BBC Radio 1 Scott Mills Show

We listened to a radio show of our choice for 1 hour and researched different parts of the radio. I chose to listen to a Scott Mills show on BBC Radio for 1 hour and wrote down my results that I found from the research.

I found the ratio of songs to speech was about 40 minutes to 20 minutes. The 20 minutes of speech included discussions, adverts and jingles. Considering the presenter had guests in with him, there was still a lot of music played, and sometimes the songs would be played continuously for5/6 minutes. In the hour long show, there were 5 jingles used. The jingles didn’t last any longer than 20 seconds, and were only used to name the radio show. The music was all recent songs, which the target audience want, and the talking was funny, which the audience would like. The songs were aimed to please the intended target audience. There were also conversations between the host and the guest, which provided entertainment for the audience.

Audience 1- My first playlist is targeted for younger children. All these songs will be familiar to the younger generation, and are songs they can have fun listening too. Most of these songs are newer songs, so will be played a lot when they’re growing up, however some of the tunes are classics, which most children love to dance to.

Audience 2 – The second playlist is targeted towards Indian culture. These songs are mostly Bollywood, so may be familiar to the Indians, rather than English. You won’t hear this on a mainstream radio, so this playlist is dedicated to them.

Context 1 – this music is chosen to be played in a hospital. This fits into the surroundings as all the songs are happy and bright, and energetic. I wouldn’t pick a song about thing such as death because it wouldn’t be suitable for patients of a hospital.

Context 2 – this playlist would be played in a shopping centre around the Christmas time, as all the songs are about Christmas. This playlist wouldn’t be able to played any other time of year, also playing it in a shopping centre will get people in the Christmas spirit, and lots of people will hear it.
