand a per-son has to want to be saved to get saved as the old saying goes “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink it.” You can show and tell them about God’s grace, mercy, and love, but until they are ready to accept Him, you just have to keep praying. Your family member may have to fall to a very low place so that the only place to look is up to God. No matter how much we love

our families and them saved, God wants them saved more than we do. Sometimes we have to “let go and let God.” If they are hurting you physically or you are in a situation that YOU need help to remove yourself, then you have the right to leave Family or not. You are a valuable to God and no one has the right to hurt you. May God keep you in His Perfect Peace.

The H1N1 influenza is no Y2K scare of the turn-of-the-century computer catastrophe variety that was widely predicted, but proved baseless. Peter Livingston, executive pastor of Concord Baptist Church, Jefferson City, MO, says churches need to take steps against its spread, as reports nearly daily warn of the seriousness of H1N1, also known as swine flu.

“This disease is potentially very serious and we each should be disin-fecting our facilities on a daily basis to minimize our facilities from becom-ing places of transmission,” Livingston says. In making the warning, Livingston is taking off his church hat and speaking from his experience as a Registered EPA Pesticide Consultant.

He previously worked as CEO of an infection control research and develop-ment company whose early interests were in the area of viral influenza. “We invented and brought to market the first ever doctors office rapid flu test kit,” he says. “I have spent a lot of years study-ing, planning and preparing for flu in the public health arena. Now I find my responsibilities are more local, but no

less important.”Livingston explains the threat of

the H1N1 flu virus and why churches should be concerned about even the tak-ing of communion in an article appear-ing on the Web Exclusive section of Church Executive magazine, at www.ChurchExecutive.com. Church Execu-

tive is a business magazine for larger and mega churches and is available in print and digital versions by going to the Web site.

After describing the threat of H1N1, Livingston is quick to say that it is “not a foregone conclusion that we will have another pandemic” as occurred in 1918. “It is, however, a statement that the biology necessary for another flu pan-demic is present and it is a possibility that the impact of this form of flu in the coming year could mirror 1918, and it is therefore reasonable for us to take steps at whatever level of responsibility we have to care for those who entrust a part of their lives to us,” he says in the article.

Livingston goes on to share what churches can do to control infection, what it takes to disinfect surfaces, and dispels concerns that it takes too much time and money to take precautions for the safety of the congregation. At his own church of 1,100, they are treat-ing the facility walls and counters after every day’s activities, among other pre-cautions he lists.

Is H1N1 Flu ...Why Churches Need to Take Flu Seriously

King David made many, MANY mistakes in his life; everything from getting another man’s wife pregnant, then having her hus-band killed in order for him to cover up his sin, then lying to the prophet about what he had done. But have you ever wondered WHAT was it that God was so attracted to that kept Him going back time and time again to David?...because it certainly wasn’t David’s obedience to do everything God instructed Him to do.

The secret to God’s relationship with David was the sweet smell of David’s worship; the honesty of David’s praise! When David screwed up, God placed his sin right in his face and DAVID would “check himself” and REPENT unto God for his wrongdoing! King David wrote in one of my favorite Psalms “create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me!” (Psalm 51:10). Whew…now that’s pure…that’s sincere! David under-stood the precious relationship that kept him CONNECTED to God wasn’t worth losing by NOT repenting. His praise was always received by God because He would take ownership for his wrongs and then give God praise for allowing Him to see his error so that he could move beyond it! That’s so awesome to me, because all of us at some time in our lives should’ve experi-

enced this already. How many times have we done something that wasn’t the best thing to do, realized our wrong, apologized SINCERELY for it and felt freed enough to move on in spite of it?

See, God isn’t looking for PERFECT people without error; He knows He’d never find that anyway! He’s looking for a people who is hungry to carry His Spirit, His praise into the earth and spread His personality to those that don’t have it. Just as the enemy is “seeking whom he may devour?...” (1 Peter 5:8) …the Lord is look-ing for somebody He can use that will give Him LEGITIMATE praise without their hand out, without wondering if they’ll get the next title or position in church. LEGITI-MATE praise grabs God’s attention! Begin to praise Him by yourself or to others with-out looking for anything. Share the good-ness of God (your personal testimony) with someone who doesn’t know Him the way you do or may have a secret desire TO get to know Him. God does hear AND answer prayer, but wouldn’t you want to be ASSURED He’s listening to you? When you build your personal relationship with Him through giving Him the praise and the worship that He is due, BLESSINGS are automatic; Him hearing you is guaranteed; Him answering is bonafide! If you want

Legitimate Praise from page 8

when we think of purchases. However, Jesus bought our salvation, not with money but with blood. If we really focus on what it means to have been bought without money but with an unthink-able price, the blood of Jesus, we will be proud to stand up and boldly say, “I am redeemed of the Lord. He has redeemed my soul from the hand of the enemy.” Comments may be sent to [email protected].

Your Business Could Be

Here

(NAPSI)-It seems the U.S. economic recovery may be largely driven by small businesses.

The companies represent 99.7 per-cent of all employer firms in the U.S. and employ just over half of private-sector workers, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). But ana-lysts say the key to these firms’ success will be their ability to find funding dur-ing the coming months.

Small businesses and entrepreneurs typically need loans to finance new equipment, personnel, marketing and other matters. Such was the case for entrepreneur Dr. Justin Kim, whose eye care center was sorely in need of work-ing capital to increase marketing efforts. Like many other small-business owners, Dr. Kim took advantage of new loan provisions set forth by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. They eliminate some borrower fees on SBA’s

largest loan program--the 7(a) program--and increase guarantees up to 90 per-cent.

Analysts say the fee elimination means more capital will be available to businesses at lower costs, while increas-ing guarantee levels will help provide banks with the greater confidence they need to extend credit during the eco-nomic crisis.

Before the recovery act, a typical 7(a) loan of $300,000 carried a guarantee fee of between 2 and 3 percent. That same loan today, with the new 90 percent guarantee and the temporary fee elimi-nation, would save a borrower about $8,100. In total, the new provisions are expected to support approximately $8.7 billion worth of 7(a) loans.

Finding Financial SupportGenerally, SBA-backed loans pro-

vide a key source of financing for viable small businesses that have real potential but cannot qualify for loans from tradi-tional sources. The loans are provided and funded by participating banks and other lenders.

To borrow, a business must be estab-lished for profit and must also meet SBA’s size standards for a small business, among other requirements. To qualify for an SBA 7(a) guarantee, a small busi-ness must also meet the lender’s criteria and the 7(a) program requirements. In addition, the lender must certify that it could not provide a loan under the pro-posed terms and conditions without the

7(a) guarantee.

Help Where It’s NeededMany of the loans that SBA backs

go to underserved markets. In fact, the administration’s loans are more likely to go to a business that might be minor-ity owned, woman owned or located in an area with lower income and higher unemployment than conventional bank loans.

June Gold is one of the many female business owners who qualified for financing under the new provisions. The president of a software and program development firm, she was originally turned down for a $500,000 loan by a bank after her husband and company founder, Steve, suddenly died. The funding was denied despite contracts between Gold’s firms and two large pharmaceutical companies, leaving her in need of money to hire skilled staff and continue marketing her products.

Her luck changed when she chanced upon a workshop that directed her to a bank in the area that handles SBA loans.

“They found a way to make it hap-pen,” says Gold. With her $400,000 7(a) loan, she hired a seasoned salesperson and is expanding operations. Last year, her company posted $1.2 million in sales.

Lower PricesAny woman who has had to cut

back on her spending lately may be pleasantly surprised the next time she shops for clothes.

Stores such as Fashion Bug now fea-ture prices as much as $5 or even $10 lower than last year for the same or similar styles.

Responding to the economy and in an effort to pass the savings on to cus-tomers, the store has revamped its busi-ness model and streamlined its opera-tions.

As a result, the store’s everyday prices are like sales prices at most other stores.

One thing it has not skimped on is design. The store now has an in-house fashion design team, led by veteran retail design diva Kady Dalrymple.

New designs focus on outfitting, including accessories to make it easier for busy women to build their ward-robes head to toe.One Size Range

Virtually every store in America offers a separate size range and assort-ment for misses and plus. Fortunately, Fashion Bug, for example, is changing that.

Misses and plus customers now have a wider selection of styles in one

size range from 6 to 30. And they never pay more for a larger size, a claim many other stores cannot make.

It’s a welcome change for women who love to shop, making it easier to look stylish without breaking the bank. The store offers clothing for work, casual, active and dressy lifestyles.

A first time home-buyers is defined as s o m e o n e who has not owned a primary re s i d e n c e

in the last three years. If you qualify, there is still time to take advantage of the tax credit, worth up to $8,000. So if you and/or your spouse owned a home but sold it more than three years ago, you could still qualify. However, if you are married and your spouse has the home in their name only you will not qualify for the tax credit. You can-

not purchase a home from your parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or your spouse.

Furthermore, you must reside in the home for three years after purchase as your primary residence. If you were to rent the home out, you will have to repay the government the tax credit you received this year. The income limit for a single person is $75,000 and for a married couple is $150,000. The credit is for 10% of the purchase price, up to $8,000. (For example, if you purchased a $75,000 home you would receive a $7,500 credit.) The credit reduces your tax bill or increases

your refund by the credit amount. The advantage of a tax credit versus a tax deduction is very signifi-cant.

Mandy Harless of Remax Impact Realtors says, “the Central Ohio mar-ket offers a wide variety of homes priced for most first time homebuyers. There is an opportunity to purchase a home before the Novem-ber, 30th deadline but buy-ers must act quickly”.

The loan process usu-ally take about 30-45 days to complete. It would be a good idea to be in contract to purchase a home no later than October 15th to ensure closing by the deadline. The

Columbus Board of Real-tor will host Super Sunday open house event on Sun-day, October 4, from 1-4pm, with up to 300 home priced below $125,000 at various location throughout the city. For more information about this event, you can contact the Realtor of your choice or the Columbus Board of Realtors at (614) 475-4000. Consult a tax professional to verify that you qualify for the $8,000 first-time homebuyer’s tax credit.

The secret is out about C.M. Grant Leadership AcademyBoth schools are managed by The Leona Group which was formed in 1996 by Dr. William Coats, a national leader in educa-tion reform. Foundational to The Leona Group is the belief that all children, regardless of ethnicity or economic status, can learn and achieve. For this reason, Leona Group schools are located almost exclusively in urban centers where there is the greatest need for educational choice and opportunity. Though Leona now manages almost 70 schools in five states, each school program is distinctive, designed to meet the specific needs of its community it serves.

For more information, contact Michelle Johnson, school leader, at 614.252.2087 or visit www.cmgrant.com. C.M. Grant Leadership Academy is sponsored by St. Aloysius.

Word is getting out about the high-quality programming at C.M. Grant Leadership Academy, 2030 Leonard Ave., Columbus. Perhaps one of Columbus’ best kept secrets in elementary educa-tion, the K-6 community school is now turning heads. Enrollment has more than doubled for fall, 2009, though the school remains committed to maintaining its small school size and nurturing class-rooms. Families are encouraged to apply for enrollment soon, as spaces are filling up fast.

Leading the charge is Michelle Johnson, who also serves as school leader at South Scioto Academy. Essential to both schools are car-ing teachers who provide every student with a program tailored to meet his or her unique needs. “We’ve been helping children who are below grade level, or those with various challenges, become proficient, and those who are at or above grade level excel beyond. The biggest challenge has been letting families know we are here!” explains Johnson.

A t C.M. Grant Leadership Academy, tomorrow’s leaders are developed through focused efforts and hard work in a structured environment. Each student is

provided with an individualized success plan, tailored to meet his or her individual needs. Our quality enrichment programs and committed staff make for a caring and nurturing environment, while our demonstrated, personalized attention ensures that No Child is Left Behind.
