PR Writing
The Good, the BadBad, and the
Ugly
PR Writing• This course has
been…– Entertaining– Fun– Educational– A lot of work– Difficult at times– Sometimes
stressful
TOP 10 Things TOP 10 Things Learned in PR WritingLearned in PR Writing
Taught me to be Organized
• The first and most important thing this class has taught me is to be organized.– Webct assignments– Quizzes– Blogs– Writing assignments– Del.icio.us (very helpful)
How to Write Positively
• Throughout this course I have learned to write in a way that will represent my client in the most positive light possible.
Edit Myself
• This portion of the course was definitely my weak spot, I am not the best with grammar. AP style was the hardest thing for me to adjust to.
• To improve in this area I will refer to my stylebook before turning a written assignment in.
Blogs are Useful
• I’ve learned blogs are great for marketing and PR if used in the right way.
• You can meet helpful experienced people through blogging.
• You can learn a lot from reading other people’s blogs:– OpenMic.org– Listeningmatters.wor
dpress.com
The Value of Press Releases
• I have learned how important news releases can be. Also how to construct them in a way that will get them read and possibly used.
Promotional Item• I enjoyed creating a promotional item
through Branders.com. I found this to be one of the most useful things learned, because it not only benefited my client, but is also something to be used on a regular basis for business and recreational purposes.
Resume• Having done a resume in this class has
taught me how to tailor it in a way that will appeal to my strengths relating to the position applied for.
• I also learned to leave stuff out that isn’t necessarily relevant.
Media Contact List
• I learned the importance of a media contact list. In case something is to go wrong, it is vital to have this list nearby.
• Although it was tedious to make this contact list, it was necessary.
Constant Assignments
• This is something I struggled with in this class. Balancing the constant assignments due every Wednesday along with all of my other course loads as well as working.
• This is one of the main things that helped me to get organized and manage my time wisely.
Photos and Captions• When I did the photo with captions
assignment I learned that the more natural the photo, the better.– The photo should communicate a message– The photo should contain the rule of thirds– The unimportant aspects should be cropped out– The background should be pleasing, not
distracting– Contrast is key– Captions should tell a mini story.
Conclusion• Overall PR Writing has been a really good
learning experience.• Although this class was overwhelming at
times, it was extremely helpful and I am glad I stuck with it.
• This class has prepared me for future PR and journalism classes.
