Should electric cigarettes be allowed in the workplace

One of the biggest companies in Britain, Standard Life, bans electric cigarettes from being smoked in the office saying it goes against their strict no smoking policies.

Top financial firm Standard Life who employ 9,000 people in Edinburgh believes that vaping is still smoking even though e cigarettes don't contain any tobacco.

E cigarettes are as dangerous as a cup of coffee

E-cigs possess similar risks as drinking a mug of coffee mainly because they contain nicotine which is actually a stimulant. Electric cigarettes function by an atomizer heating up the liquid inside generally known as e juice which in turn vaporises. E juice does not have any tobacco as such though nicotine which is an alkaloid found in nightshade plants, does have traces of tobacco. Electric cigarettes certainly are a much more healthy replacement for cigarette smoking they do not contain the cancer causing carcinogens that cigarettes contain. They do contain nicotine though that is addictive nevertheless this will assist smokers make the switch.

For twenty years, Standard Life has been a non-smoking organisation and they even has an occupational health division that helps employees stop smoking cigarettes. They feel that permitting workers to smoke electric cigarettes may undermine their non-smoking policy and as a consequence have prohibited ecigs at the office.

Electric cigarettes have become popular with many celebrities including Kate Moss and Britney Spears. Will Standard Life set a precedent?

As yet, Standard Life is the only large corporation in Britain to publicly announce they have prohibited electric cigarettes in their workplace. The vast majority of organisations allow electric cigarettes to be used at the office including Scottish Widow's and Lloyd's.

The chairman of the Royal College of Physicians Tobacco Advisory Group, Professor John Britton believes e cigs have the potential to save millions of lives around the world and also encourages their introduction. Also the government “nudge unit” encourages e-cigs because they feel that e cigs may potentially save thousands of lives as they are a much healthier alternative.



Change to the healthier alternative

Potentially e cigs could save millions of lives if tobacco smokers changed. This is the concept of the ‘nudge unit’ set up by the Conservative party and the banning of them at financial firm, Standard Life, could potentially damage this because it could set a precedent.

Sadly most don't realize the main advantages of electric cigarettes and the reasons why they are a far healthier replacement for normal cigarettes and do not give off any dangerous chemicals and second hand smoke.

Switch to electric cigarettes, a far healthier alternative to cigarettes.
