• Promotion of SRI: Ragi:

• Application of SRI principles in other crops:

Rationale for Organic SRI Small farm holders –Average 1 ha land holdings. Food insecurity & Need to increase productivity.By default ,farmers follow organic practices.Lack of investment capacity for chemical farming Low per capita income- 83.81 % below the poverty

line Irregular monsoons- Need to reduce water stress.

Package of Practices for Organic SRI

Pre Sowing Seed Treatment- Cow urine solution, Bija Amruta

Land Preparation Summer Ploughing , Bund cleaning,Green manuring, FYM

Crop management Medicinal compost, Vermi compost ,Jiba Ambamruta ,Neem oil/Cake/Leaf extract

Post harvest Timely harvest ,Selection of plants for seed, Proper Draying, Storage ,marketing

Organic practices for nutrient and pest management

Page 9: Pragati odisha

Achievement •150 Nos. Community Resource Persons trained on Preparation and application of Organic practices.•11,304 farmers adopted organic nutrient and pest management practices in SRI principles• 717 farmers adopted organic practices in vegetable cultivation in 596 acres with an average income of 16500/- per acre.•176 farmers clubs formed in 176 villages covering 10,443 farmers. 93 Farmers clubs establish linkage with NABARD. • 1657 farmers established vermi- compost units and mobilized 199 vermi units through linkage with NHM•District and Block level interface created space for liasioning with Dist. Administration,PRIs and line department officials.•Exposures created space for cross learning and sharing of organic practices among 508 farmers and implementing staff.

Page 10: Pragati odisha

Impact: Increased production per acre & food security for small farm

holders- 3-6 months. Popularisation and increased adoption of organic practices. Increased area of land put under SRI paddy( Average- 0.63 acre per

farmer). 37 Indigenous varieties propagated.Replication of SRI principles in Ragi(143 farmers in 119 acres in 21

villages) , Vegetables, Pulses and oil seeds. Increased income from sale of surplus as yield increases.

(Incremental Crop yield (q/ac) against traditional-Paddy: 5.33,Sugarcane: 3.2, Ragi: 2.7)

SRI incorporated in all projects as an intervention for increasing food availability.

Cadre of CRPs, progressive and women farmers propagate SRI principles.

Page 11: Pragati odisha

Objective:•Refinement of principles and procedures of SRI cultivation for wider adaptability.•Document the action research findings in a systematic manner for making SRI more inclusive in nature.•Disseminate the research results among various stakeholders and farmers in particular for up scaling of SRI

Aspects of Research1. No of plants per hill X Age of seedlings (AOS )2. Age of seedlings (AOS ) x Spacing3. Contribution of each aspect on crop yield

On Farm research on SRI

Issues & Challenges :

Convergence with Govt. scheme for scale up - a challenge in delivering commitment and the stance of the organization.

Promotion of massive Line sowing by Govt. with package of hybrid seeds and chemical fertilizers affected intensity of scale up of SRI.

Scale up of technology and increased outreach requires policy support, but little initiative from govt. for promotion of SRI.

Learning:

SRI principles proved effective in Ragi, Vegetables and pulses-resulted in increased yield and adopting package of practices.

Intensive intervention & action research in organic practices needed for scaling up.

Seed banks can be a key strategy for conservation and multiplication of indigenous varieties and retain the seed control at farmer level.

Suggestions/Recommendations: Integrating voices of farmers groups into state level advocacy and building a state

level lobby with evidence based documentation and research. The technology need to be extended to millets, vegetables ,pulses and cash crops. Market linkage through producer organizations to enable small farm holders move

from subsistence farming to income enhancement.
