tive to the Pistolet-Pulemyot Degtyary-ova (PPD-40 ) ThePPD-40 was a closecopy of the GermanBergman MP-18.

police departments. If none of these sources can help you contact the National Rifle Association.

The person with a gun in his possession has a full-time job. He cannot guess; he cannot forget. He mustknow how to use his firearm safely. Do not use any firearm without having a complete understanding of

its particular characteristics and safe use. Remember: There is NO such thing as a foolproof gun.

Basic Safety List

A loaded firearm has the potential to kill. Intelligently handled it is safe.An accident is always the result of basic safety rules neglect.Accident prevention is user responsibility.Never point a firearm at anything you dont want to shoot. Before handling a firearm be sure to use correct and undamaged ammunition.Be sure your firearm is cleanbefore loading inspect the barrel to insure it is perfectly clean and

free of debris and any obstructions. Shooting with an obstruction in the barrel such as dirt, mud,

grease, lodged bullet or jacket residues, etc, can cause barrel bulging and/or rupture.

Never assume that the chamber is empty, visually inspect it every time you handle the gun.Avoid alcoholic beverages or drugs before and during shooting.Always wear ANSI approved Safety Glasses or Goggles.Store firearms and ammunition separately, beyond the reach of children.Be sure cartridge chamber is empty.Thoroughly clean the firearm to prevent corrosion.

Step 1Point the firearm in a safe direction and

place the safety selector on safe by

pushing the lever completely FORWARD(towards the barrel) until it clicks.

Remove any magazine from the firearm by pushing forward (towards the barrel) on

the magazine release lever and pulling down on your magazine.

Pull the bolt to the rear and lock into place by sliding the locking lever into the upper

bolt cover slot. Visually inspect the chamber area for ammunition. If ammunition is

present, take the firearm to a safe location and remove the ammunition from the

firearm before proceeding.

Step 3 Once the firearm is safely unloaded and all ammunition has been removed fromthe workspace the next step in the process is to open the upper chamber cover.

To do this place one hand on the pistol grip portion of the stock and the other

supporting the barrel shroud. With your thumb push the upper chamber latch

forward until the barrel and chamber cover swing away from the stock.3A

With the chamber cover open securely grasp the bolt assembly by the bolt catch

and thumb over the top of the bolt - slide it rearward (towards the stock).

Lift it up and out of the chamber area.

Using a bench or table helps you steady the firearm and ease the disassembly process.

Make sure the phenolic block is

all the way back in the gun during

reassembly. IF YOU FAIL TO

FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE, DAMAGE TO

YOUR FIREARM OR YOUR PERSON CAN

OCCUR when the bolt travels to the rear after

firing a round and it hits the block. If you do not

follow this procedure it bends the rivet in the

latch and damages your firearm resulting in an

inoperable and unsafe condition.

Remove the firing pin by depressing the firing pin with an object

that will fit in the firing pin strike plate hole Use something

as simple as a standard round toothpick. Once the firing pin is

depressed lift up and out on the strike plate. Set the firing pinand strike plate aside for reinstallation later.

Remove the bolt catch lug by depressing the detent bearing on

the underside of the catch while simultaneously pushing

upwards on the catch to slide it away from the bolt group.

Step 7While securely grasping the stock rest the barrel on a sturdy and non-marring object for

supportgrasp the trigger group and gently pull out and away from the housing.

Temperature and humidity effect wooden stocks at various levels. Your trigger group may

slide right out or need a bit more effort before proceeding.

TIPS

Remember! If youare having to force a

piece or part back

together its time to

step back and take a

breather. Then

tackle the project

again.

Some of the modernsuper bore cleaners

and blasters will ruin

a finish and also do a

number on your jew-

elry or eye-glasses.

Step 8 Continued-

In order to disassemble the case extractor you may need to insert a

small piece of metal (I use a common push pin or thumb tack) in

the space between the spring and case extractor.

Slide it in the hole just below the flat extractor spring (see arrow in

it eases the transition of the extractor spring above the top

lip. Otherwise a significant amount of effort is needed to push the

spring forward using the little hole in the end.

EXTRACTOR SPRING. IF YOU DO NOT TAKE

YOUR TIME AND USE PROPER HAND AND

BODY PROTECTION YOU MAY INJURE YOUR-

SELF BY APPLYING TOO MUCH PRESSURE RE-

SULTING IN THE TOOL STRIKING OR CUTTING

YOU DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU ARE USING.

THE PHOTOS IN THIS ILLUSTRATION WERE

TAKEN OF A VERY WELL WORN PART AND

VERY LITTLE EFFORT WAS NEEDED TO REMOVE

IT FROM THE BOLT GROUP.

Important Hint!!

Mark your extractor springs

exposed side before disassembly-

that way you can reassemble it

properly when the time comes. If

you forget there is a small photo

below to help you out!

The arch of the spring is up, both ends should be

lower than the center for proper installation.

Using a non-marring punch or similar object tap out the barrel/

shroud retention pin from the side of the pin that has the slot cut

into it. Using a piece of scrap wood or other material with the same

hardness as a support- lift the hinge section off of the work space

enough to create an area for the pin to be forced out.

Remove the barrel from the shroud housing by pulling the

two parts away from each other.

Reassemble the barrel and shroud by following these

instructions in reverse order. Note that the recessed

cutout on the bottom of the barrel must be in the down

position (see photo below) in order for the barrel/

shroud retention pins to smoothly slide into the hinge.

Loading the drum magazine is not difficult. With a few hintsand tips you should be able to enjoy a day at the range

without the frustration of picking up spilled ammunition.

Inspect Spring Tension Follower to insure proper installation. (See Photo)

Wind the spring counter-clockwise until it reaches the end. Use

caution ! The spring is strong and if it disengages while your body

parts are in the mechanism you may suffer injury. You should no-

tice eight audible clicks as it passes certain stages.

Once youve got the ammunition situated, replace the cover

being careful not to allow any ammunition to fall over in the drum.

Break out your best Tokarov 7.62x25 Ammunition.

One of the best ways to load the drum is to tilt the bottom portion

towards you and load two rows at a time before slowly rotating the drum

to add the additional ammunition.

After replacing the front cover hold it securely and depress the magazine latch knob on the back

of the magazine and HOLD IT! You should hear the spring engage and feel a slight movement in

the drum. Keeping the cover held down and the button fully engaged on the back of the drum,

slide the lock upwards and secure the magazine latch knob.

Reassemble the PPSH-41SA inreverse order of Disassembly

Georgii Semenovich Shpagin was born in1897 in the village Klyuchnikovo, in the

Kovrov district of the province Vladimir, to

a peasant family. Around 1916 he was

called into service for the Russian Army

ultimately finding his niche as an armorer in

an infantry regiment.

During the Soviet/Finnish War of 1939/40

the Finns had considerable battlefield ad-

vantage over Shpagins Comrades due to

their employment of an established machine

gun.

You can imagine the number of superior

officers sweat stained armpits when the

Soviet High Command gave immediate

order to find a weapon to counter and ulti-

mately turn the tide for the Mother Land.

In the early months of 1940 he delivered a

prototype that was easily manufactured, not

labor intensive, and based on a readily

available military cartridgethe Tokarov

7.62x25.

After extensive and often impressive testing

the Shpagin stomped the Borscht (Russian

Beet Soup) right out of the competition. So

in July of 1941 production began in the face

of the rapidly advancing German Army.

The designers at TNW are proud to present

the PPSh-41SA. Theyve manufactured a

PPSh-41 SemiAutomatic that Im sure

Georgii Shpagin would be proud to leave

his name attached to.
