The first poems composed strictly in Czech, the Legends of King Wenceslas and Hospodine, pomiluj ny (Lord Have Mercy On Us), both date back to the 10th century.By the 13th and 14th centuries, Czech had become an accepted language for literature. Most popular poems were legends, epics, historical chronicles, theological tracts, biographies of saints (known as hagiography), and romances.

Falling Through Our EyesMid winter, cold, damned coldThe kind of cold that freezes thoughtand mine were readyBut she was warm and pretty, with good legs, her smile catching me by surpriseWarm hands, warm touch, warm finger splaying across my backHer head so quickly on my shoulderSometimes love just comes like thatAn unexpected meeting of the eyesBut does it ever last? The sudden rush of passionthat makes me think I’m cared about

Or is it bound to lessen, as we know much more and care much less? Her body’s warm and nestles against mine. Waking, tangled in the morning light, we tease each other, reach across the sheets She stretches, each line so finely drawnWe fall through one another’s eyesSix months since we met, first held each otherA love that seems to deepen every dayI know I’ll hold her years from now, with memories of each intimacy sharedThis love, this Golden City, Prague

Reflections of my worthcan’t be found in your eyes, nor yours in mineDrawn in lines and shadesof subtlety

There’s danger there,to find my value in your gazeCharges it with everything I am,hope to be, or ever wereIf you look away, I’m ravaged

My love, my worth, is known to meEndless study of the best and worst,a feel for the topographyLook elsewhere if you mustI’ll find myself, a mirrored image
