Food from the Farm

Most of us get our food from the grocery store. Where else could we buy food?

Where does this food come from in the first place?

Almost all of our food comes from farms.

Fruits, vegetables, and meat all come from farms. Much of what we eat is produced in the United States.

Wait! These aren’t vegetables. Where did this food come from? Was it grown on a farm?

Fruits and vegetables are called produce. Different kinds of produce grow in different parts of the world.

Some crops need to grow in very hot places, such as Central America. Bananas and mangos grow there.

Some crops need to grow in places with milder temperatures, like the Midwest. Corn and wheat grow there.

Here in NC, we have mild winters and hot summers. Our weather is subject to occasional hurricanes. Do you know of any produce that is grown here?

Produce that grows in North Carolina has to tolerate heat and variable amounts of water. Sometimes, it is very dry here. Other times, we experience frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Occasionally, we experience floods from hurricanes. Let’s take a virtual field trip to learn more about different types of food that are produced on farms.
