Editors Letter

Welcome to the March issue of Princes Risborough View. Well just when we thought the mild weather was going to continue all winter, as I write this, the warnings are for -10 degrees at night! Hopefully as you read this, Spring has started to arrive or will there be snow now? The weather is certainly very erratic but we are not alone. Sydney, Australia has had one of the coldest summers in years.

We are finding it very difficult to choose front covers to fit in with the seasons and thought of a mad March hare for this issue. However, they proved extremely difficult to photograph and despite Debbie lying in wait in a field for hours, we were not in luck. Luckily for us, Photrain (see advert page 9) supplied us with this lovely picture of a muntjac deer, taken in the

countryside around Risborough. Why not give them a call and learn how you too could take pictures like this.

We have had a number of new advertisers contact us again this month and we are thrilled to say that the page count has increased again. We have also received very positive feedback so we do hope we are getting the balance of articles, community, puzzles and adverts right but if you do have any suggestions you would like to put forward, please get in touch.

We like hearing from you and are constantly thinking of ways to improve the magazine.

Hope all the Mums out there have a lovely Mother’s Day on March 18th. Why not treat your Mum to a gorgeous bouquet from The Flower Gallery (p17) or take her out to lunch at the Kings Hotel (p32) or The Dinton Hermit (p6).

Recipe of the Month

This is a super recipe as you can change the flavours by altering the type of chocolate you use eg, dark, milk, white, strawberry, lemon, orange, coffee and you can add almost any sprinkles to it that you fancy. You can play with flavours but we have made some suggestions below that work well together.

INGREDIENTS:250g white chocolate350g milk chocolate200g nuts, dried fruit, etc

YOU WILL NEED:Weighing Scales, 2 x microwave safe mixing bowls, teaspoon, skewer, cellobags

ALTERNATIVE FLAVOURINGS:Dark chocolate with chopped pieces of fresh red chilli and roasted pumpkin seedsMilk chocolate with stem ginger piecesCranberries, dried cherries, dried strawberriesRoasted pistashios and cashewsMilk chocolate and a little sea saltDark chocolate with ground cardamomPopping candy – stir into the melted chocolateYou could add fudge pieces, sprinkles, food safeglitter, edible gold leaf or anything else that you think tastes good with chocolate.

METHOD - WASH YOUR HANDS:1. Break up the chocolate and place each

flavour into a separate microwave safe bowl. Heat a bowl of chocolate in the microwave on MEDIUM for 1 minute, then a further minute, once it starts to melt reduce the time to 20 second bursts ALWAYS ON MEDIUM, when the chocolate has almost melted but you can still see the outline shape remove it from the microwave and stir until it is totally melted. Repeat with the second flavour of chocolate.

2. Line a baking tray with baking parchment and stir HALF the nuts and dried fruit into the melted milk chocolate. Pour the chocolate out onto the baking parchment in a single layer approximately 5mm thick.

3. Use a teaspoon to drip blobs of melted white chocolate over the milk chocolate and then use a skewer to gently swirl the white chocolate into the milk chocolate creating a marbled effect. Sprinkle over the remaining fruit and nuts. Allow to cool then put into the fridge for an hour.

4. When it’s fully set, break the bark into pieces and transfer to the bags to give as gifts.

Longwick pre-school aims to create a safe, secure and stimulating environment in which children can:

• Be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, through well planned learning opportunities.

• Learn to respect others and be respectedin return.

• Gain confidence to move onto the next steps of their educational development.

• Experience a wide range of activities which will enhance their developmental progress through all six areas of development.

At Longwick pre-school children are able to explore a wide range of activities that cover each area of learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children can explore our indoor and outdoor learning environments independently through free play or adult led activities. As well as our purpose built preschool garden, we take advantage of the large park area where we can all be found going on nature walks, making hedgehog nests by the skate park or singing songs in the shelter!

We strive to ensure that all activities whether indoor or outdoor are ‘meaningful’ and ‘exciting’ for all the children so that they want to learn and are encouraged to take the next steps in their development.

We have four members of staff who are all trained in Early Years Education and our recent Ofsted Inspection gave us an outcome of ‘Good’ with some aspects of ‘Outstanding’.

Our location offers free, easy and safe parking. We are currently open 9.00am – 3.00pm Monday and 9.00am – 12.00pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We can offer another full day when numbers allow.

Shushh! Don’t tell everyone…

Fran Jennings, the owner, welcomed me in to her totally self contained, two room salon with such warmth and enthusiasm that

I immediately felt right at home. Ideally situated at 2A Summerleys Road, just around from the station and with easy access and off road parking, this small but perfectly formed business is a delight.

Fran has had experience in the beauty industry for the past eighteen years but has taken some time out to spend with family. Realising that now is the time where she can manage that balance of home life and career, she has bravely ventured into business once again bringing all her experience and expertise with her.

The salon has a warm and inviting atmosphere but also one of

professionalism and peacefulness. It is clear that you could totally unwind here and be treated to the personal touch with absolutely no feeling of intimidation. There is a complete range of different beauty treatments to discover to tempt you and keep you returning for more.

For those who are regulars to beauty or for those who are wanting to try for the first time, The Beauty Room couldn’t be a better place to visit. The emphasis here is on exclusivity and making you feel special.

The Beauty Room could well be one of Risborough’s best kept secrets!

Book Review - The British Countryside

Our British countrysideis teeming with life this time of year. To save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a back-garden safari.British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA PublishingWho says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured.RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of BritainIf you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack.Bugs Britannica, Peter Marren and Richard MabeyDetermined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepy-crawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the

importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the fly-spray this summer. British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook, Camilla de la Bedovere. This is the ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the back-garden and beyond. Children will love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife.A Kestrel for a Knave, Barry HinesIf you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Not released until June 2012Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife

If you are opting for a ‘staycations’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’.

Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

Heel Pain

With Debby Luxton BSc (Hons) Registered Podiatrist

Heel pain can be caused by a number of different problems; for effective treatment you need to know the cause.

The heel is designed to absorb the shock of walking and running. When you’re walking, stresses placed on your feet can be 1¼ times your body weight. This can increase to 2 ¾ times when running. It is therefore not surprising that heel pain is so common.

The following are some of the more common types of heel pain:

Plantar Fasciitis is pain in the heel resulting from damage to the tissue band (fascia) connecting the heel bone to the base of the toes. It tends to be most painful after resting or first thing in the morning.

Calcaneal Bursitis is an inflammation under the heel bone. Typically the pain is more in the centre of the heel than with plantar fasciitis, and tends to get worse as the day progresses.

Chronic inflammation of the heel

pad can be caused by a heavy

heel strike when walking or a

reduction in the thickness of the

heel pad. This gives rise to a dull

ache which again increases as the

day wears on.

To ensure you receive the right

treatment it is important to see

someone who specialises in heel

pain. As part of their training,

Podiatrists specialise in heel pain,

its cause and treatment.

For heel pain, or any other aches and pains, please contact The Luxton Clinic where our registered practitioners will be able to help you. T: 01844 352200 or email [email protected]

Inspirational Characters

By Mike Payne

Princes Risborough has certainly been blessed over the years with some inspirational characters, and watching one of our leading town historians, Sandy Macfarlane, giving a magnifi cent talk on the history of Parkfi eld recently at our Heritage Society meeting, I realised just what an infl uence these characters have had, and are still having, on my life.

I came to live in Risborough in 1963 and from the moment I started taking an active interest in the recreation available in the town I have been inspired by many people I have had the pleasure to be involved with. The first of these was probably Harold Mitchell, who was banging on my door as soon as he knew I played football! “Come and play for Risborough Tenants,” he said, in that familiar Wolverhampton-cum-Bledlow accent of his. How could I refuse? My association with Tenants, and other teams, gave me the chance to

play football with some wonderful players, and some amazing talent. Chaps like the Carter boys from Monks Risborough, Geoff Mitchell, Colin-I will run forever-Steptoe, the Rutland boys, the Ridgeways, Micky Versey, Mark Fisher and a host of other inspirational players and unforgettable characters.

And the dedication to sport didn’t stop at football, as on the summer cricket fields I would come across the Carter boys again, Douglas Miller who was always Mr Monks Risborough Cricket Club, Chris Wilkins, such a sporting talent, and the one and only Nibbo Makepeace, who is still very actively involved with Risborough Rangers. The sporting names are endless, Mick Orchard, Dicker Redding, Colin Montague, Dave ‘Colossus’ Lewis and the other Lewis boys. And another inspiring never to be forgotten cricketer and character was Tony Maisey, wicket-keeper extraordinaire! There have been so many others too.

Since as far back as I can remember I have also been involved in the organising of sports teams and other group activities and some of those unsung people who came on to our committees have also been a huge inspiration to me over the years. They all deserve medals really. Recently I have been doing some

talks for local W.I. groups and other groups and I am now inspired by the work that the people that run these organisations do for the town, and have done for many, many years. What they do is not always fully appreciated, but it is by me, that is for sure.

And talking of unsung heroes, give a thought or two to the ladies involved in the organisation of all these activities. I’m thinking of people like Mrs Jessie Carter, who was an inspiration to many a young footballer and cricketer in the town with her endless dedication. And I have been very lucky to have had a wife who was prepared to wash football kit, make cricket teas, mow football pitches, sweep out dressing rooms, help score at quiz nights, cook, clean and generally be there to support me and help the clubs I’ve been involved with, survive. There are not many like her but I take my hat off to all of them.

And I finish by going back to where I started. My fascination with the heritage of the town has grown so much over recent years, and it is mainly down to Sandy Macfarlane, as his dedication to preserving the history and development of Princes Risborough is breathtaking. When you spend some time in his company and listen to the knowledge he has acquired, and the enthusiastic way he puts it across, it is impossible not to be inspired.

Like I said, Risborough has been blessed.

Email Mike at [email protected] or ring 01844 347511 if you have any information or photos you would like to share, or if you would like to fi nd out more about the Heritage Society.

Travel - Madeira

Madeira means ‘wood’, a name given to the island by the fi rst Portuguese settlers in the 15th century, though they promptly burnt as much of the forest as they could to create arable land.

Today the trees are back, 900,000 of them planted in the past decades, and as you approach this rugged but fertile island, dizzying slopes greet you with lush terraces where mango and banana groves compete with vineyards, passion fruit and papaya trees.

Pretty as a postcard, Funchal, the capital, is a neat maze of tree-lined avenues with mosaic pavements, shaded squares and outdoor restaurants sweeping around a

glistening bay. On these south-facing slopes, life is relaxed and there’s time to wander around the farmers’ market, the steep

lanes draped in wisteria, the marina, or look out for the Beatles Boat turned into a restaurant, the statue of Zarco, the explorer who first set foot on the island, or that of Christopher Columbus who married a local girl. Some 2000 feet above the sea, the leafy suburb of Monte offers superb views, fragrant gardens and an iconic church where on August 15th, penitents go up the steps on their knees. Visitors prefer the cable-car but the fun way down is the toboggan, Madeiran-style, careering down the slope in a giant wicker basket, swung right and left by two handsome guys in white gear and straw hats.

Just 36 miles by 14 miles in the Atlantic, closer to Africa than to Portugal, the motherland, this little gem of an island is surprisingly varied. All along the coast, rocks

and cliffs tower dramatically above small pebble beaches pounded by the ocean. Experienced surfers head north to ride the waves but Funchal has gentle options, from coastal and dolphin-watching trips to a romantic twilight cruise on Santa Maria de Colombo, a stylish replica

of Christopher Columbus’ boat. Others sail around the Desert Isles, home to wild goats, seals and thousands of sea birds while the

ferry sets off for the more distant sister island of Porto Santo and its five miles of golden sands.

Back on the main island, small towns and villages are scattered along the shore, Camara de Lobos with its fishermen’s chapel and wooden boats, Calheta and its sugar plant making ‘firewater’, Porto Moniz with its bathing pools hollowed out of an old lava flow or Machico where Zarco is said to have landed. Not so far away, Torch Mountain recalls the great bonfires of the past, warning of approaching pirates, while the world’s second highest sea cliff, Cabo Girao, rises to a staggering 1900 feet and the windswept eastern peninsula stretches into the ocean, shared by the occasional lizard and a handful of seasoned walkers.

Walking on Madeira is exhilarating and pleasant year round. Popular footpaths follow the levadas, the ancient irrigation channels still used to bring water from the humid but sparsely inhabited north to the rich farmlands of the south, with a network of over 800 miles. There are leisurely trails through the ancient laurel forest of the National Park covering two thirds of the island, past gurgling streams and waterfalls, picnic spots and panoramic ‘balconies’ suspended between heaven and earth.

But most challenging of all is the mountainous interior and the fabulous but head-spinning hike from Pico de Areiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak towering above a dramatic moonscape at over 6000 feet.

Potatoes are such a great crop for the beginner to grow for a number of reasons.First of all they are an easy crop - they don’t have to take up too much space, indeed potatoes can easily be grown in containers. And they are ideal as a first crop in a new vegetable patch as they will break up the ground and ‘clean’ your soil, therefore not only producing a great harvest but also improving your soil for next year’s vegetables.

Potatoes give their best when planted in a rich fertile soil, so before planting dig your plot over and add as much farmyard manure and compost as possible.

Before planting it is advisable, though not completely necessary to ‘chit’ your seed.

Chitting encourages the seed potatoes to form fresh green

sprouts, and this is easily done by leaving your seed in egg boxes in a frost free cool environment. Within a couple of weeks you’ll notice your once smooth seed potaotes are now full of new strong sprouts, and ready to plant out.

Once the threat of heavy frosts have passed, to test that your plot is warm enough to plant, simply push your hand down into the soil. If you can keep your hand in there for a minute or so , then you can plant. If it’s too cold - try again in a week or so!

There are three types of potato to grow :

Earlies: These are the traditional New Potato - small with a thin skin, the first ready to harvest. They mature quickly and can be pulled after just 70-80 days in the ground. The best varieties are Arran Pilot, Home Guard, Swift & Pentland Javelin.

Second Earlies: Ready in mid/late July, they are a bigger potato and store well. Try Wilja, Kestrel, Estima & Charlotte.

Main Crop: These potatoes stay in the ground until October or later. They are a big potato with a thick skin, ideal for baking. Very good for storing, they will keep you going until the next Spring. Go for King Edward, Cara, Desiree or Maris Piper.

If you need more advice of growing your potatoes - do pop in and speak to one of us. We all grow our own, and will be more than happy to advise you on the best choice for your plot.

By the way, it’s also time toplat your Onion Sets, Garlicand Shallots.

See you soon, Happy Gardening.

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.

It’s Seed Potato time…

And if you’ve never grown your own Spuds before - do have a go this year.

It seems quite strange writing this piece as I sit on a balcony on Sanibel Island Florida overlooking the Gulf of Mexico The condominium we are staying in has its own community and everyone knows each other and are very supportive to one another. We were welcomed because our friend who owns the condominium let them know her friends from England were coming to stay. How nice to be welcomed by strangers. They all ask where we live and some have visited our region and all say how pleasant it is.

This made me reflect how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area and how fortunate we are to live in community that has so much to offer. This is only because so many people are prepared to support our community in a variety of ways. As I think of the members of the congregation of St Mary’s, I know that besides the work they do within the Church, they are also actively engaged in a host of activities around the town. Be it acting as school governors, running the youth club, helping to save the Day Centre, supporting the homeless at Saunderton Lodge, visiting the residents at the old age centres, supporting Lighthouse with Children’s activities and the list goes on.

Now we are fortunate that in Risborough we have 8 churches working together through Churches Together in Risborough (CTR). If I may quote from their website: “The Christian community in and around Risborough is rich, diverse and vibrant. We have a strong presence throughout the community with our many different denominations. We believe in working together for the glory of God and for the benefit of local people.”

How true and how lucky we are to live here. But I sometimes wish the weather was a bit more like that in Florida!
