MARKS OF DISCIPLESHIP

In baptism, we are marked with the cross of Christ forever. This mark

of the cross of Christ is a promise of our salvation and eternal life.

It tells us to whom we belong and to whom we are called to fol-

low. Our lives as followers of Christ are also to be marked, marked

by spiritual disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are the way we grow in

our discipleship. A disciple is someone who learns from a teacher.

As Christians, we are disciples of Jesus Christ, learning what it

means to follow him, learning what it means to be like him.

Our Wednesday night Lenten service theme this year will be The

Marks of Discipleship. We will be learning how to grow in our disci-

pleship through the spiritual disciplines of prayer, worship, Bible

reading, serving, nurturing and giving. Following the worship ser-

vice, pastors will lead a reflection and discussion time on the spiri-

tual disciple discussed that evening. In our journey as disciples of

Jesus Christ there are up and downs, however there is also a

grounding, a strength that sustains us in Christ through our prac-

tices of faith.

As Phillip invited Nathanael to “Come and See” Jesus, we too are invited to come and see how Jesus is calling us to

grow deeper in practicing the marks of disciples so that our skepticism turns to joy, our apathy to spiritual energy

and our spiritual hunger can be filled so that we can reach out to the lost and hurting.

Blessings,

LEARN THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE OF CENTERING PRAYER.

During Lent Pastor Jennifer and Erik Larson will be leading a

study and practice of centering prayer.

What is centering prayer? It is a type of Christian mediation

that emphasis interior silence as a way to receive healing

and communion with Christ.

When: We will meet on Saturdays during Lent (February 17th

throughMarch 24th) from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Where: We’ll start meeting in the PoP Congregation Life

Room or Library depending on group size and interest.

Please watch for a sign up sheet and study materials.

New! Hospitality Team

This team’s intent is to provide a spiritual center of food

and fellowship where all are welcome. Whether on Sun-

day morning or at other gatherings, members of this

team generally work to make everyone feel comfortable

and “at home”. Some tasks would include setting up,

serving food or cleaning up for the gatherings. If you are

interested in contributing to the life of the church in this

way, or have questions about the Hospitality team,

please contact Kris Gurholt or Cindy Romnek.

bring? Just bring yourself. Friends and neighbors are

invited too! Feel free to bring some of your favorite

games. We will be meeting in the narthex area at

church. For more information, please contact Ashley

MISSION POSSIBLE Our POP Mission Jamaica 2018 team of 15 (see photo below left) would like to thank you, Prince of Peace, for your

generosity during our ‘Alternative Gifting’ program. Your contributions totaled over $2000, which went to finance the

bathroom we added to the Ja’Bode home we helped build, a large supply container for the 100 children of Westhaven

which will supply soaps, shampoos, bleach, etc. for 3 months, and 120 chickens for food for the children. In addition

we took donations of $800 from our Mission Jamaica budget for the Clifton Boys Home to help fund a scholarship of a

young man going on for additional education after high school, as well as help for miscellaneous costs for the boys of

Clifton, who are still housed in a church. We also took 4 large suitcases of clothing, diapers, disposable gloves, school

supplies, etc., and soaps and tooth brushes for the staff at Westhaven. Thank you, thank you! Your generosity has

been put to immediate use in Jamaica, which is a country with lots of needs. ~ Nancy Wittrock, MJ Chairperson

REACHING OUT WITH HER GIFTS & TALENTS ~ Music Mission Press release January 2018

The Music Mission is pleased to announce Colleen Perrine as their new Public Relations Director! The Music Mission

is a non-profit organization devoted to giving the gift of music to kids. The Music Mission is in its fourth successful year.

The Music Mission provides free musical instruments to kids who ordinarily would not have access to them. Volunteer

teachers also give free music lessons.

Perrine, who is a retired music teacher with the Appleton Schools, felt the call to serve as a Music Mission volunteer

teacher for the past two years. She has held a variety of positions in the music business which highly qualify her for her

new position. Before marriage and family Perrine was lead singer/keyboard player in two bands and was a solo act lo-

cally. She also worked in the music retail business at Henri’s for several years, as well as teaching in the studios there.

She presently works part-time as a worship leader/resident composer at Prince of Peace Church*.

As Public relations Director Perrine hopes to boost community awareness for the Music Mission. She also plans to

strengthen connections between the Mission and local schools.

Says Perrine: “I’ve known Leah and Lori Witthuhn for several years through a mutual musician friend. Leah had a

dream to start the Music Mission while she was in high school. I am in awe of her drive in bringing her dream to frui-

tion. I am continuously inspired by her spirit of compassion for kids! I only hope that I can contribute a fraction of what

she has given to this cause.”

* and will continue her role here - this doesn’t affect her position at PoP.

FROLIC FAITH CLASS On Sunday January 21st, we had

our first Frolic Faith class of the

year. The theme for that lesson

was Big and Little. So we shared,

read a book and sang about some

of the big and little things that God

made and how God’s love for us is

BIG! The highlight for the little

ones, hands down, was playing with musical shakers—so

much joyful noise filled the room!

These Frolic Faith classes are designed for children ages

birth to 3 yrs. old to participate with their parents/

guardians. Each lesson has a theme (i.e. new friends,

patience, sharing...) and consists of circle time, story

time, songs and play time.

Classes are offered once a month. Snacks are provided

and older siblings are always welcome! Our next Frolic

Faith class will be Sunday, February 25th from 10:30-

11:10 am in the nursery.

We invite you to join us for this special time to grow in

faith with your child and connect with families at Prince

of Peace. You do not need to register for these classes,

however if you have any questions, please contact Anna

Reinhold ([email protected]).

CROSSWAYS CAMP

FOR

POP CONFIRMATION!

Information was sent home with 6th-8th grade students.

We have reserved June 10-15th for our youth. If your

son or daughter is interested in attending, or you would

like more information, please contact Brigetta

[email protected]).

As we get back into the routine after the wonderful

Christmas season, we are looking forward to the second

half of the 2017-2018 Faith Formation year.

Here is a quick glance at the Faith Formation calendar

for the rest of the year:

February 11—Faith Formation large group activity in

the Fellowship Hall

February 18—Winter Break (No Faith Formation)

February 25 & March 4—First Communion classes

(4th graders)

March 11—Seder Meal (4th graders)

March 18—First Communion—4th Grade no Faith For-

mation classes

March 25—Faith Formation large group activity in the

Fellowship Hall

April 1—Easter (No Faith Formation)

May 20—Last Day of Faith Formation—large group

activity in the Fellowship Hall

June 23—PoP Camp at Calumet (as part of the PoP

Summer Fellowship Series…stay tuned for more de-

tails!)

Music time- We are excited to continue music time at the

beginning of FF class each week. This winter and spring

we will be introducing new music, rhythm instruments

and the opportunity for the children to share their talents

during a service later this spring.

Serving others - During music time, the children were

introduced to a new song entitled “Gonna Serve” and we

brainstormed as a group what the word ‘serve’ means

and ways that we can serve others. This spring, we will

be engaging the children in simple but meaningful ser-

vice opportunities. Our first project will be February 11th,

where the Faith Formation students will make

Valentine’s Day cards for our home bound members and

senior citizens in assisted living within our community.

Offering - Through May, the children’s Faith Formation

offerings will continue to go towards supporting George,

Rahab and Makena Mbatia.

We again want to thank all of the leaders who make our

Faith Formation program possible! If you would like to get

involved with Faith Formation at Prince of Peace, please

connect with your FF coordinators, Brigetta Wingender

and Anna Reinhold.

To our AWESOME Bell Ringers !!!!

The Salvation Army first used a kettle to collect

funds for Christmas 127 years ago. Today, the red

kettle is a familiar part of the Christmas scene in

communities across the United States. Since 1917,

The Salvation Army has been committed to serving

the disadvantaged of our Fox Cities community.

Much has changed since then, but our determina-

tion to reach out our hands and open our hearts to

all in need has not.

Over 1,883 volunteers contributed 8,686 hours

to bell ringing in the Fox Cities! With the help of vol-

unteers like you we have raised over a million dol-

lars. We are very blessed to have such a dedicated

volunteer as yourself, partnering with us this sea-

son, taking time from your schedule to ring bells.

With your support we are able to make our pro-

grams a success another year.

I am pleased to share with you some successes

of 2017:

•There were 10 Red Kettle Match Days and the

community came through to help us reach all 10

match challenges. This added over $430,000 to

the kettle goal.

• There were 6,676 individuals in the Fox Cities

that received Christmas assistance by Salvation

Army programs

• 2,553 children received over 22,732 toys,

games, books, stuffed animals and stocking stuff-

ers to make for a bright Christmas!

On behalf of all those we serve, thank you so

much for your support of our 2017 Red Kettle Cam-

paign. We look forward to continuing to work with

you in 2018!

Sincerely,

Karen VanderWielen, Volunteer Coordinator

what the new members classes are about. Are you, or someone you know, considering joining

Prince of Peace? Mark your calendars for the upcoming new member classes. Our first gathering is

scheduled for Sunday, February 18th. Classes will run through March 18th on Sunday mornings,

WITNESS / HELPING HANDS

Flu Alert from our Helping Hands Health team –

Dear PoP family,

Influenza has arrived in Wisconsin and across the country; it is widespread in all states and especially dangerous for the

elderly, young, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions such as heart disease. In Wisconsin alone there

are 100 influenza related hospitalizations each day and nationally 20 pediatric deaths have been reported.

In order to help prevent the spread of this and any infection remember to wash hands frequently with soap and water,

cover your cough or sneeze (with the inside of your elbow not your hand) and PLEASE stay home if you are feeling sick - it is

better to miss church, school or an event than to possibly pass on a virus to those at higher risk of serious complications!

Symptoms of influenza include: dry cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, body aches such as joints and muscles, stuffy or

runny nose. If or when you are feeling sick, remember to drink plenty of fluids, and rest!

If you are concerned about your symptoms, or need assistance, contact your physician or please feel free to contact Jenni

Doris, RN, BSN & PoP Health Ministry Leader. Praying for health and wellness for all of our church family,

Yours in Christ, Jenni

Mark your calendars for Helping Hands Sunday – February 11! Love Grows One by One!

Spreading the Love through Prince of Peace Helping Hands Outreach

God’s amazing grace through Christ Jesus calls us to respond with love for others as individuals and as a community of

faith. The Helping Hands Outreach purpose is to build connections among PoP members by providing assistance for

aging challenges and to those who are experiencing a time of special need. Helping Hands provides many opportuni-

ties through our outreach with our wonderful Prince of Peace volunteers of all ages.

In the year 2017, Helping Hands….

Delivered meals in times of special need.

Helped members with small repairs and odd jobs around the house.

Distributed prayer shawls and prayer bears to PoP and community members.

Provided gas and grocery gift cards for individuals in need.

Provided meals or snack bags for community individuals or families in need.

Delivered over 300 worship bags to homebound members.

Sewed mittens and hats for the ‘Gifts of Hope’ outreach and for the community.

Made “Quilts of Valor” for our PoP Veterans.

And, provided educational sessions on Mental Illness and Dementia/Alzeimer’s.

We are so grateful to our volunteers who have offered their hands and their hearts in this important ministry. If you

would like to become involved or know of someone who could benefit from one or more of our areas of outreach,

please contact our Helping Hands leader, Erin Larson (chair). If you would like to donate to make these ministries more

accessible, you may make a donation to the “Helping Hands Designated Giving fund”.

Greetings, friends in Christ.

A grant was approved at the Appleton Conference of Churches meet-

ing earlier this year to support a Memory Care Respite Program for

our community. This is a collaborative project that has engaged the

resources of 6 different community partners in designing this

(currently) one of a kind program for the Fox Valley. This program is

unique in that it offers respite care for the caregiver while the loved

one stays with a professional CNA staff (trained in care with demen-

tia patients) and trained volunteers. The loved one enjoys an array

of activities and engagement while the loved one runs errands, uses

the YMCA across the street from the program (this is free even if you

are not a Y member), or simply enjoys some quiet time.

Our first program was held in May and we have been learning a

great deal with each subsequent event.

We are pleased to be providing this at no charge to those using the

service and this was made possible by the generous grant given by

the Appleton Conference of Churches of the ECSW ELCA.

We want to make sure your congregational members know about

this wonderful opportunity and are counting on you to connect those

in your congregation that may benefit from this type of service.

Thank you for your partnership and prayers for this program. We

hope it will continue to meet a significant need in our community.

God's work. Our hands. Amen!--

Grace and peace,
