Prairie Horizon Agri Energy
Prairie Horizon Agri Energy
• Located in Phillipsburg Kansas – North Central Ks
• Nameplate 40 million gallon plant
• We grind Milo and Corn
• Began operations in 2006
• Paid off in 2013
Innovation Drives Opportunities
• Early in the process we looked at the basic changeso Yeast Trials
o Enzyme Trials
o Process Changes and procedural changes
o Textbook Changes
• New Vendors brought different ideas to try
• We looked at a lot of different ideas
• Our goal was to define “Bio-Refinery” and no longer
be an ethanol plant
Trial and More Trials• Over time we got comfortable with existing
traditional changes and got good at it
• Other Companies began to bring there ideas to the
table for trials, and from this we learned a lot
• The Trick - Keep good records of the trials, you do
your own analysis of the results, and confirm
weather or not you agree with Vendor Results
• We felt learning to Trust our own Data was a key
What Worked for PHAE• Switched to an enzyme that allowed us to STOP
using NH3
• Use Scientek Technology to enhance Enzyme
activity
• Installed a WB Services “Precondenser” to remove
alcohols out of the CO2 before the scrubber
• De-superheat Evaporator 4 ethanol vapors
• Reconfigured Heat Exchangers
• Have the ICM Corn Oil separation
• Installed the ICM SMT system
Renewable Diesel
Green Energy PartnersSedgwick Kansas
Green Energy Partners
Green Energy Partners
Why Renewable Diesel• Knowledge of the Design Builder WB Services
• First plant was to be built (now completed) in
Sedgwick Kansas – Green Energy Partners
• Produces 3 million gallons of Renewable Diesel/Yr.
• Use Plant One to prove technologyo Prove by Third Party Analysis we are making Diesel Fuel
o Prove the pathway for EPA
o The technology works (makes financing easier if technology proven)
• Give us another avenue for our Corn Oil
• Advanced Fuel
• Easily Expanded
Expected Returns• For every 100 gallons of corn oil processed:
• Produce 90 Gallons of Diesel Fuel (Renewable)
• Produce 8-9 Gallons of Other Fuels
• Remaining Gallons are Water
• Other Fuels are Low BTU propane and Naphtha
which will be used in the existing Ethanol Plant
• No Waste – Excess Steam produced goes back to
existing plant
• Exothermic Reaction – Generates Heat
Financial Return• Price of Renewable Diesel will price with Heating Oil
plus value of D4 Rin
• Our Performa shows a payout in 3-5 years
depending on market conditions as always
• Create 9 new jobs for the area Day 1
Conclusion• There are just a lot of neat ideas out there
• Always a better mouse trap
• Prairie Horizon decided to go the Bio Refinery
direction
• Currently we are working on ways to reduce distillers
grain production and use that material for other
higher margin opportunities.
