Did you know that...◗ Prague Spring
On the 12th of May, the international music festival
Prague Spring begins. This year’s 66th annual event
will feature the works of conductor and composer
with Czech roots Gustav Mahler. Visitors can look for-
ward to an extradordinary line-up of symphony
orchestras. The Berlin Philharmonic with conductor
Sir Simon Rattle and The New York Philharmonic
under the leadership of Alan Gilbert will both perform.
Also playing will be the famous San Francisco Sym-
phony and Michael Tilson Thomas, who last year
finished a complete recording of Mahler’s sympho-
nies, for which he has received critical acclaim.
A special guest at the festival will be actor, director
and producer John Malkovich. He will play the pro-
tagonist in the original musical ballad The Infernal
Comedy, which combines the true story of an Austrian
serial killer with the music of Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart
and Vivaldi. The festival also welcomes American so-
prano Dawn Upshaw, a four-time Grammy winner. Her
recital will be accompanied by pianist Gilbert Kalish.
The festival will last until 4 June. www.festival.cz
◗ Church Night
On 27 May in the evening and night hours the next
annual Church Night will take place. Once again, the
gates of churches, monasteries, temples and chapels

then from there spread all over Austria. It has been
held in the Czech Republic since 2009, when its
first year involved churches and houses of prayer
in the Pilsen, South Moravia, Central Bohemia and
Highlands Regions, and since 2010, has been held
nationwide. Church Night is accompanied by a rich

When you visit the historical complex at Vysehrad,
don’t forget to go round to the interesting case-
ment area. Casemates were corridors in the ram-
parts of fortresses which served as a transfer point
or gathering place for soldiers. The order for the
construction of the Vysehrad casemates came from
the Frenchman General de Berdiquier in the year
1742. In the year 1744, near the end of The Prussian
Wars, the casemates and almost the whole of Vyse-
hrad were levelled when barrells in the corridors
were filled with gunpowder and nearly blasted.
Fortunately, it didn’t come to this. The entrance
to the casemates is from The Brick Gate.
The casemates are found on both sides of the gates.
The length of both wings is nearly 1 kilometre, and
the corridors are roughly 2 metres high and 1.5 me-
tres wide. The right side of the casemates leads to
the underground hall called Gorlice. The hall covers
an area of around 330 square metres, is 13 metres
high and in the past served various purposes - as
a gathering place for soldiers, a store for munitions
and provisions, and later, as an air-raid shelter.
The area was reconstructed and has been open to
the public since the 1990s. Six original statues from
The Charles Bridge are currently on display here
a sculptural group of the Madonna and St. Bernard,
statues of Sts. Augustine, Nicholas Tolentinsky,
Vojtech, Anna and a sculptural group of St. Ludmila
with a young Wenceslas. In the spring and summer
months, the Gorlice hall is used as an untraditional
exhibition hall and a place for unusual theatre
projects. www.praha-vysehrad.cz
The building comprises offices, a luxury café and
a restaurant. Located on the top of the Dancing House
is “Medusa” – a round metal structure with the diam-
eter of 7 metres which communicates with the cupola
on the Gothic tower of the nearby Mánes building.

The Dancing House
The Vysehrad Casemates
The Dancing House is a fascinating example of world-
class modern architecture in Prague. This remarkable
building is also called “Ginger and Fred”, according to
the shape of its two towers, inspired by the celebrated
dance pair Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The Dancing
House stands on Rašínovo nábřeží (Rašín embankment)
on a site that was vacant from 1945 until the early
1990s. The project gave rise to great controversy and
a passionate debate about architecture in Prague.
Today, the Dancing House is an integral and much
admired landmark of the city. Construction work on
the Dancing House was launched in 1994 and was
completed in 1996. The building was designed by
the American-Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry and
the Czech architect of Croatian origin Vlado Milunič.

The Křižík Fountain (Křižíkova fontána) is an illumi-
nated fountain located in the Exhibition Grounds
in Prague-Holešovice. It was built by the Czech engi-
neer and inventor František Křižík at the end of the
19th century on the occasion of the anniversary Ge-
neral Provincial Exhibition in 1891 and is still a tech-
nical wonder. While in the 19th century the fountain
was illuminated by 50 coloured spotlights, today,
more than a century later, we can marvel at a unique
play of light emanating from 1,300 underwater
spotlights, projection of images on the water curtain
and water surface and laser effects. Visitors can select
from a wide range of performances – the most beau-
tiful classical music melodies, ballet, modern dance
or pop and film music shows.
The fountain shows take place all year long, apart
from in the winter months.

Kampa is a unique city island in Prague, which com-
bines the ancient history of the city with modern art.
This charming artificial island lies in the heart of the
city on the Vltava river in the Lesser Town quarter,
from which it is separated by a man-made canal called
Devil’s mill. Kampa is one of the most beautiful and ro-
mantic parts of Prague. Here you will find picturesque
corners, beautiful buildings with a historical and cultur-
al tradition as well as Green Park, which attracts visitors
to sit and relax from the busy streets of Prague.
The first mention of Kampa comes from the year
1169. In the Middle Ages only gardens were found on
the island and from the 14th century construction of
mills began. Some of them can be seen on the island
today, though no longer fully functional. One mill is
Devil’s Hut in the canal It was originally Baroque, then
rebuilt after fires in the 1950s. The most famous is
Priory Mill the only surviving Renaissance mill from the
16th century, with a large wooden wheel. Another mill,
built at that time directly on the Vltava, is Sova mill,
named after Václav Sova, who owned the mill in
the 15th Century. Four hundred years later the family
bakery known as Odkolek took over and ran the mill.
In 1896, the building partially burned. Since the
reconstruction, in 2001 it has housed The Kampa Mu-
seum, which contains a collection of modern Central
European art. It is run by Jan and Meda Mládek, Czech
collectors and art patrons.
Kampa´s romantic atmosphere has enticed a number
of major Czech personalities to live here. Famous
Czech playwright, novelist and actor Jan Werich,
The Křižík Fountain
City island Kampa composer Bohuslav Martinů, artist Jiří Trnka, the poet
Vladimír Holan and philologist Josef Dobrovský all
had houses here.
The most popular sight is called The Lennon Wall,
where people from all over the world pay tribute to
the murdered member of The Beatles’ John Lennon.
A campaign was launched in 2010 and Kampa
was ranked the 2nd most beautiful and tourist-
grateful island in the world. The rankings, com-
piled by the prestigious VirtualTourist Traveller
site, placed it just behind the Isle Saint Louis in
Paris.
On Kampa Island can be found the shortest
street in Prague, called George the Red Street,
which measures only 27 meters.

Josip Plečnik in Prague
also been architecturally blended with new features,
the most signifiant of which is a granite obelisk. On the
northern edge of the Upper Deer Moat Plečnik had
a terraced vineyard constructed with a view for Masaryk.
On George of Poděbrady square in Vinohrady is
Plečnik’s second work in Prague - the monumental
Church of the Sacred Heart. This modern sacred build-
ing, constructed between 1928 - 1932, was ranked
among the nation’s cultural monuments in 2010.
The church is a hall-like structure with a rectangular
plan and a 13-meter high flat coffered ceiling. It has
a 42-metre-high southern European style tower, which
is topped by a 3-meter-high copper dome and a 4-me-
ter-high cross. The dominant feature of the church is
a circular tower clock 7.6 meters in diameter, which
transmits light. The facade is ornate, and partially con-
sists of coated brick with light projections, while the in-
terior is composed mostly of red brick. On the front are
three huge portals. In the cellar there is a chapel with
a barrelled vault. An interesting feature of this church
is that it has no pulpit.
Josip Plečnik´s buildings are characterized by moder-
nity, but they conceal heritage and tradition. While in
Prague do not miss the chance to see these remarkable
works of architecture.
This notable Slovenian architect left a distinct
mark on Prague, one that lovers of architecture
would definitely not miss. Plečnik was one of the
most important European architects of the first
half of the 20 century, and his style was easily
recognizable and original. In Prague he realised
two great projects - the reconstruction of Prague
Castle and the design of the Sacred Heart Church
in Vinohrady.
In 1920, the study Plečnik succeeded in altering the
southern gardens of Prague Castle and gradually re-
ceived more and more orders for alterations. At the re-
quest of president T. G. Masaryk, he became the official
castle architect. He participated in the renovation and
reconstruction of the Prague Castle, which, in its new
form was designed to serve as a symbol of statehood
as well as the seat of the President.
Plečnik joined Garden of Eden Square with the
Hradčanská monumental staircase and placed a huge
granite bowl in the centre of the garden. He joined the
rampart garden with the third courtyard’s so-called
„Bull Staircase“. He also lowered the surrounding wall
in order to make possible a view of Prague. Important
points emphasized architectural features, eg. gazebos,
columns, pyramids and the panoramic terrace. Plečnik
had the first courtyard re-tiled and placed a pair of
flagpoles in front of the St. Matthew Gate. In the west
wing of the New Palace he created a pillared hall as an
entrance area for visitors to the castle. The third and the
main courtyard which has also received new tiles, has

Baroque PragueDuring the Thirty Years War, which took place in
the 17th century, a new architectural style called
Baroque appeared in the Czech lands. At that
time prominent architects from across Europe,
especially from Italy and Germany, were concen-
trated in Prague. They can be credited with many
wonderful and richly decorated churches, palaces
and houses.
Monastery complex LoretoOne of the most remarkable sights is the Prague
Baroque monastery complex, Loreto. This pilgrimage
site was founded during the Thirty Years War as
a symbol of the victory of the Catholic Church in the
Czech lands. Within the walls of Loreto is the temple
of the Nativity, the essential feature of which is the
Holy House, which was meant to commemorate the
house where the Virgin Mary lived in Nazareth. In the
monastery complex, you can see a unique exhibition
of the temple’s treasures, including rare liturgical
objects. The most precious of these is the so-called
Prague Sun, a decoration in which more than six
thousand diamonds were used. One of the biggest
attractions is the unique Loreto chimes, composed
of twenty-seven bells that sound every hour from
eight am to six pm. Pilgrims visiting Loreto are taken
care of by the Minor Capuchin Order of Friars.
Church of St. NicolasAnother jewel of Baroque architecture in Prague
is certainly the monumental church of St. Nicholas
in Lesser Town Square, which is rightly considered
the most beautiful baroque church in Prague. Its
construction began in 1704 and over the years it was
worked on by leading architects the Diezenhofers
and later the famous Italian architect Anselmo Lu-
rago. Inside the temple you will notice the elaborate
ornamentation of Czech Baroque. A great ceiling
mural by Jan Lukáš Kracker, which is one of the larg-
est in Europe, features scenes from the life of St. Ni-
cholas, and the impressive frescoes in the cupola are
the work of Francis Xavier Palko. The temple is also
decorated with sculptures by Franz Ignaz Platzer.
It is worth noting that during his stay in Prague even
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played the organ. Classi-
cal music concerts are still held in the church today.
St. Matthew gateBaroque modifications, however, spared the most fa-
mous tourist attraction in Prague - Prague Castle. The
St. Matthew entrance gate is one of the first baroque
monuments in Prague.
Wallenstein GardenOne of the greatest examples of Baroque sculpture
is the Wallenstein Garden, part of Wallenstein Palace.
The exhibits include sculptures by Dutch sculptor
Adrien von Vries, who lived and worked in the court
of Emperor Rudolf II. The sculptor achieved fame
particularly through his sculptures of horses. The
sculpture group that Wallenstein had installed in his
garden was stolen by Swedish troops in 1648 during
the looting of Prague. They were later replaced by
realistic replicas.
Baroque statuesWhen exploring baroque Prague, you mustn´t forget
one of the most visited historical sites - the Charles
Bridge, which is a unique open air museum of thirty
mostly Baroque statues. The most famous is the
sculpture of Saint John Nepomuk.

(street frontage 2,25 m).
◗ the smallest rotunda – St. Longin´s Rotunda
(Na Rybníčku street).
◗ the oldest extant fountain – The Singing Fountain
(1564 – 68), it weights more than 5 tons.
◗ the oldest pipe organ – in The Church of Our Lady
before Týn (from the year 1673, its author was
German Hans Heinrich Mundt).
◗ the oldest brewery – U Fleků (founded 1499).

(around 29 ha).
◗ the biggest glockenspiel – The Prague Loretto
Carillon (27 bells).
◗ the highest edifice – Žižkov Television Tower
(216 m).
In Prague, the tradition not only of farmer’s mar-
kets, but also flea markets, which are an integral
part of most larger cities abroad, has been
revived.
A flea market creates an unrepeatable atmosphere
where goods which are not available in shops can
be found, goods which have a story and a patina of
the past. But it is also possible to buy new, original,
handmade products. At some stalls it is possible to
bargain, which is an attractive feature of shopping
for many.
This year regular flea markets will be held in two
places - the first, traditionally on Náměstí Míru
square, will take place from 9 to 4 every last Sat-
urday of the month beginning on 26 March and
the second, below the street ulice Pařížská by the
bridge Čechův most, will be held, with the excep-
tion of the last Saturday of the month, every
Saturday and Sunday from 2 April.

to the battle of Austerlitz, which took place there in the
year 1805. The French army, led by Emperor Napoleon
Bonaparte, was victorious over the allied forces of
Russian tsar Alexander the first and Austrian emperor

It has approximately 1.3 million inhabitants, on an
area of some 500 sq km (193 sq mi). The President
of the Czech Republic resides in the Prague Castle.
The office is currently held by Václav Klaus.
The official Czech currency is the Czech Koruna,
and Czech is the official language.
◗ There are three underground (metro) lines operating
in Prague – green (A), yellow (B) and red (C).
The metro system interconnects all the important
places around the city, with tram and bus connec-
tions to destinations where the metro does not reach.
The public transport network is reliable and covers
the city thoroughly. The metro operates daily from
5 a.m. to midnight, and to 1 a.m. on Friday and Satur-
day nights. After 1 a.m., public transport is secured
by night tram and bus lines.
◗ The central coach station in Prague is located at
“Florenc” (metro line C, station “Florenc”). The main
railway station is just next door (metro line C, station
“Hlavní nádraží”). Another important transport hub
is the Holešovice railway station (metro line C, station
“Nádraží Holešovice”).
◗ The majority of shops open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on
workdays. It is, however, easy to do one’s shopping
at weekends as well, primarily thanks to numerous
shopping centres (e.g. Palladium near metro station
“náměstí Republiky”, Nový Smíchov near metro sta-
tion “Anděl”, or Centrum Chodov at metro station
“Chodov”).
◗ Alcohol and cigarettes can be purchased at nearly
any grocery shop as well as at numerous specialised
outlets. Only those above 18 years of age may legally
drink alcoholic beverages in the Czech Republic,
while doing so in many public places around Prague
is prohibited and a finable offence. The most popular
beverage in the country is beer. The Czech Republic is
home to the best beer in the world. Numerous brew-
eries apply production technologies of longstanding
tradition and make beers with various degrees of
alcohol content in a broad range of tastes. A pint
(around half a litre) of beer costs around CZK 30 on
average.
◗ Traditional Czech dishes are a meal of braised
beef with cream sauce and bread dumplings and
roast pork with dumplings and cabbage, while the
traditional Christmas meal is carp. Main courses in
restaurants usually cost (depending on location)
from CZK 120 to CZK 300.
◗ Popular souvenirs purchased in the Czech Republic
include Czech cut glass, porcelain, traditional liquors
(Becherovka – herbal bitters, mead, Slivovice – plum
brandy), Bohemian garnets, amber, wooden ma-
rionettes, art and design pieces, folk art pieces,
spa wafers and typical spa drinking cups, etc.
