Community Engagement: Annual Parent Night

Prairie View School’s School Community Council is pleased to support the staff of Prairie View

School by hosting our annual parents night/movie night for the entire community. The

community of Dalmeny is invited to attend Parents Night on Thursday October 22, 2015. Not

only are parents encouraged to attend, but so are other members of the community who are

interested supporting our children through bullying & conflict.

Beginning at 6:30 PM, students have an opportunity to watch the Dreamworks movie Home.

The price of admission is a parent/guardian. Chips and door prizes will be available, including

one lucky child who will win the DVD copy of the movie!

While the students watch the movie, adults will attend the workshop “Supporting Our Children

through Bullying & Conflict”.

Bullying and conflict are an ongoing issue for many of our

children. And while the schools attempt to provide as much

prevention programming as we are able, there are certain things we

can do as parents to better understand and support our children

navigate this experience. Darcey Rathgeber, Prairie Spirit School

Counsellor will be speaking to the differences between bullying and

conflict and how we, as parents can identify the differences. She

will also explore how best to support our children and build better

self-esteem, resiliency, social skills, and conflict resolution skills.

All of these are incredibly important as our children mature and try to navigate bullying and

conflict into their adult lives.

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHT: Grade 5/6Q

Wow, it is hard to believe we are already in the month of October!

The students are full of energy and are excited about what they will

be learning this year. We have talked about and began to work on

community building activities within our classroom. We have also

been talking about how significant our personal identities are in

both our health and art class. The students had the opportunity to

present their “All About Me Bags”, and draw an identity bubble in

order to share what makes each of them so special. We all had the

opportunity to learn more about each another, which has brought our class closer together.

These are some of the Grade 5/6 highlights (In their own words):

I enjoyed the line art; it is now my favourite art ever!

Genius hour is so much fun because we get to learn about whatever we want!

I really had fun doing the identity bubble because it was a way to express myself.

I like science because I get to learn how the body works.

I really enjoyed the science walk; it was cool to be out with nature.

I like gym because we have learned so much about soccer.

I really enjoy art class because I love to draw and make different things.

I enjoyed the identity art because I like to write about myself and drawing is fun.

I enjoy math because I am being challenged.

We are happy to be C.A.R.E buddies with Mrs. Boyko’s Grade three class and have enjoyed

reading some of their favourite books to each other, playing on the new playground, as well as

drawing self-portraits of one another. Both care buddies will be interviewing each other in order to

learn more about their interests, hobbies, and personality traits.

SOCCER TOURNAMENT THANK YOU Our 16th annual Grade 5 & 6 “Wild West Soccer Classic” on October 2nd was

a huge success! We had a total of 28 teams from Aberdeen, Borden, Hepburn,

Langham, Prairie View, Vanscoy, Venture Heights, Stobbart and Warman

participating on the 14 soccer fields we prepared.

Classroom Highlight: Gr. 3B

What a wonderful beginning to the school year. Grade three is wonderful and I am really enjoying getting to know all my new students. Our class has been busy working on many great things and the students wanted to share a little bit about some of the great ideas we’re learning about:

September we talked a lot about friendship and how to do what is right. We read

How Full Is Your Bucket and learned about doing good deeds to make others feel happy. Some quotes from students on friendship:

“Be we need to be kind to our friends” “No bullying allowed”

“Help each other out” “Say nice or kind words to each other”

In Health, we are learning about Thankfulness and Gratitude as we prepare for our Character Education assembly later

this month. Students are learning that “thankfulness is about being happy and appreciating all that you have”. The students are LOVING the Daily 5 literacy program in 3B. As the students said, “it’s all about learning how to be better

readers and writers”. Students are learning reading strategies to help them grow as readers while practicing their independence as learners. The kids have already built up their stamina and can read/write for longer periods of time. I

can see a real love of reading growing in our classroom and it is a beautiful thing. Here are a few thoughts from the students about Daily 5: “I love reading to someone because I get to share my ideas about the book with someone.”

“I like read to self because I really like to read.” “Working on words is the best because I am learning new words and it’s fun.”

3B is partnered up with 5/6Q for CAREbuddies this year. We have really enjoyed spending time reading with our buddies

and getting to know each other. Right now we are working on a get to know you project that included drawing a portrait of each other and doing a CAREbuddy interview. “CAREbuddies are so much fun!”

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK (October 5-9)

On Wednesday, October 7, Dalmeny Fire and Rescue presented at our school.

Before their presentation, we held a fire drill for the firefighters to observe, and

they were pleased with how quickly we completed the drill. We learned about the

importance of having a safe escape plan in case of a fire in our home and school,

saw the Dalmeny firefighters in their gear and learned about their equipment. We

also watched a short video about fire safety. As part of their presentation, they

invited all of the students to attend the information evening at the Dalmeny Fire

Hall. Thanks to Dalmeny Fire and Rescue!

CROSS COUNTRY 2015

“Running is so symbolic of life. You have to drive yourself to overcome

the obstacles. You might feel that you can’t. But then you find your inner strength, and realize you’re capable of so much more than you

thought.”- Arthur Blank

This year’s cross country team consisted of 18 students in grades five and six. The

team was made up of nine girls and nine boys. The team met to practice before

school or during recess breaks. The team ran two or three kilometers every day

and all of the practice really paid off. The student’s times greatly decreased and

we saw great improvement in both technique and ability to keep their run at a

strong and steady pace. The year culminated with a meet in Delisle on October 7th.

What a beautiful day to run and it showed as the kids all did an exceptional job!

Everyone ran some great times and we are very proud of all the runners and all the

hard work they put into their training. It was a great day, a wonderful season and a

terrific group of kids to work with!

EDUCATION WEEK

Education Week is October 19-23 and the theme for Education Week this year is

“Celebrating Each Student”. We have many exciting activities taking place during the week,

these include:

- Celebrating Me – Care Buddy Portrait Activity (Monday or Tuesday)

- Scholastic Book Fair (Buying Days: Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday)

- Show & Share Morning (Thursday morning)

- Terry Fox Windup Assembly (Thursday at 1:00pm)

- Family Reading Time (Friday from 11:50-12:30)

We hope to see many parents and community members at Prairie View School throughout the

week as we celebrate and learn about each other!

“Silly Monsters: Frightfully Good Reads!”

Our first Scholastic Book Fair will be held October 20 –

22, and will be open for purchasing during school hours.

Each classroom will have a chance to visit the Book Fair

during the school day and make purchases if they wish.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for volunteers to help shelve books, prepare books for circulation

(laminating and mactac) and to help out during book fairs. Any time you have

available, even an hour a week, two weeks or once a month would be appreciated and

helpful. Please call the school or stop in at the library and see Mrs. Fisher if you

are interested in volunteering.

COMING SOON: Get Ready to Read, Read, Read!!

Look for information coming home on October 23 about a school wide reading

contest. The reading event will start on October 23 and run until November 20th.

Information will also be displayed outside the library.

How to Tell the Difference Between Conflict and Bullying

Conflict is a normal part of life. And learning to deal with conflict helps kids master the social

skills they need.

But unlike conflict, bullying is not a normal part of life. It also is not a "rite of passage" like

many people believe.

There are some distinct differences between bullying and conflict. Being able to identify these

differences is important in knowing how to respond.

Characteristics of Peer Conflict

There are a number of ways to identify conflict.

First, when a conflict occurs, both people involved have equal power in the relationship. And

while both people may be emotional and upset neither one is seeking control or attention. They

just happen to disagree.

Also, when people experience conflict they often feel remorse and take responsibility for their

actions. They want to solve the problem so that they can start having fun again. Lastly, conflict

happens occasionally and is usually not serious or emotionally damaging to either person.

Characteristics of Bullying

The best way to identify bullying is to realize that it is a deliberate act. The goal is to hurt, insult

or threaten another person. There’s also an imbalance of power in the situation. Bullies exert

control over other people either by intimidating them, insulting them or threatening them.

Bullying also is repeated and purposeful. And it poses a threat of serious emotional or physical

harm.

Typically, there is very little remorse from a bully. Meanwhile, the target is usually visibly upset.

Additionally, bullies may get satisfaction from hurting people. And there is no attempt to resolve

anything. Bullies are not interested in having a relationship with the intended target.

Keep in mind though that not every hurtful action is bullying. Sometimes it is simply unkind

behavior. So be sure you are aware of what constitutes bullying.

I will be doing a presentation for parents at the Oct 22nd SCC Meeting at 6:30pm in the school

library regarding this topic and how we can help support our children through both conflict and

bullying. All are welcome! I hope to see many of you there!

DRESS-UP DAY

On Friday, October 30, we are having a Dress-Up Day for Halloween.

Students may come to school wearing a costume of a favorite character. We ask that

students not bring any toy weapons to school.

INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE INSURANCE

Prairie Spirit provides accident insurance through Industrial Alliance Insurance that provides

insurance coverage if your child has an accident at school during the school day. Children are also

covered if the accident occurs at a time when they are involved in any extra-curricular activities

before or after school hours, including school trips. In the unfortunate circumstances of needing this

insurance, the school will need to be notified of the accident immediately so that they can submit an

incident report to the insurance company and provide the parent or guardian with a claim form. The

parent or guardian will need to pay any expenses initially, then ask the appropriate medical authority

to complete and sign the form. The parent will then submit the form directly to Alliance Insurance.

The claim process is between the parent or guardian and the insurance company.

Industrial Alliance Insurance does offer additional KidsPlus Accident Insurance should you wish to

purchase it. Details can be found in the KidsPlus Accident Insurance Package.

Please Remember: All of our school entrances except for the main front office entrance, are locked between 9:05 a.m. and 2:55 p.m.

If your child is going to be late arriving at school, please remind them to use the office front doors. We also ask that all guests and visitors to the school

please report to the office upon arrival.

DALMENY POLICE SERVICE

We have a new group of crossing guards, working the intersections

of Ross Ave and 1st Street as well as Ross Ave and Prairie Street.

Some training was done in June with a refresher course when school

commenced in September. Our new group consists of volunteer grade 5 & 6 students.

Safety of pedestrians using the cross walks, as well as the crossing guards, are

paramount. All motorists are asked to follow directions and not proceed through the

intersections when the crossing guards are on the street. With the approach of winter,

motorists are reminded that the intersections become icy from frequent stops and

starts, primarily at the 4-way stop intersection at Ross Avenue. Please use caution when

approaching this corner when crossing guards are on the street.

A charge for failing to yield to a person in a crosswalk can be laid against violators under

the Traffic Safety Act. These are our children doing an important public safety function

for our children twice a day. Your cooperation, patience and attentiveness will be greatly

appreciated.

STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP

Before the first day of school, we sent an email letter in the interest of student

safety about parent drop off and pick up at the school. Thank you for your

cooperation in not parking on the north side of the school. Alternatively, use

Prairie Street across from the front of the school or Ross Street or Prairie Place.

All foot traffic must cross at the crosswalk where the crossing guards are. After

school parents may also park on Prairie Street in front of the school once the

buses leave at approximately 3:10 p.m.

We also want to remind students to never cross through the parking lot. Students

should follow the sidewalk on the north side of the school or use the cross walk.

Community News:

The Dalmeny Community Church will be hosting a Community Clothing Exchange October 20,

21 and 22nd! This is an opportunity for our community to hand down any gently used clothing

items for babies, children, youth or adults.

On Tuesday October 20th and Wednesday October 21st bring any clothing, accessories and

footwear to the Dalmeny Community Church between 5 -7pm.

The church will be open Thursday October 22nd from 5-9pm to “shop” and take home “new

to you” clothing items. Please know that you are welcome to come on Thursday even if you did

not have any items to donate.

We are in need of volunteers to help sort on the 20th and 21st as well as pack up any leftovers

Thursday evening and possibly Friday morning.

Lastly please help us get the word out and invite your neighbours and friends!!
