And we finally we came up with an innovative idea of transforming polyethene into ethanol which is a greener fuel.

Polythene is made up of ethene monomer, we can convert the polymer of ethene into monomer of ethene by the thermal cracking procedure and then we can convert ethene gas into ethanol with the hydration process .The novelty of the invention lies in the combination of two reactions for the production of clean fuel which has ethanol as its major component. The byproducts which are lower alkanes are also potential fuels.

First step:- Polythene waste after being cleansed in weak mineral acid and will go through thermal cracking  in an inert environment at about 350oC-750oC and pressure of 90 psi. During this process it will break into different smaller hydrocarbons. Since the cracking follows a free radical mechanism therefore it is almost impossible to completely negate the formation of by products that are hydrocarbons other than ethene.

Second step:- The formed ethene gas will be hydrated in the presence of an acid catalyst like phosphoric acid.  The formed gases will be passed through a multilayered mesh coated with solid phosphoric acid catalyst inside an environment of water vapor where ethene will be reacting with water to form ethanol at 300oC and pressure of 1024 psi.

Step by step procedure(home experiment i.e. without giving required temperature, pressure and catalyst) :-1.Washing, cleansing in any mineral acid and shredding of waste polyethene (collected from our society) was done 2.Then we started heating that cleaned and shredded polyethene(50 grams) into an aluminum container at 120degree Celsius for 30-40 minutes3.After heating that container in which thermal cracking procedure was taking place we started heating the 2nd container in which 50 ml of water was there for 10-15 minutes at 100-110 Degree Celsius for 15 minutes .4.When the water started to boil we stopped boiling water.5.All the gases from thermal cracking container and steam from the 2nd container was coming to the last container and there hydration of ethene process was taking place .
