    Frederick Winslow Taylor (March 20, 1856March 21,

1915), widely known as F. W. Taylor, was anAmerican mechanical engineer who sought to improveindustrial efficiency. He is regarded as the father ofscientific management and was one of the firstmanagement consultants.

In this scheme, upto a certain productionlevel, which may be standard output, apiece rate (say R 1) is given. For anybody,

who achieves more than this output, willget the payment for over achievement at ahigher rate.

However, it does not guarantee minimumbase wage. Standard output may bedecided by careful time and unction studyprocedure.

    Advantages of Differential Piece Rate

    System :

    (1) Provides incentives to efficient worker

    (2) Penalizes inefficient worker

    (3) Focuses on high production rate

    (4) Simple and easy to implement

    Disadvantages of Differential Piece Rate

    System :

    (1) Minimum wage is not assured.

    (2) No consideration for the machine failure, power failure, etc.

    (3) Over emphasis on high production rate

    (4) There are chances that quality of work maysuffer.

    Standardization -

According to Taylor maximum objectives of thebusiness can be achieved only when the rawmaterial, labor, machine , equipment, method

and techniques are standardized andpredetermined, so that nothing could be left the trailand error. Following are the important form ofstandardization:

    Standardization introduced in respect

    of the following :

Tools and equipment: By standardization is

meant the process of bringing about uniformity.

The management must select and store standard

tools and implements which will be nearly the bestor the best of their kind.

Speed:There is usually an optimum speed for

every machine. If it is exceeded, it is likely to result

    in damage to machinery.

Conditions of Work:To attain standardperformance, the maintenance of standard

    conditions of ventilation, heating, cooling,

humidity, floor space, safety etc., is very essential.

Materials:The efficiency of a worker depends on

the quality of materials and the method ofhandling materials.

    Standardization of product :

To make standardization of product state the productof produced articles, their design, size, type, weightand quality of the product must have uniformity. Thus, standardization of product must be based upon theneeds and tastes of customers.

Standardization of raw material :Maintenance of standardization of product is possible, ifthe raw material used in the different operations are

standardized. Thus, use of standard raw materials inproduction of product reduces the wastages, improvesquality of production and it simplifies productiveoperations.

    Standardization of methods :

Methods and techniques of production should also bepredetermined after careful study and testing, otherwiseconsiderable amount of time and energy may be lost inthe selection of methods of production. So, determinedthe most suitable method for every operation of

    production.

Standard working conditions :An efficient manager should make the requisite

arrangements for working atmosphere conditions suchas, space, lighting, temperature, ventilation andrefreshing atmosphere of work roves theimprovement inproduction efficiency and quality of product and theworkers.

    Mental Revolution :

This involves the change of attitude on bothsides. Under this system Taylor suggested thatthere should be mental revolution from bothmanagement and Workers side in their attitudeand outlook towards work else the scientificmanagement is not effective .
